[edit] Proposal: photo contests challenges

Bristol is a fantastic city to photograph, and there are several Wikipedians, and loads of non-Wikipedian photographers in Bristol. This is a proposal to use the Bristol Wikiproject to improve the already high-quality collection of Bristol photos and give all us Bristolian photographers some fun challenges. The proposal is to set up a series of photo contests, where we pick a different subject (either a specific article that needs illustrating, or a specific shot that we currently have a suboptimal image of) and give e.g. four weeks for people to shoot their entry followed by a week of peer review and voting for the best (several contests can overlap so there is always one in the voting stage). As far as I know no other Wikiprojects (yet) have anything similar to this proposal. I think it would be fun and good for Wikipedia, what do you think? How many people would be interested in taking part? I'm cross-posting this to flickr, if you know of anybody/group else who might be interested, please cross-post. It might be better to say all photos added to Bristol articles in a month reather than making everyone travel to a specific location which might be difficult. I've added a new photo of the church in Bishopsworth - can I submit that even though know it's not a very good photo (I'm a point and click photographer with an old camera)? — Rod talk 19:54, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
I don't think such a setup would be quite as useful -- it would end up just being a montly award for the nicest photo. It may be that my idea appeals much more to the photographers than to the wikipedians (I got a positive response on flickr) because they like the idea of competing with other photographers to get the most interesting shot of a particular subject. Additionally I doubt it would have as much an effect on improving the comprehensiveness and quality of Wikipedia's Bristol photos.
I intend to give at least four weeks notice of each topic, so there should be a reasonable chance to get out and shoot. Joe D (t) 20:06, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Can you help to imrpove the listing of Bristol museums at List of museums in England? Only 2 were listed when I looked - I've added British Empire and Commonwealth Museum & SS Great Britain but there must be others that should be included, although I couldn't see many on Category:Visitor attractions in Bristol. Should we have an entry for the Maritime Heritage Centre next to the Great Western Dockyard/SS Great Britain? — Rod talk 20:13, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Would it be appropriate to have a project "list of achievements" or similar on the project page. Bristol & Avon Gorge have made GA status, and the harbour could probably make it before long. The Council House and Exchange have both featured recently on the front page in the "Did you know" section. List of Sites of Special Scientific Interest in Avon is now a featured list. I've just come accross the articles for Crofts End, Bristol & Clay Hill, Bristol & they seem to refer to the same place & focus on Crofts End Church (they all need a bit of tidying/wikifying). Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. While I was creating some template for the Nursing wikiproject I put together some userboxes so that members could add them to their user pages. While I was at it I did one for the Bristol wikiproject. If you want to add it insert {{User Bristol project}} & it will show as:

This may help to know who is working on Brizzle pages - as I believe one of the previous suggestions was a list of members on the project page. [edit] Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. [edit] Proposal: Inviting editors to join this WikiProject

I recently received an invitation to join WikiProject Munich after I edited the Munich article, which I thought was quite a clever idea. Things are a bit quiet around here at the moment, so I thought that it might be good to copy this idea to try and get some more users involved here.

Whenever anyone edits a page related to Munich, Template:WP Munich Invitation is posted to their user talk page informing them of the existence of the WikiProject. I've made a version of that template for our purposes, which is in my sandbox at the moment, but will be moved to Template:WP Bristol invite, that can be posted on the talk page of anyone that edits a Bristol-related page. That is an optional parameter so that we can let people know why they are being invited. You can either use {{WP Bristol invite}} for the generic version, or you can use, for example, {{WP Bristol invite|Horfield}} to include the line "Thank you for editing the article Horfield". [edit] Members list & photo challenge

I like the idea of having the invite/welcome template above to encourage others to participate in this wikiproject & I was going to use it when Fig wright edited Politics of Bristol. I then realised I didn't really know who was aware of, or involed in, the Bristol Wikiproject & I didn't want to send it to those that are already involved! Most other projects have a list of "members" so I've started one on the WikiProject Bristol page. If people could add themselves & interests then we could avoid using the invite template to those who are already on board.

While doing this I noticed all the dates on the photo challenge have long past & it seems inactive - but I'm loath to delete it if others are still actively working on it or interested in getting it going again. What do others think?— Rod talk 20:35, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

I'm not averse to the idea of competitions as such, but I think if we want to 'fill in the holes' as quickly as possible we would be best not to encourage people to all photograph the same thing. And January ain't the best time for photography here. I would welcome some general debate on what makes a good subject for a photo to accompany an article on an undistinguished place (I have added all too many pictures of churches myself); and specific ideas for what to photograph as landmarks for various localities around Bristol. [edit] Spam on Bristol-related articles

A bunch of linkspam has been added to Bristol-related articles by Bristolhistorybuff (talk contribs) and 82.45.2.76 (talk contribs), they very kindly added over 2kb of advertising for their website to the Bristol article, which I have since reverted. I could do with some help going through all the other pages that they've added stuff to and either revert what they've done or tidy it up. Some interesting information has been added to Longwell Green, but it seriously needs tidying up. The only article which should have an external link to this website is, IMHO, History of Bristol. I'm at work at the moment, so I can't really sit here fixing it all myself. Gasheadsteve 09:43, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Hey Guys, Got an invite from Gasheadsteve to join the WikiProject, but I figure I may as well post my response here. I'd be happy to give a hand, but at the moment my own personal computer isn't working so I have to use my brother's PC which I only get fairly limited time on. However, I do plan to buy myself a new PC soon (hopefully) and I'll keep you guys posted on that.

