[edit] Utah State Capitol

On 12/13/05 I started an article for the Utah State Capitol. Tonight I am doing a few minor edits and additions of information to the article. It would be nice we could get more information on this magnificant building on Wikipedia. I would like to nominate this article To the expand and destub lists for WikiProject Utah. Also I would like some ideas for what should be included in the article. (Hypernick1980 08:15, 23 January 2006 (UTC))

probably the architect who designed and the contractors who built it. I would guess that information is available somewhere. BigBen212 17:09, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Utah Wilderness Areas

I am in the process of initiating articles on all the Utah wilderness areas as geo-stubs. I plan to add maps, more photos and improve the writing after the first stage of getting the basic info posted. Following a suggestion on Wikipedia:WikiProject Protected areas, I am thinking about writing a Protected areas of Utah article. This would include national parks, national monuments, Golden Spike NHS and wilderness areas, of course. It would link to a separate List of Utah wilderness study areas and the existing List of Utah state parks. Before I go ahead with the idea, I'll wait for comments. See this example: Protected areas of Michigan. Rmwarnick 05:59, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Sounds wonderful. Please proceed. I'm working on getting all Utah-based national park/monument articles and their daughter articles to feature-quality. Right now I'm working on geology of the Capitol Reef area (see Wikipedia:Peer review/Geology of the Capitol Reef area). I'd like to do the same for Capitol Reef National Park but lack a good reference on the park's biology. --mav 02:00, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team cooperation

Hello. I'm a member of the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, which is looking to identify quality articles in Wikipedia for future publication on CD or paper. We recently began assessing articles using these criteria, and we are are asking for your help. As you are most aware of the issues surrounding your focus area, we are wondering if you could provide us with a list of the articles that fall within the scope of your WikiProject, and that are either featured, A-class, B-class, or Good articles, with no POV or copyright problems. Do you have any recommendations? If you do, please post your suggestions at the listing of all active Places WikiProjects, and if you have any questions, ask me in the Work Via WikiProjects talk page or directly in my talk page. Thanks a lot! Titoxd(?!? - help us) 18:48, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Utah featured pictures

I'd like to work on getting more Utah pictures featured. I'll submit some of mine to picture peer review to see if they have a chance, but there's probably others in Utah-related articles that may qualify. — Zaui (talk) 18:30, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Utah

Many articles covered by this WikiProject lack photographs. As part of a subcategorization of the requested photos category, there is now a category for Utah articles needing photos - to use it, just add {{reqphotoin|Utah}} to the article's talk page. I have only added a few articles to the category so far, but it would be an easy way to make an extensive list California-related articles lacking photos. I hope you find it useful! TheGrappler 05:12, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

  • Good idea. I may be able to fill some of those requests. — Zaui (talk) 15:48, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
I'll get to work adding a few requests... --Lethargy 08:44, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Utah featured content

I've been working on the Utah Portal and added a section for 'featured content relating to Utah' (bottom right of the portal, or here). I want to make sure I haven't missed anything, so please look it over. Thanks. — Zaui (talk) 15:53, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] History of Utah

I created History of Utah article by copying all history material from the lenghthy Utah article. Appreciate any e input on organization schemes and outlines. Thank you. WBardwin 06:28, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New editor

I'm willing to help out with this project in what little ways I can. Mainly I am interested in expanding or creating articles on Utah's waters.--Lethargy 15:53, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Your contributions so far have been appreciated; I mostly focus on geographical features and the cities, somebody needs to do some of the stuff your doing :p. This project mostly died...perhaps we can attempt to revive it? bob rulz 19:40, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
We can certainly attempt :) BTW, how would I go about suggesting that we improve Great Salt Lake to Featured standard? Just add it in the todo list above or does it require some sort of vote? --Lethargy 08:38, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
Nope, you can just add it in if you want. bob rulz 09:32, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Proposal: Collaboration of the month

Might I suggest we start doing a collaboration every month? Currently the collaboration in the to-do list is empty, why not add a new article every month? This would allow us to focus our efforts much better than the to-do list currently does. If you are wondering what candidate I had in mind (this month): Great Salt Lake.

