Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sports

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It has been proposed that every WikiProject choose a single article which represents what the Project members hope each article will eventually look like, so that interested onlookers can see where a Project is heading. If this project is ready to choose such an article, please do so and link to it after the Project name at Wikipedia:WikiProject. If there are no articles ready for this yet, you may wish to focus as a group on an article which is close and/or will be relatively easy to research.

[edit] Random comments

Other random comments: Judging by the amount of sports fans out there in the world, (which I must say I am not one of them), it musn't be too hard to find people willing to write near endless quantities of material on sports. -- Simon J Kissane

you might think so, but not many of them have found their way to wikipedia yet, particularly for the more obscure sports. I've written a whole bunch of initial articles on various less common sports, but nobody else has picked up much slack yet --Robert Merkel

[edit] Wimbledon champions

Today I merged information from List of Wimbledon Mixed Doubles champions into List of Wimbledon Doubles champions, creating this new version of List of Wimbledon Doubles champions. What do you think? Should I replace the current article? - dcljr (talk) 17:23, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I disagree. They are separate championships. And I would like to see runners-up and scores on those lists as well. —Cantus 20:27, Jun 25, 2005 (UTC)

Okay, but apart from objecting to the conflating of the different types of championships, there's nothing about the way I did it that prevents more info from being added. For example, the table could start out something like this:

Year Gentlemen's pair Ladies' pair Mixed pair
2004 Todd Woodbridge (AUS) and Jonas Björkman (SWE) d. Julian Knowle (AUT) and Nenad Zimonjic (SCG) 6-1, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 Cara Black (ZIM) and Rennae Stubbs (AUS) d. Liezel Huber (RSA) and Ai Sugiyama (JPN) 6-3, 7-6 Wayne Black and Cara Black (ZIM) d. Alicia Molik and Todd Woodbridge (AUS) 3-6, 7-6, 6-4

[edit] Improvement drive

The article National Football League has been listed to be improved on Wikipedia: This week's improvement drive. Add your vote there if you want to support the article.--Fenice 20:54, 5 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Commonwealth Games

Many (maybe all) of the Commonwealth Games sites have been set up assuming there will be separate pages for (for example) Australia at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, Cayman Islands at the 1994 Commonwealth Games. It seems to me more sense to have just one for each country as seems to have been done to the Olympics.

[edit] wintersports

is there going to be a wikiproject for wintersports. Is i gong to go ahead because i can see it's been there since dec 2004 so is it just in a stand still or is some thing going to happen with it. I would like to see the project arise myself. On many of the snowsports pages i see redlinks which could be handled better if in a project, If not i would be happy to start up one with a template off another as i am not so experienced in wikipedia. Please speak to me can anyone help out. Edwardkindred

[edit] Request for Quick Sports Fix

Sometimes, if I'm of a mood to kill time and yet do some good, I'll hit 'random article' and see if the link that comes up needs any copyediting.

Ed Vosberg's article sez:

Ed was the first player to appear in the Little League World Series Tucson, Arizona 1973 runner-up, NCAA Div I Champion University of Arizona 1980, and Major League Baseball World Series Champion Florida Marlins 1997

Okay, let's make it clear: I suck at sports. And sports knowledge. shrug (sorry)

Well, first, I'm not sure if "Little League World Series Tucson, Arizona 1973 runner-up" was a single sports event. Is this saying that he was the first individual to appear in all three teams? THat really doesn't appear to be that odd; it's like me saying I'm the first person to go to Joe Schmo Elementary School, Jane Schmo Junior High School, Frank Schmo High School, and Schmoville College. Well, yeah, few people usually pick all of the same organizations to belong to.

So, I suppose if any of you know Ed Vosberg, can you clarify what this sentence is really saying, and either answer me here or make the edit in the article itself?

If I've been unclear as to what I'm asking, let me know. — WCityMike (talk • contribs • where to reply) 19:51, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Request for Expansion

  • 2006 World Outgames - are the first edition of the World Outgames and are set up as a rival series to the Gay Games. It's just about to start in a week (July 29-Aug 5 2006). It will need to be updated and improved daily.

[edit] Notability

Always a controversial topic, I know... but are there any general guidelines as to what constitutes a notable sports club? The particular examples I'm thinking of here are most of the members of the Ontario Australian Football League after Central Blues went from prod to AfD and then got speedy deleted today, but any more general thoughts also appreciated. Cheers --Pak21 15:10, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

As a third-party editor I'm not interested in sports in the least. However, reviewing articles for wikipedia format guidelines is something that can be done. Even with this the bullet for sports under Wikipedia:Notability (people) is ambiguos and poorly written. If this section is not clear my only option is to avoid all biography articles related to sports. --meatclerk 02:02, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template for [Sport] in [Location]

I'd like to see a generic template created for Sports in Locations. People have recently developed sports specific ones - see the Rugby overview template in Rugby union in Australia for example to be applied to pages such as Australian rules football in Australia or Football in England. It shouldn't just be for countries though - see Football (soccer) in Western Australia for example. The template should have the following info:

  • First played
  • Governing Body
  • National Team
  • Number of Participants (total and senior - over 18)
  • Record Attendance
  • Television (stations)
  • Clubs & Competitions
    • Major club comps
    • Major representative comps

and other info etc

Thoughts ?

