Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Australian maritime history

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is the talk page for discussing improvements to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian maritime history page.

Surprisingly, the Articles section does not seem to include articles on early colonial passenger ships e.g. Parmelia (barque). This should be in scope, shouldn't it? Also convict ships e.g. those in Category:Convict ships to Western Australia and Category:Ships of the First Fleet? Hesperian 00:23, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Please put it all in - we are still at work in progress in relation to the main project page - please help create a good template for the start of things ! SatuSuro 05:23, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] article assessment

Having an independant review of the article from within the project is beneficial to editors prior to FA and GA. I was thinking instead of a seperate system why not link into the parent project Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/Assessment. What does everybody else think? (Gnangarra forgot to sign) Gnangarra

[edit] Ports

I've done my bit for this project today by turning List of Australian ports into one of my Gazetteer-based lists. The main advantage for us is that the entries now link to the location of an article on the port itself rather than the port's location. For example, the previous list contained an entry that linked to Fremantle, Western Australia; now the corresponding entry redlinks to Fremantle Harbour.

I still need to disambiguate some of the entries. One question we need to consider is: should there be separate articles for port and town when the town is named after the port e.g. Coffs Harbour, Port Augusta?

Hesperian 13:53, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

I think there would need to be single articles - unless the town article is already large with no port related info - or the port had long history and lots of data about it SatuSuro 14:16, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

I'd like to see a separate article for each of the dozen major ports: Port of Fremantle, Port of Melbourne, Port of Brisbane, Port of Newcastle. See Category:Ports and harbours of Australia for existing articles. —Moondyne 15:24, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image needed

I've added the project to {{WP Australia}} option of |maritime=yes but we need an image for the project that can be used to populate templates and a user box. Gnangarra 02:13, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

This is how it currently looks, I've found a gage roads image for now use {{WP Australia|maritime=yes}} Gnangarra 02:24, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

I tried another img: Image:Endeavour IB.jpg but it hasn't refreshed or I did something wrong. I gotta go out now, will look at it later. Feel free to revert. —Moondyne 09:08, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Seems OK now. —Moondyne 09:54, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
That image is more interesting, the gag road image was just put something there Gnangarra 14:53, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] War time operations

This obviously needs links to the military history mob - but I do think we need it in SatuSuro 07:20, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Concerns

I'm a bit unsure what direction this page is going. People (and I'm probably the worst offender) are just adding links to articles and external sources and statements of ideals willy-nilly. If this is going to work, we need some structure. The to-do list should list articles to be created or expanded. Reference materials should list external and WP resources. There shouldn't be any overlap. There needs to be a single section stating aims and ideals. We don't need to restate editing policies that already exist in other WP policies. I will do a cut and burn in the next day or so if someone doesn't neat me to it. —Moondyne 01:45, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

What this page has shown me over the last week or so is how much stuff is already in Wikipedia related to AMH that I didn't know about. Perhaps it will serve as an index of sorts. —Moondyne 01:48, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Not sure of the protocol here, can I tag articles with WP Australia|maritime=yes that already exist, eg Catalpa rescue or only after a significant change? Ghostieguide 23:07, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

You can tag them any time. Hesperian 23:17, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Maritime archaeology

Hello and congrats on setting up this new project. I've added Maritime archaeology to the see also list - please categorise relevant articles with Category: Maritime archaeology, and please also contribute to the articles in this category as it is a bit of a lonely corner of the archaeology project at the moment! If someone could add a section on the maritime archaeology of Australasia (or Southern Ocean/Coral Sea etc) to Maritime archaeology, I would be very grateful. Thanks, and I look forward to comparing views on relevant discussion pages! Viv Hamilton 17:45, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia categories

It appears there a considerable number of underpopulated categories - anyone on how these should be displayed? List - or with sub-cats layed out as well? SatuSuro 08:20, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

As there has been low interest - I will continue to try to tweak that sub page again soon SatuSuro