Certainly a good proposal, but we need to actually get the members of this project to take notice, as most of the people on the list seems to have forgotten it existed (and Cool Hand Luke and Jon Moore, two of the major contributors to Utah articles in the past, both seem to have left Wikipedia...) Like I said, this project needs some major revival. Take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones for the kind of participation I wish we had... bob rulz 09:34, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
Is it good form to invite users to participate? I've noticed a couple folks here and there creating Utah-related articles - maybe a note on their talk page just to make them aware of the project? — Zaui (talk) 20:29, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
I've seen this done with other WikiProjects with positive results, and we certainly need more people. I say go for it. --Lethargy 20:35, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Changes to the project page

I'd lake to modify a few things on the project page, but I'll clear them here first... with those members who haven't disappeared.

First, I'd like to change the opening paragraph from:

This project was formed to better organize information in articles related to the U.S. state of Utah. This page and its subpages contain various suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and add your signature below in the "Participants" subsection.

To:

This project was formed to better organize information in articles related to the U.S. state of Utah. This page and its subpages contain various suggestions to help focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please introduce yourself on the talk page and add your signature below in the "Participants" section.

I'll propose some other changes later, but for now I'd like a little input on this.

[edit] To-do list

In the interest of readability and better focusing our efforts, I cleaned up the to-do list and added dashes betwen each entry. I don't think I removed anything important, mainly I removed the counties and replaced them with a link to Category:Utah counties, as every one of them was listed in the to-do list.

UPDATE: I have also added underlines for the seperate topics (mountains, geography, etc.) and added Salt Lake City, Utah and Utah to the "To Improve to Featured standard" section. Salt Lake City in particular seems close to becoming featured.

I also added the "Pages with an open task list" section because those pages should have well defined goals we can focus on. --Lethargy 02:10, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Both of these changes help with formatting. I thought it was annoying that every county was listed there, but I never really thought hard enough to change it. bob rulz 22:46, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
Good changes. — Zaui (talk) 18:46, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] More changes

Previously, I had added articles to the "improve to featured standard" category based on what I thought were important articles. I decided it would be better to have a ladder system where articles move from de-stub to expand to "improve to good standard" (which is a new addition), etc. based on the quality of the article.

The other change (which I haven't made yet) is to place items in bold text that have been tagged for cleanup, references (using Template:Unreferenced), NPOV, etc. and add what they are tagged for. --Lethargy 23:50, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Special request: to-do lists

As often as possible, please add a to-do list to articles so wikipedians can quickly see what improvements need to be made to an article. I have already done this on Talk:Utah Lake and Talk:Great Salt Lake, and have requested input for creating one in Talk:Capitol Reef National Park.

These greatly improve the efficiency of the editing process, which is sorely needed in a project with few active members such as this one, as well as wikipedia as a whole.

--Lethargy 22:47, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for adding to-do lists to these articles. Maybe this will help kickstart some more actiivty in this project. I might be able to do a bit on the Great Salt Lake, namely a section on how the lake's climate affects the surrounding areas. bob rulz 22:34, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Capitol Reef National Park: Improvements for peer review

I have asked for some input at Capitol Reef's talk page so I can get a pulse on where we stand on the quality of the article. I'd like to know of areas to improve in preperation for a peer review so it can be listed as a good or featured article. Any comments would be extremely welcome. --Lethargy 19:19, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User template

I got bored and decided our project should have a user template. The first draft is this:

This user is a member of WikiProject Utah.

It is applied by using {{user WikiProject Utah}} and is stolen from User WikiProject Lakes. Feel free to modify it and enjoy. --Lethargy 00:14, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Looks good. I added it to my user page. — Zaui (talk) 15:39, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Utah parks template

Please review and comment. I used the format from the AZ park template.