I'm also still a bit of a newbie when it comes to most things on Wikipedia, I tend to just add little bits of info here and there.

I thing there needs to be some list of all the roads, statons, ect in bristol because otherwise its gona be hard to know what we have and dont have. mark999

I think a list of all the roads in Bristol would be overkill :) As for the others, that sounds pretty useful. I'm planning on having a tidyup of the project page at some point (unless some nice person reading this wants to do it), and I'll add that to the to do list. I've created a navigation template called Template:Areas of Bristol which I've added to the bottom of the appropriate articles. We could also do with a template to go on the talk page of all articles that come under the WP:Bristol umbrella, similar to Template:Bio or Template:Football, to advertise the existence of the project and to help with keeping track of the status of all 'our' articles. [edit] Talk page template

I've made a rough version of a template to be added to the talk page of Bristol articles, based on the ones used by other wikiprojects. It's not very pretty at the moment, but the functionality is there.

It has five optional arguments:

  • class, which is the standard of the article as it stands. The valid responses are those listed at Template:Grading scheme, i.e. FA, A, GA, B, Start, Stub or NA.
  • photo - whether or not the article contains or needs a photo
  • map - whether or not the article needs a map
  • ibox - does the article need an infobox?
  • stats - states whether the article needs statistical information, e.g. population, visitor numbers etc.

The last four arguments all have the same possible values:

  • yes - this information is already contained in the article
  • needs - this information is needed by the article
  • na - this information is not required by the article

If you don't enter any value then that piece of information is not displayed on the screen.

At the moment the template is at User:Gasheadsteve/Sandbox2, and it is transcluded on User:Gasheadsteve/Sandbox3, so if you go to Sandbox3, you can try different values and see what happens. An example of valid symtax is:

| photo=
| map=needs
| ibox=na
| stats=needs
}}

It also puts articles into categories based on the values entered, for example photo = needs would put the article into Category:Bristol articles needing photos. This means that we can lose the very large table on the project page with the status of each article listed on it, this will be replaced by categories. [edit] Weclome to new members & work to do

There seem to be quite few new members of this wikiproject over the last couple of weeks & this seems like the best place to say welcome.

Activity does seem to have increased as well & I don't think Gasheadsteve's comment on 18th Jan that "Things are a bit quiet here at the moment" applies any longer.

The use of the Template:Bristol on a lot of the Bristol related articles means we have a much better idea of where we are at & what needs to be done. There are still 114 articles which are unassessed, which need to be rated with the scale at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Assessment FAQ, and we have 90 stubs, 61 start class, 18 B class, 1 Good article, and 2 A class. Of these 91 need an infobox, 100 need maps, 127 need statistics and 72 need photos.

Obviously one of the main purposes of the project is to get the main Bristol article to meet the featured article criteria and any edits/suggestions for this would be welcome. We could put it up for Peer review to get more suggestions of how it could be improved, if you think that is a good idea?

It can be more fun to work together to improve an article & many projects have a "Collaboration of the Month" (or week if there is enough interest) - do you think this would be a good idea, would you participate & which articles would you nominate for this?

I'm sure there are also Bristol related topics which don't yet have an article - these could be included in a "requests" section on the project page.

Hello! I've just popped along in response to the invite i recieved after modifying the public transport page. I've just had a go with St Andrews page, i'll get together some photos in the near future too. I can probably contribute in Montpelier, St Andrews, Transport, UWE but i'm relatively new to Wikipedia so i'm not too confident about creating boxes and fancy things like that. Some articles don't have infoboxes (& there may be some that don't need one or there isn't a suitable infobox available). For areas of the city this would be population data, but for museums, footbal grounds, concert halls etc this may well be capacity or attendance figures. For buildings & structures could be height, diameter, year of construction etc. For ships it's length, beam, displacement etc for schools it might be number of students on the roll etc - so it really depends on the sort of article.— Rod talk 15:26, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
I think some info boxes would be really good for i) areas of the city eg. [edit] Areas of Bristol

As a resident of Bristol i'm a bit confused about all the area names, confounded by the fact that they're always referred to differently by different people, organisations and government. An example is perhaps Ashley Ward which is a govt. designated Ward, with a census count and lots of data about it but on Wikipedia it's referred to as Ashley Down (and in most of my real-life experience also), but in fact the area, or parts of the area are variously referred to as Montpelier, St Andrews, St Pauls and so on.

