[edit] British English

The policy: Articles managed by WikiProject The Beatles should be written in British English.

Notes: This policy specifically overrides the more general Wikipedia guidelines such as "If no such words can be agreed upon, and there is no strong tie to a specific dialect, the dialect of the first significant contributor (not a stub) should be used" (Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#National_varieties_of_English), because it is assumed that (with possible exceptions) all articles about the Beatles have a "strong tie" to the dialect of the United Kingdom.

Exceptions: It is possible that there will be a small number of exceptions to this rule. Examples might include Beatle-related people from countries other than UK, or records not released in the UK. In such cases, the dialect of the article creator may be retained. Exceptions should be noted on the article's talk page and listed in the section below for discussion and "approval".

[edit] Use of lowercase in "the Beatles"

The policy: as per current manuals of style (see talkpage) the name of the band is to be rendered the Beatles. This is an amendment of the previous policy, which was that the initial letter "t" should be capitalised. Editors are requested to edit articles in accordance with the new policy, and must not revert edits to the old style.

[edit] Citations

In accordance with Wikipedia policy, facts and assertions should be attributed to verifiable, reliable sources wherever possible (see WP:V and WP:RS).

The Project's preferred method for this is inline citations using the <ref> tag.

Usage is very simple. Examples:

Citing a book: <ref>Author, Book, ISBN, page number</ref>[1]

Citing a book multiple times: Lewisohn, Mark, "Beatles Book", ISBN 73737373 (2000), Hamyln, London

<ref>Lewisohn, p23</ref>[2]

Reusing a reference:

<ref name="somewebsite">[http://www.web.com/ Some Website]</ref>[3] Second use<ref name="somewebsite"/>[3]

[edit] References

The citations are displayed by placing a <references/> tag at the bottom of the article.

  1. ^ Author, Book, ISBN, page number
  2. ^ Lewisohn, p23
  3. ^ a b Some Website

[edit] Songs

At some point we will need a policy on songs. I would propose that we have a basic Project policy along the lines of: All Beatles songs are considered notable, but the Project chooses to exercise discretion and to merge articles on songs which cannot be turned into serious, interesting encyclopedia articles. kingboyk 19:14, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] About policy

(draft)

WikiProject The Beatles policy is created through discussion and consensus. Policy remains in effect until it is overturned by new consensus or until it is specifically overturned by wider consensus in the Wikipedia community.