Shouldn't Strawberry Reservoir be listed? Also, could we add the Uinta Mountains somehow, perhaps as a national forest? Other than that, it looks great to me, thanks for your efforts. --Lethargy 19:42, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
Just looked this up here, Strawberry isn't listed as a state park. Maybe we can have another section for reservoirs. — Zaui (talk) 07:56, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
It appears Strawberry is managed by the forest service. --Lethargy 18:57, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
BTW to get the template you add {{UT Parks}} --Lethargy 20:18, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
What about recreational areas? Also, different colors would be nice. Orange works for Arizona, not Utah. Jaxad0127 20:41, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
Tell that to the Utah Portal, plus it's a predominate color on the current license plate - sort of Southern-Utah-Red-Rock Red. The AZ template uses a very garish green. But I'm open to other color suggestions and additions to the template - including national forests and recreation areas. Maybe change the name to 'Protected Areas of Utah'. I'll work on it some more when I can. — Zaui (talk) 02:51, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Replaced orage with red-rock red and juniper-like green. Jaxad0127 03:36, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
I don't know - maybe a bit too Christmassy. — Zaui (talk) 07:48, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Looks better without the colors. bob rulz 09:00, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

OK, I tried some more subdued colors. Not sure I'm happy with the three lines of color in a row, but I think it needs some color to set off the different sections. — Zaui (talk) 15:53, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

There is a list of possible colors here. Perhaps some shade of blue would look good? --Lethargy 18:54, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm back after using all my vacation time for the year in the past 3 weeks... Anyway, I've changed the colors again - incorporating some blue and used tan in the first heading. I don't think it's too garish and the headings can be read over the background colors. I also removed Strawberry Reservoir from the state park section. I plan on adding an 'other protected areas' section to include places like Strawberry Reservoir. Opinions welcomed. — Zaui (talk) 19:46, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Looks good to me, are we ready to start adding this to pages now, or should I hold off for awhile? --Lethargy 20:35, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
I think we're ready. I still think we should expand it to include all protected areas in Utah. I'll work on it when I can, unless someone beats me to it. — Zaui (talk) 20:07, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
I've added the template to some articles - working from the bottom of the template through all the national monuments - and I think the blue is too bright. Maybe I'll try a light green or a tan of some sort. We don't want the template to be visually overwhelming. — Zaui (talk) 20:19, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
Now it has different colors based on the 'catagory' of park. I'll leave it along for now. — Zaui (talk) 20:52, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
No I won't. It looked too cartoonish next to the national park template at the bottom of Zion National Park so I went with for a very simple color scheme. — Zaui (talk) 21:00, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] History buff needed

Please check out List of current and former capital cities in the United States and make sure that Utah's capital cities are listed accurately. A word of warning: the page does contain quite a bit of complicated wiki formatting, so if you're not comfortable editing it, just post your changes on the talk page and someone more experienced will apply them to the article.   JEK   19:56, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Nominate articles for Portal:United States

I've worked for the past month to update Portal:United States and keep it better maintained. Though, I think the Portal:United States would be even better with broader participation. One way to do that is instead of choosing the "selected article" myself each week, if others would nominate articles and help make decisions. (same goes for pictures, though these are stocked up through July 29) If there is anything related to Utah (or anything else related to the U.S. - culture, music, literature, geography, history, politics, ...), please nominate. I'd also like people to weigh in on the nominations and help select what should be featured. Thanks. -Aude (talk contribs) 23:22, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

I nominated Great Salt Lake, which recently received GA status. --Lethargy 23:26, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New "People from [city]" Categories

Hello, everybody. I am the bozo who just recently created the new subcategories in the "People from Utah" category. I thought that some of you might want to know why they were created, and why they often have so few pages in them.

The majority of the states have "People from [state]" categories which have at least 200 entries, sometimes over 1,000. This is clearly an unworkably large number for anyone wishing to use the category for research purposes. In 8th grade in Rapid City, South Dakota, the social studies class asked us to write, over the course of the year, reports on two or three people who were or had been residents of the city. Because of that, I have reason to believe that they could be used and probably are used for research purposes. To make such research easier, I looked at the list of metropolitan statistical areas and basically entered in one new category for each metropolitan statistical area.

I know that many of these categories might well be, in the eyes of you who know more about the cities in question much better than I do, misnamed or otherwise faulty. I apologize for any mistakes I may have made along those lines, and I would welcome any corrections, including deletion, that any of the rest of you might choose to make. With that in mind, I have also generally populated the categories with only one or two names, to ease in the process of deletion or renaming.

