[edit] Fire Service

Is there any interest in expanding this Project to include more of the fire service. There are many articles which could fall under a Fire Service WikiProject. Any interest? Let me know!--Daysleeper47 21:19, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

List them in here. I'd love to see it. SchuminWeb (Talk) 04:10, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
What I had in mind includes but is not limited to:
Famous Fires - includes both wildfires and structures
Cocoanut Grove fire
The Station nightclub fire
Cedar Fire
Fire Departments
Arlington County Fire Department
New York City Fire Department
Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service
Fire apparatus and related
Fireboat
Seagrave Fire Apparatus
Turntable ladder
Fire Service tools and terms
Backdraft
Hook ladder
K-tool
Some of these are already tagged as belonging to WikiProject Diaster Management, but that is clearly not entirely appropriate. This project could easily act as a cousin project (I am a member of that Project). Some things like the stub template already exist. Thoughts? --Daysleeper47 05:01, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:Fire

This should be an integral part of the project, if it isn't already Escaper7 20:38, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Adding new articles

I've been scanning for new articles for the project. Just added around 85, total article count is now 342 --ArmadilloProcess 08:07, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Firefighting movies

I think that (non-documentary) movies with Firefighting as a theme should be in a separate sub-category of Category:Firefighting e.g. Category:Firefighting movies (fiction)) possibly Backdraft (film), City on Fire (1979 film), The Towering Inferno (film) --ArmadilloFromHellGateBridge 15:39, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

  • Armadillo, I am only hesitant for two reasons. One, I hate categories that only have two or three items in them. I look at categories as being inclusive and somewhat broad, not exclusive. Secondly, I look at The Towering Inferno, Backdraft and Ladder 49 as being so important to the development of the public perception of the American firefighter that they belong in the more general category. That being said, this is a public project, don't let me stop you. --Daysleeper47 16:33, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
That's why I asked - I'm not sure enough myself. I was tempted to make a "Fire movie" category a few days ago, but I was not going to put it under Category:Firefighting, then I found that in fact several of the movies already were in Category:Firefighting. I'll ponder about it for a while. --ArmadilloFromHellGateBridge 17:55, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

I am totally new to Wikipedia project talk so I have posted this request in the correct place. I am working on a colloraboratie project as well. Please take a look at The Firefighter Story to see if 1) you will reference this page, and 2) contribute to the story we are writing as a chapter contributor. Thanks, MindyBlock

    • I was unaware of this discussion when I created List of firefighting films as a page (not a category), but now that it exists I hope it addresses the need. Fjbfour 18:28, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Categories

The fire department categories are somewhat complex and intertwined, I've been doing some obvious cleanups, such as double listing of a category in it;s parent and grandparent, when no benefit was had by doing that, and moving a few things around. There are some other things I would like to suggest. I have a manually created picture of the current structure listed at User:ArmadilloProcess

I would as a start suggest removing

I'm not sure Category:Rescue should be in Category:Firefighting it's related but has a lot of non-firefighting articles. It's already under Category:Emergency services anyway, so Firefighting is redundant. --ArmadilloFromHellGateBridge 04:00, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] FireService-stub

The stub template listed on the project page does not seem to work --ArmadilloFromHellGateBridge 07:09, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

  • I fixed the template. I made it on the project page, but hadn't gotten around to moving it to its actual template page. --Daysleeper47 13:47, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Article count

In the last week I've added quite a few emergency equipment makers, and fire fighting vehicles, mostly helicopters, added some categories, and searched Wiki for certain keywords to find existing articles that had not previously been in a firefighting category. Today I've gone through a number of relevant categories, and added articles to this project that were not previously tagged, but I did not add all articles in all scanned categories, since some are borderline. Article count this morning was 477, it's now up to 552. These categories were checked to ensure that any (appropriate) missing articeles are now included.

