[edit] duplicates noticeboard

This is a good start, but it mostly duplicates the much better established Wikipedia:Canadian wikipedians' notice board. - SimonP 21:44, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

  • True, but there are advantages to projects over notice boards. Assessment and collaboration are two of the big things a WikiProject can easily do that a notice board can't. Badbilltucker 18:08, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Question

Have you put the project on the Wikipedia:Community Portal section for new WikiProjects yet? It can't hurt. Badbilltucker 18:08, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 18:30, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Modification

I'm afraid I haven't added all the featured articles, etc. yet. Hope someone else can do that. Badbilltucker 21:04, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] extra categories

There are sub-categories for Canada-related articles by importance and Canada-related articles by quality. But there are also empty sub-categories for Canada articles by importance and Canada articles by quality. Can someone with admin power get rid of one of the sets, please? --Arctic Gnome 23:14, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

When you spot something like that, just put {{delete|Reason here}} to notify the admnistrators. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 05:33, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Assessment and Wikipedia:WikiProject Government of Canada

The Assessments for Wikipedia:WikiProject Government of Canada and WP:CANADA are merged; that creates some confusion, as the importance scale has different criteria and priorities. Shouldn't they be split? --69.19.14.27 19:41, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject Germany has just created a task force which has a different set of importance criteria than the main project. The project could probably copy what was done there in creating a few variations in the banner to accomodate the difference. If figuring out how to do so is difficult (I don't know, I haven't checked), let me know and I'll see what I can do. Badbilltucker 21:01, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
After creating the Government of Canada template, I noticed that none of the other Canada workgroups had an assessment scale, so I replaced all of the {{CanGov}} templates with a cangov=yes tag on the {{WikiProject Canada}} template. Now none of the workgroups have their own assessment scale, which I don't see as a problem. It works well for both WikiProject Canada and WikiProject Government of Canada to list, for example, Government of Canada as top importiance, Canadian House of Commons as high, Minister of the Environment (Canada) as mid, and 7 Rideau Gate as low. --Arctic Gnome 18:54, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
Assuming we mark Ministers's as mid, I'd assume we would still mark a Ministry itself as High. Deet 00:14, 4 December 2006 (UTC) I've moved the discussion of importance calibration to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Government of Canada. Deet 00:39, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Current Events Canada

I just created the Current Events Canada Portal. If you wouldn't mind taking a look at it, contributing, adding to it. I think it could easily become a featured portal. Mkdwtalk 09:32, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dispute

[edit] Feature list candidates

You may be intereted to know that no less than five Canada-related lists are currebntly Featured List candidates, and your votes would be welcome. Tompw (talk) 15:28, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The banner

Can I add that banner to some articles about Canada that I know don't have it, notably the communities on Vancouver Island, as they are part of Canada, and most of them are rather small and/or stubs. Kaiser matias 04:05, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

I think if it's an regional specific article, you should add the banner of that region (i.e. WikiProject Vancouver) AQu01rius (User • Talk) 05:18, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, I found the BC WikiProject (didn't even know it existed), so I'll utilse that. Kaiser matias 06:54, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Canada-related articles by quality...

Wondering... how are the quality measures generated? I'd be interested in doing this for a few other projects I'm working on. :) Nephron  T|C 05:51, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, we use the standard assessment system used for most of wikipedia, but there are a few project groups that modify or expand this system for clarification within their subject. JQFTalkContribs 17:25, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Canadian topics template

I can't quite figure out if the Canada Wikiproject is behind Template:Canadian topics, but I'd like your comments either way. I'm a little skeptical as to its value, or at least its scope. I'm not sure who is going to jump from an article on New France to an article on Canadian hip hop. Will any and all elements of Canadian culture end up included in this template, and then have it included in their article?

I think it makes sense to have this kind of thing at the bottom of the Canada article, to clean up the See Also section, but I'm not sure its of any value at the bottom of every Canada related page from history to hiphop. - TheMightyQuill 07:42, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Province templates

In short: should the provincial templates be updated with the standard {{Navbox generic}} layout?

The provincial navigation boxes have been harmonized/consolidated in January 2006, see discussion.

The {{Navbox generic}} layout allows the boxes to collapse (automatic by default, can be customised), and has direct shortcuts for view/edit/discuss. The content would be identic, but a little compacted, and would fall in line with other navigational boxes.

