From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organise information in articles related to the railways of the United Kingdom. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. WikiProject on UK Railways

[edit] Scope

The aim of this Wikiproject is to coordinate the huge number of articles relating to railways and rail transport in its different forms within the United Kingdom. It is hoped to produce a more structured and clearer arrangement for users. Its scope includes the history of the railways of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as well as the current situation covering everything from the architecture, companies and structure, passengers, plans for the future as well as the trains themselves. Plus hopefully it will help keep articles up to date in the changing industry we have today.

This Wikiproject was started on 6th April 2006 and needs lots of work doing so if you can help out please do! Everyone is welcome to join and help out no matter how much you know about railways, just add your name below and check back here to see what's going on.

[edit] Projects

Please add any project you think we need doing.

  • Find out just what things there are out there already and how its organised: is it, in fact, organised at all?
  • Consider a method of recording the closed stations on the railways. The present system does not allow them to be included
Could you explain more? What problem are you addressing with this project? Great Western Main line shows numerous closed stations, as does List of closed railway stations in Britain. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 19:15, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
IMHO when you go via an info box from station A to station B via closed station Z, you can't obviously include it as the next station, you have to mention it in the line article text or each neighbouring station's text. Pickle 16:59, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Consider nomenclature: how to best describe a particular stretch of railway (SOR). Words such as line, route can be confusing when the manner in which services (ie the trains running over the tracks, and given names by the TOCs) also include them. The query (see talk) about the Great Northern Route is a case in point, as it describes a route as "a combination of lines" (surely not?). The North Downs Line is another, where the services make use of a combination of SOR (cp Brighton Main Line). Is it important to describe in geographical terms each and every SOR, saying that XX Line uses all or part of each one, or is using the TOC name sufficient?
  • Are we looking to add historical details to both the SOR and each station article along it? At present a large proportion of station articles appear only to say who is running the services and give the timetable. I guess it is just a question of trying to produce a stock article, without adding much more detail Peter Shearan 06:24, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
  • I have created articles on the subway stations of Glasgow but they need significant expansion, as well as links from other sites. Simply south 21:55, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
  • Anyone wanting to expand upon the stations of the Severn Valley Line (both the open and dismantled sections) is welcome to improve/enhance the stuff I've submitted.--7severn7 17:51, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
  • Adding articles related to viaducts and bridges of the UK railways

[edit] Tasks

Please add any tasks you think we need doing.

  • Agree a naming convention for UK rail transport stations - Wikipedia:Naming conventions (UK stations)
  • Create articles for all the missing railway stations (albeit based on current naming convention). How to include closed stations?
  • Standardise station listing pages which are currently in two different styles: Category:Lists of railway stations; and Category:Railway stations in England et al. Both list only those stations still open.
  • Update station articles for new (post 1st April) operators, e.g. South Eastern Trains to Southeastern (Done ? August 2006)
  • Transfer UK rail photographs uploaded to the English Wikipeida with a free license to Wikimedia Commons - Commons:Category:Railways of Great Britain is the root category for UK railways on Commons (GB/UK naming is currently a mess on Commons)
  • Current usage stats are on the 2002 - 2003 period at each station. These need to be updated to the 2004 - 2005 period to show current trends. However, it is possible to leave to 2002-2003 usage and add the new usage underneath to show how much it has changed if needed.
  • Create a list of all the TOCS in the UK, and their primary operating areas, aswell as maybe the main class of locomotive/unit used.

[edit] Adopt an article

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.

[edit] Usage

Many stations around the UK need to have usage added along with the normal infobox template. The station figures for annual entry\exit for:

It should be noted that these figures are not perfect. Also, "lowexits" should only be applied to figures less than 100,000 unless rounded up to this figure.