--Spewmaster 04:51, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Just to let you know, a user User:Grcampbell has done this, the template is Template:Sport overview --Spewmaster 03:31, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 18:53, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] List of nationality transfers in sport

I have just created the List of nationality transfers in sport, but it focusses almost completely on the Netherlands, and on the few examples that I know. I would like to ask the members of this WikiProject to help me globalize the article. AecisBravado 00:46, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Weight training FAR

Weight training has been nominated for a featured article review. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to featured quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, articles are moved onto the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article from featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Reviewers' concerns are here. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 13:54, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Naming issues with new category

I was thinking about creating a category for sports structures/surfaces, like tennis court, football pitch, cricket field, boxing ring, baseball field, volleyball court, basketball court, dojo, dohyo, hockey rink, etc. But what to name it? Category:Sports fields? But many of these are not fields. Sports pitches? Same problem. Sports structures? That would seem more appropriate for stadiums, not for the sports "fields" around which the stadiums are built. Sports facilities? Same problem. I'm lost for ideas. Does anyone have any suggestions? AecisBrievenbus 21:38, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Either enclosures or environments, perhaps? — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 23:17, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm not too keen on those two either, I'm afraid. Enclosure reminds me of a meadow, while environment could cause confusion with ecology/climate. Surface won't work either, because that would apply to astroturf/gravel/grass/etcetera. According to Wiktionary, a field in sports is "An area reserved for playing a game." So perhaps I'll have to settle for Sports fields. AecisBrievenbus 00:00, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Missing topics

I have a short list of missing topics related to sports. I've tried to find any relevant or similar articles but I'd appreciate if any expert could have a look at the list. Thank you. - Skysmith 12:08, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Assessment and peer review?

Don't we all think it's time to establish assessment and peer review here? The vast majority of subprojects are never going to have their own, because there simply are not enough articles under these subprojects, but collectively there are more than enough, and they need somewhere to be assessed and reviewed. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 00:05, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks to User:Carlosguitar for getting the assessment ball rolling. Has that all been set up? I know there are Wikipedia Version 1.0 bot processes that have to be dealt with to make these assessements actually mean anything. Also, I think we may have to recruit among all the sports subprojects especially those that do not have their own assessment processes to get enough assessors. The individual projects' project tags for talk pages can probably be hacked to use WP:SPORTS assessments. I'll probably do this first with WP:CUE as an experiment and see how it works. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 23:15, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Declaration of Independence

When in the course of Editing, it becomes necessary for one WikiProject to dissolve the Links which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of Wikipedia, the separate and equal Project Page to which the Policies of Wikipedia entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Wikipedians requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation.

In other words, some of the members of WikiProject Sports Olympics have expressed that we should remove the name "Sports" from our project. At the time it was created, it was only meant to be a sub-project of the Sports project, but Olympic-related articles have enumerated and thus have a whole different set of policies. Since you are our parent WikiProject, I figured that I'd let you know before we declare a Revolution.

If anyone has any objections, then, against moving our Wikiproject to Wikipedia:WikiProject Olympics, off with your heads! (or just drop us a note on the project talk page, or my talk page). Jaredtalk  21:45, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Support. Sounds eminently reasonable to me. But then again, I'm not a Sports monarchist. ;-) I think the new version should still be listed here as a "child" project, because such relationships are meant to be categorical, not literally indicative of one project having forked off of another (indeed I'd bet good money that quite a few sport-related projects existed before WP:SPORTS did itself.) — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 23:55, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Yeah definitely, it would stay listed as a "child" wikiproject, but we're just taking the name sports out of the project name. I just seems right. We're not breaking all ties (as my Olympics Declaration of Independence seemed to suggest) but merely saying that we're officially on our own. And removing "Sports" does it. Thanks for complying. Jaredtalk  01:45, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Besides, the scope of the wikiproject doesn't fall only on Olympic sports-related pages, so having the "Sports" term is kind of reducing. Parutakupiu talk || contribs 23:49, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Exhibition game / Friendly match / Scrimmage cleanup

Did a bunch of cleanup in these articles:

  • Merged Fr. and Ex., fixing a bunch of POV and other problems in the process.
  • Expanded scope of Ex., because as originally written it was basically just "'Exhibition game' is the US term for 'friendly match' in football", which was utter nonsense; the term has widespread use throughout all competitive sports and games! Others had already added sections for other sports, but the article intro was still bollocks.
  • Converted Scr. to a proper disambiguation page, and did some related cleanup at Scrum (disambiguation), etc.

The detailed rationale for all this stuff can be found at Talk:Exhibition game#Merge? if anyone has questions. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 17:18, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

PS: I've wikiproject tagged the resulting Exhibition game talk page, and assessed the merged article as Start-class and Mid-importance (the original two Ex. and Fr. stubs would have been more like Stub and Low in both cases, because they were, well, rather lacking and were too narrow and competing. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 17:19, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] University of Pittsburgh Panthers

Hi, I'm with the Pittsburgh WikiProject and I just noticed the stated this article is in. I am not familiar with sports-related articles, but this one is a string of stats, and I was hoping some editors from here could take a look at the article. I appreciate any help. Thanks. --Chris Griswold () 15:31, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