Please share your thoughts. --Qyd 23:04, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

It won't be identical, as the flag will show up centered, not in the left-hand corner. That, I think, is the only thing that's a problem. It looks much better with the flag in the corner.  OzLawyer / talk  12:49, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
Yes, the look would be different, only the content (links, groups, title, even bar color) would be identical. The present layout is well thought and looks good, but stands out (lower width, whitespaces) between other navboxes, compare St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador or Victoria, British Columbia to Winnipeg. --Qyd 15:32, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
I say no! I have two big objections to using {{Navbox generic}}. The first is that is asthetically not good (background colour on group capations, everything's all left-aligned, no control over width). The second (more important) is that the show/hide fetaure *still* causes problems with many people's browsers, including my own. I'm generally in favour of standarising the content and format of the nav-boxes, just not with {{Navbox generic}}. Tompw (talk) 00:19, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
The general alignament can be set (right, left or center), the width of the group can be somehow forced (with "br" tags; line spacing can be also controled with "span" tags, but the syntax gets ugly). Nothing can be done about grup color (short of substituting the master template, something that would break user acessibility). Regarding browser issues: are you using the default monobook skin? Thanks. --Qyd 01:33, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
Yes I am... (though any such template should work in every skin, especially the default one). I also meant width of the box itself, though I know that's not an issue here (unlike say {{Canada}}). I felt it important to draw these issues to people's attention.
Also... when I said that it's a good thing to standardise the content and layout, I meant where there is overlap.... there will obviously always be things that are applicable to certain templates. Tompw (talk) 13:49, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, 3 editors say nay, so I'm going to drop it. --Qyd 05:20, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Turned out they were converted anyway by someone else. I'm going to list them here for comparison. --Qyd 16:52, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

{{Nunavut}} is still a bit different. --Qyd 16:52, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] List of Nunavut general elections

Could someone please do an assesement of List of Nunavut general elections? I've contibuted too heavily to be objective enough to do myself. Tompw (talk) 00:23, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Canadian rock

Hi, I am currently interested in setting up a Canadian Rock wikiproject and I was told to ask and see if it could be a subproject of Wikiproject Canada. There is a temporary project page here and at this point, there hasn't been a lot done because there hasn't been a lot of interest (yet) and I have also been busy recently. Thanks for the time, Scorpion 21:45, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Sounds like a good idea. That link goes nowhere though. Also, are there any similar projects that might serve as a model? Bobanny 21:52, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
I think I fixed it. And no, there is no similar project for other nations, at least not for multiple genres. I have considered expanding it to Canadian music, but I'd like some other opinions, especially from an administrator. -- Scorpion 21:54, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 21:47, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

NOTICE IS GIVEN THAT the scope of WikiProject Ottawa is being debated. Your input is requested. Thank you. GreenJoe 20:15, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Canadian car articles

Per List of vehicles sold in Canada but not the United States, I am looking for help on expanding vehicles that were sold in Canada only. If anyone can help me I'd appreciate that. --SunStar Nettalk 18:13, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Huge Issue Not Adressed

There was recently some unpleasantness over the issue of the terms White Canadian and European Canadian. I'm not here to re-hash the arguments over the pages that were set up for those terms. But I am concerned about their use in other Canadian-history articles. I belive when talking about "caucasian" settlers moving from Ontario and Quebec to Alberta, to differenciate them from First Nations, we should call them White settlers, not European. European should be reserved for people who came directly from Ireland or Ukraine or Germany. Can we and should we have a common standard on this issue for Cnd History articles? Kevlar67 01:15, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Canadian Forces

Category:Canadian Forces is up for merging with Category:Military of Canada, which is odd, since Category:Royal Canadian Air Force and Category:Royal Canadian Navy are not being considered, even though CF is a force structure just like the RCAF, RCN, and CA it replaced. see Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2007_January_18#Category:Canadian_Forces

70.51.8.140 07:36, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal

Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal are up for renaming at WP:RM, discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Current Local City Time. They want them renamed to Ottawa, Ontario, Toronto, Ontario, Montreal, Quebec, even though these cities are obviously the primary meaning of Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal. 70.51.9.156 06:16, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Vancouver BC, and cities in general

At Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (settlements), there are two discussions going on:

  1. to make city names match the way Associated Press names them (thus introducing a significant US bias)
  2. to make Vancouver a dab page (wasn't this handled already?)