  1. Category:Fire boats
  2. Category:Fire brigades of the United Kingdom
  3. Category:Fire departments in California
  4. Category:Fire departments of Australia
  5. Category:Fire departments of Canada
  6. Category:Fire departments of France
  7. Category:Fire departments of the United States
  8. Category:Firefighting museums

  13. Category:Toronto fireboats
  14. Category:USDA Forest Service Fire
  15. Category:Wildfires
  16. Category:Wildfires in Australia

--ArmadilloProcess 21:55, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure the point of several of these categories, especially Toronto fireboats and Loudoun County Fire-Rescue. I live about 20 miles from Loudoun and nothing about it warrants anything special like its own category. The only department which is developed enough material to warrant its own category, in my opinion of course, is FDNY. Anyone have thoughts on some of these? --Daysleeper47 00:17, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
I also don't think Loudoun County needs its own category.Cmcnicoll 13:05, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Branddaskere

Branddaskere
Branddaskere

In Denmark a "branddasker" (literally "fire slapper") is a very common tool to fight minor fires in grass or fields and that alike. It functions by slapping the fires on the ground, which sucks out the oxygen causing the fire to be put out.

As I can see English Wikipedia does not have an article about this topic. So is it a tool used in USA - and in that case what is it named? Tried my dictionary without help.. --|EPO| 17:26, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

I have never seen such a device in the United States, but feel free to add an article. No reason to exclude foreign devices. Thanks! --Daysleeper47 02:20, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
I wouldn't mind starting an article about it in English. But I wonder under what title I should write. Could of course call it a fire slapper and let it be moved if somebody discovers a real name for it..
Anyone dare to make a guess? --|EPO| 22:15, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
Well, I have no problem with branddasker, especially if the tool is only used in Europe. Start an article either way. --Daysleeper47 00:15, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
I agree that branddasker seems reasonable, although there may be an English name as I live in the UK and have occasionaly seen something similar at the edges of (reasonably) local forests, although to be fair I have no idea what use a giant fly swat is agains a forest fire.... Blood red sandman 00:19, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
Surely it won't help much in a blazing forest fire. It is most suitable for minor fires on e.g. a harvested cornfield or grass areas, where the flames either are very small or just glows. If the burning area is pretty large you would normally take out the high pressure hose from the fire engine and/or water cannon from the tanker truck. Then this tool will only be used for supplement water.
I will make the article in a moment under the name branddasker. --|EPO| 15:43, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
Surely it won't help much in a blazing forest fire. I must say I agree. Crazy that they're there. That's the state our government is currently in though; identify a problem, and throw a panic-induced 'solution' at it. Will be good to have the article. Blood red sandman 15:51, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
I suppose the idea of placing them is to get a chance of stopping a small fire to turn into a huge fire. Kind of like the principles behind first aid. A fire extinguisher won't help you alot if your whole house is burning - but it can stop the burning curtain to ignite your gas cooker. --|EPO| 16:54, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
This looks pretty much the same as a Fire flapper (tool) used in the United States and Canada. The U.S. version has a rectangular rubber flap but the function is the same. In wildland fire you'll see them widely used on prairie and grassland fires in the American Midwest, but not so much on big western fires where other tools are more suitable. Also useful in fireline patrol on prescribed burns. You don't really beat the flames with them, rather run along the edge of the flame and drag the flapper as you go, which extinguishes the flame and creates a firebreak. Any opinions on whether to merge the two articles? Dragomiloff 14:26, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
I think they can safely be merged to create a more in depth article in small fire tools. Other thoughts? --Daysleeper47 19:25, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
That could be a way to do it. Not a bad idea. Either way not best to have two seperate articles. --|EPO| 20:00, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Removal of talk pages from Fire Project Category

I fail to understand why the pages were deliberately removed from a fire project category by the change to the template. Law enforcement Talk pages are in Category:B-Class Law enforcement articles and biographies are in Category:Biography articles of living people --ArmadilloFromHell

