[edit] Sub-category for All Stars: Counties

I am going to start a sub-catogory for Category:Gaelic Athletic Association All Star Awards (football), with Category:Tyrone All Star (football). Does anyone have any objections? I think it is a logical step in the categorisation of All Star Winners to have subcategories for each county?? --Macca7174 15:07, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Go for it (Gnevin 18:59, 8 November 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Brackets.

I created Ulster Senior Club Football Championship 2006. Is there anyone that knows how to include the preminelary round game (Cross vs Gweedore) in the "Last 9 layout" brackets section? Derry Boi 15:20, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

I believe you'd have to switch from {{8TeamBracket}} to using {{16TeamBracket}} instead. Would be better if there was the possibility of blanking unneeded prelim. round boxes. Of course, you could subst: the template, and edit that code... Alai 07:09, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
I found this for the 1999 Rugby World Cup. Maybe you could manipulate it to the Ulster Championship. I don't know how to work the code.

It looks interesting i maybe be able to backwards engineer something for it (Gnevin 15:02, 6 January 2007 (UTC))
It seems fine for GAA purpose as is it now, what changes does it need (Gnevin 15:05, 6 January 2007 (UTC))
well, the issue arose from the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship, because it has one preliminary round match - to reduce nine teams to eight. It would also be needed, therefore, for Ulster Senior Football Championship. I would imagine the other provincial championships are in the same boat.--Macca7174 12:45, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
That works fine as is with the Ulster Club championship and i've added it ,my guess is that it will be very well used by GAA articles good find! (Gnevin 14:00, 7 January 2007 (UTC))
I have updated the Ulster Senior Football Championship now with the proper bracketstructure for the 2007 championship. Here is what it looks like.--Macca7174 23:15, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cambridge University

Cambridge University Gaelic Athletic Club has been nominated for deletion have a look (Gnevin 14:40, 17 November 2006 (UTC))

[edit] CLG Eoghan Rua

There was two articles for the GAA clubs in Coleraine: Owen Roe GAC and Coleraine GAC. It's worth pointing out that the club themselves only use the Irish version of the name. Therfore I moved Owen Roe GAC to CLG Eoghan Rua and redirected Coleraine GAC to it as well. Derry Boi 00:19, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Club templates.

Why don't we have the Irish clubname section of the club templates anymore? Derry Boi 00:20, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

How do you mean (Gnevin 21:51, 18 November 2006 (UTC))
Ok i see , should be fixed now was a bug (Gnevin 21:57, 18 November 2006 (UTC))

[edit] GAA pitch layout

As per Gnevins request, GAA pitch layout. Let me know what you all think.
-- Pauric (talk-contributions) 03:12, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Looks good can you make the following changes please .
  • Move the word midfielder up so the line doesnt block it
  • Move right half word up and into line with the center half forward and left half forword
  • Change center corner forward to center forward
  • Move the full forward line in line with the left corner forward
  • Move the full back up a bit (Gnevin 21:52, 19 November 2006 (UTC))
How's this? -- Pauric (talk-contributions) 22:10, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Thats 100% i'll add it to gaelic football ,hurling and Gaelic football and Hurling positions (Gnevin 23:11, 19 November 2006 (UTC))
Is their a case for marking line with their distance , you know 21 ,45,60 etc ? (Gnevin 19:37, 20 November 2006 (UTC))
Alright. Does it go 21, 45, 60, mid, 60, 45, 21? I'm not 100% on my Gaelic. -- Pauric (talk-contributions) 21:45, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
[1], it goes 13,20,45(football),60 (hurling) mid, 60,45,20,13 (Gnevin 23:42, 21 November 2006 (UTC))
Image:Gaelic football pitch diagram.jpg needs an extra line in for the middle and the numbers(Gnevin 23:44, 21 November 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Archive?

Maybe time for another Archive Gnevin? I'd do it, but I don't know how the talk page is getting pretty big, slow and messy here. -- Pauric (talk-contributions) 19:03, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Done (Gnevin 19:25, 20 November 2006 (UTC))

[edit] County Londonderry , Derry and Derry GAA

Jumping threw hoops to avoid the WP:IMOS is not good pratice, the use of piped links in Derry GAA articals has gotten very bad. So far i've see

Also every gaa player i've see is from derry the city surely this isnt correct ? The IMOS it is agreed wiki policy , we should follow it (Gnevin 20:54, 21 November 2006 (UTC))

IMO, using the IMOS regarding Derry GAA is nonsense. Granted it's semi-official policy, but 90% of people from county Derry, even protestants call it Derry. It's only called Londonderry by unionists outside Derry, and Brits. Now, whilst that may be somewhat off topic, what to call it and what not too, no one says Londonderry when they're talking about GAA. Whilst it may be technically accurate regarding the policy to refer to GAA teams as that, it's really overkill. I've never used the term "PC gone mad" before, and I dislike it, but it's suitable here imo. -- Pauric (talk-contributions) 21:38, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
The GAA can call its 'counties' whatever it wants since it doesn't follow whatever the civil authorities call them and nor does it follow the county boundaries of local government. (Are Co. Fingal going to win the All-Ireland next year?) In fact, strictly speaking, there are no counties in the north since the county councils were abolished. The GAA can refer to Derry, Doire, Doire Colmcille, or even revert back to 'County Coleraine' if it wants. One thing for sure, there's no 'Londonderry' in the GAA. --Eamonnca1 21:48, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
I'm not here to debate the derry v londonderry issue again, nor do i ever intend to get involved in it again, nor am getting into a debate over the WP:IMOS we already have 3 of them active on the talk page .
The fact of the matter is their has been agreement here to call the county Londonderry we should take active steps to promote this as other people will do it and wont be happy at all the tricks pulled to get around the IMOS .
Eamonnca this in not about renaming Derry GAA to Londonderry GAA its about saying x is a Gaelic Athletic Association club/player/ground in/from County Londonderry .
Now if you can get the WP:IMOS changed fine but up to them we cant ignore it (Gnevin 22:41, 21 November 2006 (UTC))

Please note there is no team called Londonderry attatched to the G.A.A. To refer the Derry G.A.A. team as Londonderry is just wrong, notwithstanding any political inferences that may be drawn from it.

