[edit] Chinese
The wikilink for Chinese on this page is better left alone and not to be redirected to China, as the meaning of the term "Chinese" on this Chinese Wikipedian Listing Page is highly inclusive: "Including all Chinese, whether you are in mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan or overseas". Here "Chinese" does not mean just "the citizens of China", as would be implied by the redirection to page "China". Many, if not nearly all, non-first-generation overseas Chinese are not citizen of China from birth until death. Moreover, while some Taiwanese consider themselves Chinese, others don't. To know more about the controversial case Taiwan, read the article "Political status of Taiwan". -- User:Menchi, 17 Feb 2003
[edit] Converting CJK text to HTML Unicode
Actually, most people simply type up the Chinese characters in the edit-box, and press "Save page". Then the next page will reveal its Unicode (like 数). But if that doesn't work for you, you can try the following methods:
[edit] IE mojibake
Based on kt2's description
If you are using IE 5 or higher, check out this example.
- Type or paste in the text, regardless of length.
- Hit Show Preview and you should see a bunch of broken characters (as youe see in the following text). Don't delete them:
- ÖÐɽÏÈÉúÔçÄêÐÐát£¬ÒòÄ¿¶ÃMÇåÕþ
- ÖÐɽÏÈÉúÔçÄêÐÐát£¬ÒòÄ¿¶ÃMÇåÕþ
- Paste your text anywhere in the edit box and preview again. You must have your text in broken characters already seen in the edit box before you paste your text. Do not delete the broken characters. Now you should see your text converted nicely. The converted characters should appears as something like 中山, which means they are converted correctly. Repeat this step if needed until you see your converted text in preview.
- 中山先生早年行醫,因目睹滿清政府腐敗
- 中山先生早年行醫,因目睹滿清政府腐敗
- Now you may delete the broken characters.
Basically, you have to paste it twice - and then delete the first one.
[edit] AskJeeve method
Another method: Enter the characters at http://www.ask.com/ , and the next screen will reveal their codes. It doesn't work with a string over 10 char though, I think.
This method formerly works on Google, now only occasionally.
[edit] Auto convertors
[edit] Mozilla
If none of the above methods work, try download Mozilla. It works very well, you just need to press "Save page". No steps at all.