  • I agree. If you check out the offending editor's talk page, you will find some dialogue between he and I about that. I plan on adding it back. If you feel so inclined, please do it. I am pretty busy here at home with Christmas stuff so go on ahead if you have time. Merry Christmas, Daysleeper47 22:34, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
If I have time I will, but unfortunately I'm working tonight, so if I have time I will. It sure would make maintenance easier. --ArmadilloFromHellGateBridge 23:09, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
I've raised the issue on his talk page as well. Hopefuly the weight of multiple members from the project will convince him of the error of his ways. Blood red sandman 23:24, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
I've also reverted the edit to the template. I pray to Awa we don't get an edit war over this... Blood red sandman 23:28, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for being WP:Bold. While the category is back in place, I grabbed the count - which is now 572 articles and categories. --ArmadilloFromHellGateBridge 00:33, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
I disagree entirely on this revert and will do what needs to be done so that articles that have nothing to do with this project be removed from this submarine categoring. any articles that have not been edited by the members of the project or do not have anything to do with it will be stripped of their 'owned' by the FireService Project. Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons 22:43, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
Although I haven't tagged every article, please provide examples of articles tagged by this project that do not relate to the Fire Service, its equipment, administration, notable fires/disasters, etc. I welcome your comments Captain.--Daysleeper47 22:56, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
I have changed the wording from "is part of" to "is within the scope of". I hope this adresses your concerns about the template sounding like it 'owns' the article. Blood red sandman 23:30, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Subproject/Subcat categorization

I was thinking of redoing the WP:FS article template to include some additional information similar to what Template:WPMILHIST includes, maybe under the following subcategories:

  • Fire Departments
  • Fire Equipment
  • Fire Apparatus
  • Fire-related law or code

Please include more if you can think of any and provide thoughts on this in general! Thanks and Merry Christmas! --Daysleeper47 00:25, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

I can't actually think of any more, at least not of the top of my head, but as an idea this sounds pretty good to me and has my support. Blood red sandman 23:31, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

I like the idea also, but I also can't think of any other points at the moment. I can help automate the procedure when we decide to go ahead, since I have AWB scripts already set up for scanning the fire categories. --ArmadilloFromHellGateBridge 01:18, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

The only other thing I could think of would be firefighting/rescue techniques and procedures such as Ventilation (firefighting) or Confined space rescue. Epolk 19:08, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WPFireService Sidebar

I started this template {{WPFireService Sidebar}} off of a template from WP:Taxation. It needs some work. I encourage all WP:FS editors to take a stab at correcting it for future use. --Daysleeper47 14:49, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 23:19, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] UK fire service articles/FDNY BFI

Today, I started Kent Fire and Rescue Service - that's about 20 now out of more than 40 - just for England's FRS. When I started editing Wikipedia there were about four, so that's a massive improvement in a short space of time. If anyone wants to add to the mix - great. Info box at the bottom shows which articles are still needed. If you start a new one, don't forget to update the Fire service in the United Kingdom (see table), article with a Wikilink. While I'm here, I was thinking about starting an article on the FDNY Bureau of Fire Investigation, but I can't find any substantial info on the FDNY web. I have some experience of working with them in 1993 - but I need more concrete sources. Any thoughts? Escaper7 18:08, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

I think any article detailing FDNY Bureau of Fire Investigation should be included in the primary FDNY article. The FDNY article also needs to be cited in a variety of places if you would like to start that effort. --Daysleeper47 18:36, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm, I've devoted quite a lot of time to the FDNY article which was until recently lacking NPOV. I'll try and look over it again some time, but I'm trying to concentrate on UK articles as that's where my experience lies. I think FDNY is too long, and that's the only reason I'd like to see a BFI article. It was the subject of a book by Peter Micheels called Heat which I could use as a source for refs. All a bit complicated by Fire Marshal (should it be Fire marshal?), see: [Talk:Fire Marshal]. It does have a sub-section on FDNY's BFI. The question for me, is if the BFI is one of only a few, (or possibly the only) fire department arson investigation unit, that employs firefighters, trains them as marshals and gives them a gun that's quite interesting - especially to a UK reader where firefighters are never armed. I've seen those guys in their firefighting rig at an incident then strip back to collar and tie to investigate the crime. Regards Escaper7 23:44, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
In the US, the armed fire marshal is quite a common thing. The 6 FM's in my department are all armed and are law enforcement officers. All Pennsylvania State Fire Marshal's are also State Police officers. Feel free create the article if you like, but my experience is that the FDNY BFI is not much different than those elsewhere in the US. --Daysleeper47 04:20, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

