Should Wikipedia put ads on its site? It's a perennial debate, with many Wikipedians of the opinion, "Absolutely not." But last week, web site rankings from comScore showed Wikipedia stronger than ever, and inspired many comments on the Internet estimating the potential income Wikipedia could rake in.

One of these posts was on Calacanis.com, titled "Wikipedia leaves $100M on the table (or "PLEASE Jimbo, reconsider--media philanthropy could change the world!"), The post was advertised on Digg.com, and widely discussed on the site.

The author of the blog, Jason Calacanis is CEO of Weblogs Inc, which is now part of America Online. He's a veteran of the dot-com industry, who is a self-proclaimed fan of Wikipedia. He joins us from his home base in California.

  • You blog posts have started an interesting conversation. And it started with a blog posting that began, "I sat next to Jimbo at a Wikipedia dinner over the summer. I begged him to put a leaderboard on Wikipedia and told him I would get AOL to sell it and host Wikipedia--for free." Could you tell us what happend after that? Was this at Wikimania?
  • Were you surprised how much attention this has gotten?
  • Do you think folks will be less likely
  • What would happen to in-kind donations
  • Would ads necessarily affect the community, traffic, people who point to content?
  • What would you recommend other than leaderboard advertising for Wikipedia?

Script for German Wikipeidan Poupou

Very few people know what Methodical culturalism is. But just this past month, the topic became the talk of the German Wikipedia. That's because on October 22, the German community concluded its fifth writing contest, and out of about 80 entries, Methodical culturalism came in first.

Here to talk about the contest winner, and the resulting controversy, is German user Poupou. She was a member of the community-elected jury and is also an administrator on German wikipedia.

  • So tell us if you could, what exactly is methodical culturalism?

  • Can you explain what methodical culturalism is very briefly?
  • Is it odd that there are no interwiki links? That is, no other wikipedia has an article on the topic.
  • Was there real anger in the community? Why?
  • The jury member who "deserted" the jury, can you describe what happened?
  • Is the battle over? What is the long term fallout?

  • While members of WikiProject philosophy celebrated the jury decision and proposed it as a candidate for featured articles, a storm of protests broke out.
  • Many Wikipedians complained the article was obscure, incomprehensible and irrelevant.
  • The debate became even more emotional when one of the jury members of the contest deserted his colleagues and joined the protesters.
  • He even went so far as to propose the article for deletion on AfD leading to an edit-war and the protection of the article - without the deletion notice.
  • The featured article candidature was cancelled prematurely when the vote count reached 18:30 and the article was moved into the review section. In sum: Wikipedia theater at its best - or worst?
