Wikipedia:WikiReader/Frankfurt

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This Wikireader has gone to print; however, if participants are interested in continuing to translate articles related to Frankfurt please join us at Wikipedia:WikiProject Frankfurt

We have been offered a unique opportunity to create a new English Wikireader, free of charge, in time for Wikimania in association with Qoop.com. This collaboration is to gauge the interest level of on-demand production of books from Wikipedia content and to show the delivery of Wikipedia content through on-demand print tools.

[edit] Preparation for printing

Articles must be completed by Monday, July 25

Please edit these articles into a suitable shape as soon as possible since this is going to press on July 25 for shipment in time to reach the show August 4, 2005.

The German Wikipedia has considerable experience preparing Wikireaders, and we can learn a lot from them. Please see de:Wikipedia:WikiReader if you can read German. See de:Portal Frankfurt Rhein-Main for suitable articles in German which could be translated if you feel that there are any articles in German that are missing in English, but please remember that time is of essence here.

Special care should be taken that the articles and images do NOT contain any copyright violations. There won't be time to test print a sample, so articles and images need to be checked before Monday.

[edit] Previous discussions and technical details

In the initial discussions between Qoop and Jimbo, two solutions were presented. One allows users to select and pull content and have that formatted into a PDF for digital printing on the fly. Users will be able to pull content and create a custom cover for their book and we can deliver it to them via on-demand one-off printing. This is the tool Qoop are hoping to deploy. The other solution is set books which are created, edited, formatted, and updated in a more formal process, which they also want to experiment with.

The process and printing are completely digital as Qoop will pull and create a PDF for printing. Color books would be ten times more expensive to produce. In one-off scenarios, the user could choose either way, but for the mass printing of the books for Wikimania, all will be black and white.

QOOP is donating 400 books based on the Frankfurt theme (chosen by Jimbo Wales) for Wikimania. The books are perfectbound with color covers and black & white interiors. The length will be approximately 50 pages, but determined by the final article count.

The book will include the full text of the GFDL, a list of all authors, and some basic front-matter about the Wikimedia Foundation as an introduction. A list of the contributors to the articles in the original list (only including edits made before July 20) are at Wikipedia:WikiReader/Frankfurt/Authors. This list will need to be updated again once the final edits to the book have been made on Monday.