More on UK FRS articles: These articles are growing on a day-by-day which is very good. If anyone wants it, heres a link to use a reference when citing "a brigade was formed under the Fire Brigades Act" Good reference for historical dates from LFB. That Wikifys into: Fire Brigades Act 1938 or (1938) - it's also listed on Wikipedia. I'll change some of the existing articles as and when, but any help appreciated. Regards Escaper7 17:51, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

ps here's the stub for the FB Act: Fire Brigades Act 1938 —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Escaper7 (talkcontribs) 18:09, 29 January 2007 (UTC).
And another stub please try and expand/use, it was the main legislation for firefighting ni the UK for more than half a century: Fire Services Act 1947 Thanks. Escaper7 18:38, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] german, anyone?

Hi, I'd like to ask if there's somebody who speaks german and would like to participate in the german Wikipedia: There's an article de:Feuerwehr in den Vereinigten Staaten (fire service in the US) which has been of mixed quality for a long time. I just added a paragraph on US equipment and tactics, but I have to admit it is all kind of second-hand-knowledge and I would be grateful if someone would bother to take a look at the article. Yours, 790 19:23, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I don't speak German and haven't run across anyone from the WikiProject who does. I will keep my eyes open, however. --Daysleeper47 21:58, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

A cautionary example in Der Struwwelpeter. In this situation, the best thing to do is to stop, drop and roll.

Hi, folks. This is not exactly in the project's scope, but there's no better place, so: I tried to find data on children playing with fire on Wikipedia, but it doesn't seem to be covered. The subject is notable and verifiable and as such should be included. I think we should start a new article by the name of children and fire, which could also cover such subjects as trying to hide from fire. Some possible sources are here, here, here, here, here and here. Additionally, match-games have apparently damaged Marske Hall and burned Namsos to the ground. I'd quite like to use the image on the right. What say you? --Kizor 16:01, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Feel free and see what you can come up with. The title should be Children and fire. Please create a well cited article. I can help with some minor cleanup. If you need me to, just ask. --Daysleeper47 21:58, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
Right-o. I'll aim to try it on Monday. --Kizor 22:13, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
Okay, I'll try it on a Monday. --Kizor 17:17, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fire Department/Firefighting/Fire fighter/Fire Station

There has been discussion on the Fire station page about creating a seperate article for Fire Department (which currently redirrects to Fire Station). In the course of the discussion, we realized that there are several articles that are similar and perhaps should be merged. These are Firefighting, Fire fighter, Fire Department and maybe Fire station. There seems to be some repeated information in these articles, and merging them may be the best course of action. If you would like to see the original discussion, you can read it on the Fire Station talk page. --Tech Nerd 22:47, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

I've been adding to said discussion on the Fire station page, and I think those are really the big four of a Fire Service project. However, I noticed on the Firefighter page that it's tagged as not representing a worldwide view. Perhaps we could trim it down, and then have pages like "Firefighting in the United States" and "Firefighting in Europe" or a more specific country. Also, perhaps firefighting could be merged with firefighter (maybe), and fire department could take over fire station. Thoughts? I don't know where to go. Also, with an article like fire apparatus, we could make the central 3 or 4 articles of the project? --MPD T / C 23:40, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
I don't think Fire Department should "take over" fire station - they are different things. However, overall I think you have a good idea there, perhaps having one central "Fire Services" page, which would have a brief overview of the whole thing, then break it down into littler chunks - fire department (an agency), fire fighter (a person who fights fires), fire apparatus (the vehicles used by firefighters), fire fighting in fill in country, etc. Fire fighting could perhaps become the fire services central page, as it is kind of the main idea - fighting fires. Do any other users have any ideas? --Tech Nerd 00:43, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
There is a central page for the UK: Fire service in the United Kingdom I would propose anything that specifically rleates to the UK being added to this article. It's comprehensive but could do with a few more images. Fire should be a separate article because it's of interest to scientists - in other words it's a subject not soley relevant to firefighters. The terms fire station and fire house interchange between UK and US respectively; the terms fire and rescue service (correct definition) and fire department interchange between UK and US. Regards Escaper7 05:51, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WP:FD General Order: Article Assessment

General Order 07-01-01
From: Daysleeper47, Office of the Fire Chief
To: Wikipedia Fire Department

Effective immediately, WP:FD will start to assess articles within the Project. I encourage all members to take part in this project. To see if an article needs to be assessed, please visit. Any user can assess articles from Stub or Start classes, but B Class and above should be discussed on this talk page.