Is there a way for WikiProject Bristol to clarify all of these - i'm not sure how exactly, perhaps the officially designated wards could have priority and then have something on those pages that links to the areas that are included in that ward - for example??? I'm primarily concerned that we don't end up duplicating data for example parts of Gloucester Road are in St Andrews, and also in Bishopston so both those articles are likely to have something on Gloucester Road but that's a bit confusing perhaps for the reader. I realise area names are very wishy washy anyway, but it might be worth a try... Any thoughts? Gazzelle 14:09, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

I've lived in Bristol all my life and this confuses the hell out of me too. There's loads of places on the list in Template:Areas of Bristol that I've never heard of before. The problem with the areas/districts/suburbs/divisions or whatever else you want to call them is that the boundaries all seem to be fairly flexible, and new names for places seem to be invented all the time, usually at the whim of estate agents trying to make the location of a house sound better. Perhaps it would be better to either divide the template Areas of Bristol in two, with council wards in the top section and other areas in the bottom, or have two separate templates with this information. I think it would also be a good idea to start a new article called Areas of Bristol or something similar to explain the status of the areas fully. I haven't really got time to do this myself at the moment, so I'll add it to the to-do list on the project page. Gasheadsteve 18:31, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
I've also been very confused by this with trying to do the infoboxes etc. I've also not heard of some of the areas which means I don't know where to start looking on my map sources etc. Iused to live in Lockleaze but estate agents called in Horfield ! (I now live in Somerset). A suggestion for a way forward which could be explained in the article Areas of Bristol and reflected in Template:Areas of Bristol.
Wards of Bristol (to include all those on Ward finder - probably using the same title) ie Ashley, Avonmouth, Bedminster, Bishopston, Bishopsworth, Brislington East, Brislington West, Cabot, Clifton, Clifton East, Cotham, Easton, Eastville, Filwood, Frome Vale, Hartcliffe, Henbury, Hengrove, Henleaze, Hillfields, Horfield, Kingsweston, Knowle, Lawrence Hill, Lockleaze, Redland, Southmead, Southville, St. George East, St. George West, Stockwood, Stoke Bishop, Westbury-on-Trym, Whitchurch Park & Windmill Hill. (NB I don't recognise some of them & not sure about East & West descriptors) - each of these would include a list of the other areas we have articles for which are contained within them. The smaller areas should include reference to the ward within which they are contained.
I don't know how we could deal with articles like: Bristol city centre & Canons Marsh which don't relate to wards.
I have some major problems with articles which were added to the template & 1 line articles created - which I think may be put up for deletion unless we want to expand them ie: Ashton Vale, Baptist Mills, Bristol, Botany Bay, Bristol, Burchells Green, Bristol, Chesterfield Park, Hillfields, Bristol, Kingsdown, Bristol, Newtown, Bristol, Ridgeway, Bristol, Rookery Farm, Rose Green, Bristol, St James Barton (I thought that was just the name of the roundabout), St Philips Marsh, Bristol, Two Mile Hill, Bristol, Victoria Park, Bristol and Whiteway, Bristol. I agree that we could do with a purge of some of the sillier places from the list. When I created the template I included all areas that were mentioned in as many articles and categories as I could find. I didn't want to make the mistake of leaving out a 'good' area just because I hadn't heard of it, but on the other hand perhaps I should have been a bit more selective. All of the single-sentence artices may meet Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion (A1 - Very short articles providing little or no context), so we need to decide which to expand and which to get rid of.
Like I said before, I don't want to delete stuff just because I haven't heard of it, but I'm going to prod St James Barton and remove it from the template. As far as I can tell it only applies to the roundabout and the flats where Avon House North used to be. Gasheadsteve 20:25, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

I've also prodded Chesterfield Park. I can't find any information about the place anywhere. Someone questioned it's existence way back in August 2005 on Talk:Bristol, and nobody posted a message confirming its existence. Gasheadsteve 20:41, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

I've put a merge tag on Greater Bristol & Avon (county) - has anybody got any thoughts about whether both of these articles are needed?— Rod talk 20:20, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

I agree that some of it should be merged into Avon (county), but perhaps some of it could be moved to Bristol urban area or into a new section of Bristol? It would be useful to have a definition of the Bristol urban area somewhere on Wikipedia. Gasheadsteve 20:51, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

I also added a few more assessment boxes to Bristol articles. I've done a bit of editing on Bristol Blitz and Bristol Riots as one was replaced with (relevant) copyright material & the other had an "expand" tag on it since January. I've also just come across Churches in Bristol and List of Buildings in Bristol, which I didn't know existed until today. The main article for Bristol has undergone several edits recently & I think is approaching a comprehensive state with good quality writing, pictures etc. Do you think it would be worth putting it up for Wikipedia:Peer review to get other suggestions for improvements which could be made to it? This is one of the normal stages before nominating an article for Featured Article status. I don't think I can do this as I already have Mendip Hills going through a peer review prior to an FA nomination. If someone is willing to put Bristol up for review, it does mean that we need to monitor the comments and suggestions & be prepared to make the necessary edits. I found a pointless, unencyclopaedic and incorrect list of Bristol buildings earlier, so I turned the article into Buildings and architecture of Bristol. I don't have time to do much more on it though, so if anyone wants to take over, and perhaps add a section that can act as an introduction to the lists of listed buildings? Thanks - I think it still needs info on residential buildings eg Crews Hole was built for sailors in the 17th century and became a major industrial centre in the 19th OR Fishponds was built in the victorian era etc..