I thought you all should know why these categories were created, and felt some degree of responsibility for letting your know. I wish you all the greatest good fortune in making the coverage of your state in Wikipedia of the greatest scope and quality possible, and I hope that I haven't annoyed too many of you by my recent actions. Badbilltucker 13:38, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Salt Lake City article status

Bob, I know you have been working hard to get Salt Lake City to FA standard, so I'm guessing you are the guy to ask about the current status. How close are we to getting it to FA class and what needs to be done?

[edit] Very interesting article that we should work on

Pando (Quaking Aspen):

Pando (or The Trembling Giant[1]) is a clonal colony of a single male Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) tree located in the U.S. state of Utah, all determined to be part of a single living organism by identical genetic markers,[2] and one massive underground root system. The plant is estimated to weigh collectively 6,000 tonnes (six million kilograms),[3] placing it as the heaviest known organism in existence.[4] The root system of Pando is estimated to be the oldest known living being in existence at 80,000 years of age.[5]

I read about this in yesterday's Deseret News (Loss of aspens worth quaking over), and found out we actually have an article about it on wikipedia. I tagged it as part of this project, assuming some of you guys might find this interesting, and might want to help expand it as well. --Lethargy 01:52, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Great Salt Lake peer review

Great Salt Lake has now been listed as a good article, and I plan to submit it for peer review soon. Before I do that, I'd be very grateful if everyone could copy-edit it (see Wikipedia:How to copy-edit) to improve grammar, punctuation, tone, etc. Also, please review it and list any opportunities for improvement here or on Talk:Great Salt Lake. --Lethargy 21:14, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

I'll copy-edit it probably later today (since I have to go pretty much now), and then I can write the section on the lake-effect as well, if I can find references. Also, I hope we have better luck with this peer review than for the one with Salt Lake City (which got zero responses...wait, nevermind, it got that automated response thing...). bob rulz 21:21, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
I hope we do better than my first and only request has as well. This article is much shorter than Salt Lake City, so it should be easier to review. --Lethargy 21:43, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
It is now up for peer-review. If you get the time, please add whatever feedback you can think of. Thank you. --Lethargy 22:59, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Herriman/Bluffdale

We need to add the cities of Herriman, UT and Bluffdale, UT to the Salt Lake City metro area in the Utah infobox. I don't know how to edit the infobox, and I am only a guest, so somebody who can do it should. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 208.187.86.38 (talkcontribs).

I added them.Jaxad0127 03:35, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Honestly, I disagree with adding them. Adding Herriman and Bluffdale would mean that we'd have to include West Point, Woods Cross, South Weber, Alpine, Mapleton, Salem, and other small, relatively unimportant cities and the template would just get flooded. I'm going to remove them (although at the rate that Herriman is growing, it may merit inclusion in a few years). bob rulz 15:57, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

I think that all areas that have been incorporated as official cities should be included in the infobox (At least, if they belong in the Salt Lake metro area or the Provo metro area). Please put them back.

[edit] Liberal Party (Utah)

Liberal Party (Utah) is up for a featured article review. Detailed concerns may be found here. Please leave your comments and help us address and maintain this article's featured quality. Sandy 20:59, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Invite

Wanted to let you know that WP:BIOGRAPHY has added a "work group" called Politics and government, and so wanted to invite you to participate on any biography-type articles. The section for Utah is here and if there's interest, we can beef it up to look like the newly-created Virginia one plange 05:38, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Good and featured content for Portal:Utah

As Zaui pointed out at Portal_talk:Utah#Selected_article, we should compile a list of Utah-related good and featured content for listing on the portal. Post any you find below. --Lethargy 22:28, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Featured

Articles:

Lists:

Pictures: Delicate Arch, Arches National Park View of Zion Canyon from Angel's Landing, Zion National Park Bryce Amphitheater from Bryce Point, Bryce Canyon National Park Virgin River Narrows, Zion National Park Winter storm at Bryce Canyon National Park West Mitten Butte Monument Valley 227 (plate number) East and West Shaking Hands at Laying Last Rail