70.51.9.114 06:06, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Financial services in Canada

Currently, we only have financial service articles on Banking in Canada and List of mutual fund companies in Canada (both of which I started). Currently the category structure is:

Category:Economy of Canada
Category:Banking in Canada

I propose:

Economy of Canada
Financial services in Canada
Banking in Canada
Mutual funds in Canada
Insurance in Canada
Investment brokerage in Canada (or Wealth management or whatever)
(etc)

Do you think this is the right approach, or will it demote banking too far down? Deet 04:00, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

I think it's needless categories. I think you can put those all under Economy without the need for the "Financial Services" category. GreenJoe 04:45, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
How does it compare to other countries? We are supposed to make these types of cats easily comparable to other countries. Kevlar67

[edit] List of mayors in Canada

There are some of us who have discussed the fact that the List of mayors in Canada is overly long and would be easier to maintain if split into provinces. Do you agree? Disagree? I'm not sure how much discussion should take place before undertaking the task, so all opinions would be appreciated, at the article's talk page. PKT 23:46, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

It's long all right, and it could even get longer, but I don't know if splitting in by province will help. Maybe do that and on the main page just show the mayors of the top 10 largest muncipalities by province, and links to the provincial sub-articles. Kevlar67 03:02, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

A related point and question - in travelling through the various towns/cities I found several infobox formats for municipal data, some of which are badly broken (especially in BC). Do we have a preferred version? PKT 21:48, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Canadian Heraldic Authority

Canadian Heraldic Authority has been nominated for a featured article review. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to featured quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, articles are moved onto the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article from featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Reviewers' concerns are here. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 17:16, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] parserfunctions for Infoboxes

I have made substantial logic changes to {{Infobox City Canada}} and {{Infobox Town Canada}} to convert the ugly old style CSS hacks to parserfunctions. I tested them with a few pages and it looks to work, but be on the look out for potential problems. TheDJ (talkcontribsWikiProject Television) 00:35, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 2007 Canada Games

2007 Canada Winter Games have just started. Can people do updates for it? Ccccccccccc 06:40, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] James Beveridge

Hi guys. I would like some help regarding this person. He is a Canadian film producer and seems to have produced many documentaries. He doesn't have a wikipedia article. Could someone find something about who he was, and whether he passes wikipedia's notability test? It is written somewhere that he was the co-founder of the national film board of canada. Could someone verify that? Thanks. - Aksi_great (talk) 08:48, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Go for it. Google his name, and see what material you find. Don't be shy about starting the article. PKT 16:22, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Help Request

I'm currently working on the Portal:Current events/Canada. It's a WP:FPC at the moment. I've had very little contact with this WikiProject as most of my Canadian work I've done on my own. However, I'm now at a point where I desperately need some help. I noticed awhile ago that the articles 1993 in Canada to 2007 in Canada already existed when I started on my work for the portal. Since the Canadian current events portal now has daily content posted I have started the creation of articles such as February 2007 in Canada.

To cut to the chase, these articles need to be inserted into pre-existing Canadian related articles. Would you all now start inserting [[2007 in Canada|2007]] rather than [[2007]] when linking future articles relating to Canada? The same for the months. Thank you, Mkdwtalk 09:13, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Peer review

A new Peer review request has been placed for Calgary, see Wikipedia:Peer review/Calgary. --Qyd 18:30, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Request for images

The Canadian National Vimy Memorial - Previous images were found to be copyvio, and now the article is left with a photo of a coin and a newspaper image of Hitler's visit. Skeezix1000 16:47, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Consolidating rating and talk page banners

To simplify the rating system and to reduce the banners on talk pages would the members of this project consider using the {{WPCities}} banner with a subgroup option for the Canadian city articles? The WikiProject Biography does this for politics, arts & entertainment, etc. It just seems redundant to rate all city articles with more than one project. Alan.ca 11:38, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Canadian of English descent vs English-Canadian

Someone renamed English-Canadian as Canadian of English descent, when the English Canadian article talks about english speakers. There's now a Requested Move discussion as well, to make the move official. 70.55.88.134 03:42, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bilateral relations discussion

I would like to invite you all to participate in a discussion at this thread regarding bilateral relations between two countries. All articles related to foreign relations between countries are now under the scope of WikiProject Foreign relations, a newly created project. We hope that the discussion will result in a more clean and organized way of explaining such relationships. Thank you. Ed ¿Cómo estás? 18:54, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Rating of Pierre Trudeau article

Someone or some folks from Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada rated the Trudeau article A-Class on the quality scale. On the other hand, Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography has rated it B-Class. I would like some dialogue as to the reasons for these ratings. I am familiar with the rating scale and find that, as good as the Trudeau article is in some ways, its lack of references does seem to fit more with a B-Class rating rather than A-Class. I am working on editing the article and adding citations, but suggest that we hold off on the A-Class rating for now. Thoughts? Please discuss here Sunray 22:00, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

A-class is only given if the article is certified as "completed". Doesn't seem to be the case here, I have reverted it to B-class until the article is submitted for A-class review. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 22:54, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, mate! Sunray 00:18, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
