[edit] Introductory case study

While unincorporated, Kensington, California, is subject to the jurisdiction of several special districts [1] (fire, police, school, etc.), some of which are exclusive to Kensington. Others include neighboring communities. Contra Costa County (where Kensington is located) is co-terminous with certain special districts (associated with services the county provides) and there are certain regional special districts (for parks, water, transit, etc.) that encompass multiple counties.

[edit] Goals of this project

  • Systematically identify all special districts in the United States.
  • Create a stub article for each district.
  • Define a standard for linking geographic places (municipalities, counties, states, etc.) and implement it.
  • Encourage Wikipedians to flesh out articles on special districts with history and other relevant facts.

[edit] Current tasks

  • Systematically identify lists of special districts in all US states and territories. Is there a national listing anywhere, or do we have to go state-by-state and county-by-county?
  • Discuss standardized links from municipalities and other geographic places (see talk page).