[edit] Good

[edit] Comments

I'm pretty sure that covers it in terms of good and featured articles. A couple that I think can be upgraded fairly easy to at least good article include Arches National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Canyonlands National Park, St. George, Utah, Utah Lake, and Cedar Breaks National Monument. There's a lot of others that could use some work, but are fairly close to good article status. bob rulz 23:51, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
We would need to add footnotes and expand most of those, but I think these look like good candidates. I'll try to look over them more thoroughly later. --Lethargy 20:54, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
Bear River Massacre seems pretty close to GA standard, but before nominating it I think we need to improve the tone to be a little more neutral and formal, and some additional citations are needed. --Lethargy 01:17, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
I added featured lists that contain Utah and featured pictures relating to Utah. — Zaui (talk) 16:38, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Buildings

I added a few notable buildings to the to-do list above and am in the process of tagging them as part of the project. I don't want to add so many that it becomes a rediculous task to expand them, but I would like to know, are there any others we should cover? Post them below or in the to-do list. --Lethargy 01:17, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Possibly Rice-Eccles Stadium and LaVell Edwards Stadium, although I think of those as "structures", rather than buildings.

[edit] Invitation to new WikiProject

A new WikiProject has been started, and may be of interest to members here. It is WikiProject National Register of Historic Places. It covers all listings on the Register, in all states and territories. Should you be so inclined, please feel free to join. And spread the word to any other interested parties. -Ebyabe 19:57, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Articles on Utah governors deleted

The following articles consisted largely or entirely of text from the Utah History Encyclopedia, which as far as I can determine is not in the public domain. I've deleted them as copyvright violations and in some cases restored previous non-copied versions.

We're counting on you guys to write new articles instead. Haukur 19:47, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 19:22, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Election results 2006

I made a page for the 2006 Utah congressional elections but it needs to be fleshed out with some information about the candidates. We also need a page for Utah state elections, 2006, right now it's a red link in Template:2006 U.S. midterm elections. I'll do what I can, but the more the merrier. — Zaui (talk) 17:23, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't know much about politics, but I'll look it over and see if I can contribute anything. bob rulz 05:12, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vandal help

I can't seem to fix the blanking at University of Utah (see diff). I get a "Response denied by WatchGuard HTTP proxy" error. Can someone help please? — Zaui (talk) 21:10, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Done. Although I must admit I think the list of famous alumni is far too long and should be shortened, removed, or at the very least made into two columns. --Lethargy 01:52, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. I've seen the two-column code somewhere, I'll see if I can get it to work. — Zaui (talk) 16:25, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 22:24, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] State Legislature Project

I have started a State Legislature Project for Utah as a part of a user page and I am asking for help on this project to improve the quality and quantity of articles related to the Utah State Legislature and anything you can do to help on this project would be greatly appreciated. I will continue to work on this project and hope to have it done before the 2008 general election. Edward Lalone | (Talk) 05:57, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Utah Wiki

Okay, I realize that this is not clearly on topic. The only reason that it may be is because if it exists, it should be mentioned in the Utah article. I am wondering if there is a Utah wiki. It would be similar in operation to Wikipedia, but it would be more focused on Utah. I figured that if such a thing exists, someone here would know where it is located. I've searched and the closest that I've found is this University of Utah wiki.

The reason that I ask is that Wikipedia has a global scope. Articles must be about something that is at least of importance at the level of the nation in which they appear. I bring up this topic because I have (a few months ago) created an article about Robert Lund, but it was deleted less than 24-hours after its creation. By the guidelines for music, I had no foothold to even begin an argument for keeping it. I saved the data in case it could ever be used in the future. Recently, the article for moosebutter (no, it is not capitalized) was also deleted. I didn't create this article, but I knew that once someone nominated it for deletion it wouldn't survive for the same reasons as the Robert Lund article. I have also been considering creating other articles that would only have local interest. For these reasons, I am looking for a Utah wiki. Val42 20:16, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

I don't know of a Utah specific wiki. If you want to start one, go to Scratchpad over at Wikia and get started for free. I'm not an expert, but I think Wikipedia articles can be forked to a new wiki - if attributed? — Zaui (talk) 17:22, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
