Nice start.. thanks for kicking this project off, Nae'blis! Now, first discussion - I think we should include in our "mission statement", or leader paragraph, or whatever, that this project also deals with topics under the scope of the Missouri and Kansas Wikiprojects, and part of the hope is to better organize topics under disparate project groups, part of the unique qualities of the KC Metro spanning a bi-state area as it does. A minor enough detail, but I didn't feel bold enough to make that change without at least a modicum of discussion.

- Ideas so far:
- A talk page banner needs to be made. I struggled with a Image to put on the userbox, and finally settled on the I-435 shield as being the most recognizable, bi-state image I could think of. I'm not tied to it though if someone has a better idea. We seem to be the only Interstate 435 in the US.
- Why not use the ThinkOneKC sign?
- Article/image request list; I started one informally on the /Articles subpage when I started compiling that, but it may be better to split this off into its own list and have people sign up for things they think they can write/photograph. If I can ever recharge my camera batteries I've got about 20 downtown photos, including some of the new Sprint Arena construction...
- I think it might be productive to take a look at the category structure of
Category:Kansas CityCategory:Kansas City metropolitan area. Maybe we can peek at other cities of similar size and see what they use; I believe we may have too much stuff in the main category at this point. - A lot of WikiProjects have a section for listing articles up for deletion, cleanup, needing references, etc. We may not be ready for that yet, but it may be easiest to compile if we're already adding talk page banners...

I should have guessed. nae'blis gets promoted, and starts creating projects almost immediately. A little power ... :). Anyway, here's an alternate userbox (sorry; didn't see you had already created one until after I made this one) at {{User WikiProject Kansas City}}. Reagrding pictures, the idea for pictures on templates isn't always what's most easily recognized, but what gets people's attention. The KC, MO city seal might work, but is not really a visual attention getter. Wikipedia:WikiProject Philadelphia uses a statue on their banner, so you should be free to choose whatever you want. Of course, you'd want to start collaboration and peer review and assessment on the first day out of the box. (No pressure, right?) The new Munich project just got into a little trouble regarding stubs, so I wouldn't recommend making too many new ones there, but one Kansas City stub would probably be approved. A gallery might be a good idea, if you want to make one. Louisville has templates for Colleges and universities, TV, AM radio, FM radio, and Catholic schools. I suppose you could do similar kinds of templates for Kansas City as well. Maybe one big one for the cities and counties within the KC metro area too. And, of course, you'd want to read the Project Guide for any hints you might think appropriate from there. By the time you read this, I should have added the project to the new projects section of the Community portal, so you might see a couple more members relatively soon. And I could probably make up the banner for you, if you told me what all you wanted in and on it. A photo of some kind, or at least some eye-catching graphic, would probably be a good idea. Oh, and by the way, I'm from St. Louis, not Kansas City. I've never even been to Kansas City that I know of, so I'd be basically useless for your project. Anyway, good luck. - I have been thinking about what other images might fit in well with the project banner and/or userbox. Personally, I'm not a fan of the I-435 image as being representative of the project or city. I've thought about using the city seal or a picture of the scout statue, but neither one really grabs me - and besides, I feel they are overused at this point. Sort of like I'm sure some St Louis-ians are sick of seeing that arch emblazoned on everything. Anyways, I'm at a loss at what we should use - maybe an image of the skyline? The Liberty Memorial doesn't seem to be all that well known outside of the metro, but it might work. Maybe Union Station, the new Sprint Center, the Plaza? - I agree that the arch is overused in St. Louis; however, one of the things you generally want the image on a box or banner to do is to communicate visually the scope of the project, and, in that regard, the scout statue probably succeeds as well as anything else. Personally, IF the St. Louis project ever gets started, I figure the city's flag will be the icon used, because it is allegedly one of the better city flags around and is at least a vaguely identifying symbol. If it were unappealing or unavailable, I would figure that the Arch would be the only other image which would effectively communicate the city to everyone. Regretfully, Kansas City's flag is apparently under copyright (at least that image is) and thus seemingly unavailable. That being said, as an outsider, I think the statue might as well be used as it is one of the most generally recognizable, if overused, symbols of the city. Badbilltucker 15:59, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
- I'm concerned that the Scout photo is illegible at icon size; the St. Louis Arch has the benefit of being iconic to people who don't even live there. Granted I'm not a native, but all I can see in that image is some dark leaves and a possible statue, unless I click on it. Stadiums all look alike to me (ditto railway stations and holiday lights). I'm certainly not opposed to switching away from the I-435 logo, but want it to be something that crosses state, city, and cultural lines, as much as possible... -- nae'blis 22:51, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Kansas City is known as the "City of Fountains", so why not use a picture of a fountain, like the JC Nichols fountain on the Country Club Plaza. Alternatively, photos of the lighted Plaza at Christmas have become almost iconic in describing Kansas City, so this may be worth considering as well. mobyrock 04:18, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] National World War I Museum
Just a note - the National World War I Museum opens tomorrow, Sat Dec. 2nd, under the Liberty Memorial. In light of such, I've already added a quick blurb about the museum to the Liberty Memorial article, put in a redirect at National World War I Museum, and made a see also link off of National World War II Museum. Now would not be a bad time to throw a bit more weight behind this topic. Maybe get a "in the news" mention front page? I'll see what I can do... time is not my friend for the rest of the day, though. I hope to get some real editing done tomorrow, but... [edit] Wikipedia Day Awards
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors.