To tag an article, simply add |class= to the talk page Project template. It should look like {{WikiProjectFireService|class= }}. Add whichever class you feel is appropriate. The current list of article assessment classes can be found here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Fire Service/Assessment

This venture is still in the early stages of development. If any editors would like to help, the Article Classification pages needs developed further. It should explain this venture and link to the assessment scale. Let me know if you can help of feel free to just start making changes. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for all your hard work!

Requesting permision to be 'let loose' with the full range of assessments - I've been assessing articles with WikiProject Shipwrecks since it was proposed, and have been through hundreds of them, so I feel pretty confident in assessing without going here on a case-by-case basis. Blood Red Sandman Open Up Your Heart - Receive My EviLove 07:27, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
Feel free. I have to admit I have been tagging articles B class and above without any concensus, so please feel free. The important thing is that we quickly assess them. We have several hundred articles in the project which require assessment. --Daysleeper47 17:59, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks; I'll add it to my already rediculously long to-do list, but I'll treat it as a priority if I can. Blood Red Sandman Open Up Your Heart - Receive My EviLove

[edit] WP:FD Logo

How's this? Bobanny 19:13, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
I like the image a lot. Excellent. Is there a way to remove the background so the image is only the maltese cross? That way when I put it on a different colored background, it doesn't look awkward. Does that make sense. I'm not sure I am explaining well. --Daysleeper47 19:20, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
I deleted the background, but note that it's a white background now, rather than no background. If there's a way to have only the cross as the entire image, I don't know how to do that. Cheers. Bobanny 19:32, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Junior Firefighter

I believe that this article needs to be seperated and expanded. The idea of Junior Firefighters is a general statement. But each kind has its own wiki-worthy points of information. Being a former Explorer, I have a good amount of knowledge on that particular subject, but as for actual Juniors, Cadets and the such, each should be expanded, or given their own pages. I feel that expanding on them would suffice, but I am new to this WikiProject and think this should definetly be discussed.--FiftyOneWicked 21:32, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Are there any graphic design/computer art guys interested in producing the various crests of the UK Fire and Rescue Services for inclusion on the Wikipedia articles? Adobe Illustrator art is probably going to be best.

Seeing as I asked first (!), if anyone is up for the challenge, can we have Greater Manchester first?! Hope so. Thanks, Jhamez84 15:46, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cribbing

I just created a new stub, Cribbing (rescue). Feel free to add to it and expand it into a good article. Dragomiloff 02:56, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Peer review/1991 Hamlet chicken processing plant fire

Comments on at the above review would be greatly apreciated; I am currently pushing for FA for this article. Blood Red Sandman Open Up Your Heart - Receive My EviLove 19:08, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Infobox Wildfire

I created a new infobox for wildfires. Please find it here and tag any wildfire article you come across. Template:Infobox wildfire --Daysleeper47 19:27, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

I have also added it to the list of templates at sister project WP:DM. Thanks, Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 12:46, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image problem

Hi,

Is there anyone in the project who is either aware of how to format images in articles or knows someone who is? Because a concern for a current attempt at FA (the one I mentioned above) involves resizing images in the article. While I have tried similar things previously, I always failed miserably, so it would be good if someone could just drop in and sort them out. The article is here and the concern is here. Thanks, Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 12:50, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Hiya! I just finished fixing the photos. The proper syntax for images is: [[Image:Source.ext|thumb|right|250px|Caption]] SyBerWoLff 15:43, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks; I shall bear that in mind in future. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 16:38, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Famous figures

I added Frank Brannigan's bio to the project, and can think of a number of others that might be appropriate. I know I just joined the project, but I've been working on articles that are project-related for a couple of years now.--catseyes 21:33, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
