Me

I'm going to try to reduce this list a little bit. I hope there's not too many albums needing conversion not listed here... Gflores 19:15, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

Jebus, Gflores, when you say you're gonna do something, you really mean it. I've been hunting down albums to add to the list and it looks to me like there are probably between three and five times more albums unlisted than listed. I'll post what I've found so far. Cheers for all the work you've put into this, it's awesome. --Qirex 12:36, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
You've got to be kidding me!? Three to five time more albums? This is going to take more time than I expected. Ok, well I have some stuff to do this week, but I'll be back this weekend. PS I really hope there isn't another change in infobox! -Gflores 20:42, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

a helpful aid

I've developed a very simple program to help with this tedious conversion. If anyone would like to use it, leave me a comment on my talk page or here. Yes it is very flawed, but maybe it'll be of some help. :) --Gflores 05:47, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Is very flawed. I suggest that editors just edit the page manually Jobe6 Image:Peru flag large.png 05:05, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

Ok, I think I'm about done here. I'll check back here in about a month. Cheers. --Gflores Talk 21:33, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

Done?

Looks like we could have this done in a week or two at the rate we are going... good news, eh? Although, there are tons of albums with no infobox. gren グレン 01:55, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

As Qirex said, there are probably three times more albums needing conversion than are listed here. Wonderful, isn't it? :) Gflores Talk 23:28, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
I'm currently doing another forage for more albums which need infobox conversions and albums which need infobox creations, and I'm beginning to think that my first estimate was skewed towards over-estimation. Basically, I started on old music and progressed gradually to more recent music. Of old music there probably was 3 times more albums unlisted than listed, but of more recent music, the ratio doesn't seem quite so ridiculous. At a guess, there are perhaps one or two hundred out there which need a conversion and are unlisted, but it's hard to gauge because of the continuous, fluid nature of Wikipedia. --Qirex 03:54, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
I'm ready when you are. :) P.S. Maybe we should create a category for infobox conversion to make it easier to add albums? Actually, I think I'm going to go ahead and do this. Gflores Talk 06:01, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
Created it now, if you really want to use it. Use either one of these... {{needsinfoboxconv}} or [[Category:Needs album infobox conversion]]. Gflores Talk 06:32, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

So, who wants to point and laugh at how wrong I was? :O gren グレン 08:46, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

I finished the 0-9 section, we are on the way to being finished! Nooby god 15:50, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

Bot

After my request for a bot, someone has taken up the task of creating one that will convert these to the new templated infobox. We should try and find the albums needing conversion and put them here. BTW, here is the bot, Crypticbot by User:Cryptic. Send him a 'thank you' if you'd like to. Gflores Talk 05:18, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

Searches

bgcolor="orange" album - A few false positives but I'd imagine that's at least another 1000+ more to add, if anyone feels up to it...

Oh, and also bgcolor="darkturquoise" album, bgcolor="darkseagreen" album, bgcolor="plum" album, bgcolor="salmon" EP, bgcolor="gainsboro" album (Chocolate didn't turn up any real hits). - Lee (talk) 01:58, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