[edit] Peer review of GAA articial

I have submitted Gaelic Athletic Association for Peer review have a look Wikipedia:Peer review/Gaelic Athletic Association (Gnevin 09:02, 24 November 2006 (UTC))

Good incentive, but I wish you would have mentioned that you were going to do this before going ahead, so we could have a quick once over.
A quick look over the article myself, and I see uncited sources, informal language, slight grammatical errors etc. I mentioned we should strive to work on a particular article for this treatment (well, I mentioned at the time Featured Status - I would have meant Peer Review If i had of known the channels these things go through.) I'll see what I can do about the copy, but there is already a {{sources}} tag applied to it.--Macca7174 13:15, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
Sorry for not mentioning it before it was a spur of the moment thing , The good thing is that we a getting feedback which we can work with and then resubmit for review.
As for a reviewing artical not too get FA but just to review them that is a good idea. I'd suggest week focus on Gaelic Athletic Association , followed by Gaelic football and Hurling as the first few . (Gnevin 13:40, 24 November 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Suggestions for weekly review

As per a above please add suggestion of articial in need of a review by the project as a whole (Gnevin 13:40, 24 November 2006 (UTC))

Is a very important article that needs attention can anyone help (Gnevin 10:59, 19 December 2006 (UTC))

Looking good. There are a few other overseas units too, like Europe, Asia and Australasia. Not sure if they're county boards or provincial councils though. --Eamonnca1 00:16, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
Europe is in their i can asia and australasia but they will be red links (Gnevin 13:18, 28 November 2006 (UTC))
Capitalisation? USA (excluding new york) - > excluding New York --sony-youth 10:55, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
Ok fixed anything else ? (Gnevin 12:58, 28 November 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Rename

Should Category:Northern Irish Gaelic sportspeople and its sub category be deleted as renamed by sport like Category:Dublin Gaelic footballers and Category:Dublin hurlers (Gnevin 21:37, 24 November 2006 (UTC))

yes switch to the individual counties hurlers and footballers--Macca7174 10:40, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
Done (Gnevin 23:59, 27 November 2006 (UTC))

[edit] When

When did clubs stop representing countys at all ireland level and the county team as we know it come in to being (Gnevin 13:44, 27 November 2006 (UTC))

Good question, it's on the tip of my tongue too. I'll have a look when I get home. It's in the book of stats that Croke Park produced earlier this year. I think Cork was first to put in a select team. --Eamonnca1 23:52, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
Any luck get this info? (Gnevin 01:50, 13 December 2006 (UTC))
Actually, Richard Behal's Gaelic Gazette has it, see http://www.gaelicgazette.com/allirelandfootball.htm . 1892 Congress granted permission for winning club to use players from other clubs in the county, but when the modern set-up of county boards and selectors came in is trickier to pin down. --Eamonnca1 18:21, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rolls of honours

The roll of honours on most championship pages are too long see Dublin_Senior_Hurling_Championship#Roll_of_Honour now on Cork_Senior_Hurling_Championship#Roll_of_Honour i've used div to shorten by half the lenght but its still too long , any ideas here ? My suggestions are

  1. removing them
  2. div by 2
  3. div by 3
  4. create seperate articals for them

(Gnevin 23:37, 28 November 2006 (UTC))

Dividing into two looks grand, three might be necessary in the future as it continues in the future, itl be long enough to justify a full page in bout 50years Frainc 00:15 29 November 2006

[edit] Categories

Was just looking at one of the articles mentioned above re the roll of honours, and I noticed that Cat:Gaelic football competitions contains a lot of hurling articles. I take it this was an accident and these are to be de-categorised from there? -- Pauric (talk-contributions) 00:24, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Yeah added in error ,i'll run awb on it tomorow (Gnevin 00:29, 29 November 2006 (UTC))
Fixed (Gnevin 16:25, 30 November 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Photos!!

I have got permission from a Flickr user to use his photographs on wikipedia. Some of them are great action shots, but unfortunately there aren't many clear photos of individual players alone.

Here is an example of one of his pics, which I have saved in wikimedia commons.

Image:Tyrone Panel 2005.jpg--Macca7174 14:23, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

You'll need to ask the user to re licence the image [2] as
  • Attribution by

or

  • Attribution-NoDerivs

or

see [3] (Gnevin 14:43, 1 December 2006 (UTC))

I have changed my opinion of Flikr , it has made whole sale changes to the licences it uses and it has left most image from flikr on wiki in breech of Copyright(Gnevin 15:43, 3 December 2006 (UTC))
Does that mean we can or can't use them? because I've noticed other players profiles now have pics that I had earmarked on Flickr. For Example, Colm Cooper, and Donal Óg Cusack.--Macca7174 15:53, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
If they are now tagged as non commercial they should be deleted (Gnevin 10:02, 11 December 2006 (UTC))

I have nominated List of footballers (Gaelic football) for deletion have your say over at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of footballers (Gaelic football) (Gnevin 23:27, 19 December 2006 (UTC))