I added a bunch more (the first three pages of bgcolor="orange" album -infobox, plus any other albums by bands on those pages). A lot of the chronologies in the existing old-style infoboxes are totally screwed up. And here I was hoping we were almost done! Slicing 12:32, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
Perhaps it'd be easier not to move those over to this page, considering over 36 pages. I've told User:Cryptic, the creator of the CrypticBot who's been helping us out these conversions about these new searches, so we may not need to transfer over them to this page. We'll see. Gflores Talk 16:47, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
Eee. This, at least, makes me feel better about continuing to update the parser. On the other hand, even with this tool, this takes a painfully long time to do; the conversion routine runs interactively, and requires frequent manual touchup - basically, anywhere you see a gap of more than a minute in a run of album-related edits in Special:Contributions/Crypticbot - so it's not, strictly speaking, a bot.
By far the most common problem is when a catalogue reference shows up in the old infobox; I've been converting these by hand into little tables near the bottom of the article, as seemed to be precendent. However, I do not have the background to be sure of what I'm doing here and am nearly as uncomfortable doing these conversions as I am in removing the numbers entirely. Suggestions for a more mechanical way to do this would be welcome; merely flagging all the articles with catalogue numbers for conversion by hand isn't practical. (I could perhaps move the catalogue number into an html comment and still flag the article for manual touchup by someone else.) Lyrics links are a similar case, and while these are easily moved to external links, I still need to do it by hand at the moment.
Tangentially related, I've been logging cases of infoboxes that don't have all the fields filled in. There are, however, a fair number of false positives, particularly in the chronology, as there's no way to know whether they're missing because the information wasn't there or because they actually don't exist. Would it be helpful to drop the list somewhere? —Cryptic (talk) 18:17, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
Yes, I'd be willing to take a look at that list if you posted it somewhere. Perhaps on a subpage under the nearly-useless Incomplete infobox page? At the moment I can't think of a more mechanical way to convert the tables. Are there any specifics you aren't clear on, or is it just the entire infobox in general? —Slicing 11:08, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
Done, at Wikipedia:Wikiproject Albums/Incomplete infobox/Automated. And no, it's just the catalogue entries. —Cryptic (talk) 14:40, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

Some thoughts on that list, for future conversions:

  • tables with no cover should automatically have Cover filled in with Nocover.gif and not get flagged
  • If possible, strip the wiki-links from years in the chronology section — this could probably be done by a simple replacement of ([[ with ( and ]]) with )

As for the catalog numbers, there are currently no guidelines for where to put those; some pages have them listed (in <small></small>) next to the record label, but that's impractical for multiple releases of an album. You may want to just avoid those, if that's possible, until we work out a guideline. —Slicing 02:56, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

A search has been done on wikisign by User:Mike Dillon. This list contains (~500?) albums needing infobox conversion. Gflores Talk 01:49, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

I believe the list contains 983 articles. It may have a few articles that actually do have the infobox because of a MediaWiki bug (reflected in problems with "What links here" for templates). I'm running a hopefully exact count now (results to appear here). The database dump is good as of January 25, 2006, but that should find all old infoboxes. Mike Dillon 02:11, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

Category:Pages needing an infobox conversion

Just wanted to let you know that Category:Pages needing an infobox conversion is available for all pages needing an infobox conversion. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 23:59, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Magnetic Fields

The magnetic fields album "Holiday" is converted and all that, but a lot of information is missing. Could really use some additional info. Much appreciated Eyeball kid 21:06, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

Bayside

Same for the Bayside disc, but the album covers gone missing. See if anyone here can maybe find it. Thanks again. Eyeball kid 21:59, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

If you mean Sirens and Condolences that should be fixed now. Seems the .jpeg ending was changed to .png, for some reason[1]. Flowerparty 20:53, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

finished (?)

Everything's been taken care of...well nearly everything. The Innocence Is No Excuse page is all weird. Should I just go ahead and delete it? Eyeball kid 23:21, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Lots more added for your editing pleasure. —Slicing (talk) 07:19, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
more is OK too. Dan, the CowMan 09:35, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
no it's not. Eyeball kid 01:18, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Finished again (?)

took care of new set of pages. Eyeball kid 17:21, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Nice work! There are seven left over in Category:Needs album infobox conversion. —Slicing (talk) 03:57, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Still more albums need conversion

I doubt this page gets much traffic, but all the albums that link to here need infobox conversion. I recently fixed all the piped links to [music (album)], except for categories, image pages and album and song pages needing infobox conversion. So it's pretty easy to see which articles there need it. Also, all the albums by KC and the Sunshine Band, Kool and the Gang and Loverboy need conversion. Hope this helps, and I plan on eventually digging into those. --Alcuin 03:44, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
