[edit] Articles in Category:The Beatles

These are some of the primary articles of the project.

Article Assessed Status Uses Infobox Comments and Pending tasks Assessed by

The Beatles 4 March 2006 Featured article FA Yes A very comprehensive article, the use of the 4 member photos in verticals is highly effective. Good gateway to other topics. The featured article status is rather old, there may be some improvement and removal of extraneous material possible. Should be reviewed again but lower priority than some of the articles needing lots of work. (I badged it "FA" because it WAS a FA article but I agree with the assignation of "A" for how it is now..) Lar
5 March 2006 A Yes Has been allowed to expand and lose its focus. I doubt it would make featured article status now. 57KB.

History section is growing whilst History of The Beatles lies neglected.

A Secret History 6 March 2006 Merge no Hardly even a stub. Suggest merge to Alistair Taylor.

Merged. --kingboyk 02:55, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Steve
Abbey Road Studios 4 March 2006 B no Needs sections and more background.

Abbey_Road_Studios#Film_scores seems to be excessively large given the size of the article. Might be better if it was split off into a new List article.

Lar

Steve

Allan Williams 8 March 2006 Stub no A short article. It's worth remembering that there is a limit to what can be said about some of these people but - despite Williams disappearing from the radar as quickly as he arrived, (he remains a fixture in Liverpool as a 'colourful character') - I think there must be interesting and useful material out there about his short time with the Beatles. He did write a book after all (which I read, nearly 20 years ago).

Article lacks even basics such as date/place of birth and photo.

Steve
Apple Corps To be assessed as part of Category:Apple Corps
Apple Records To be assessed as part of Category:Apple Records
Jane Asher 8 March 2006 B No As with Astrid Kirchherr below. This needs a photo and possibly some more information (there is information about Jane that is available on her IMDB entry that is not in the article). Also, the Beatles-related song 'A World Without Love' is redlinked, as you can see. Mal
Neil Aspinall 8 March 2006 Stub No No photo, little information, no sources cited, may be biased ("hugely popular"?). Good starting point despite stubbiness, though.
  • Pretty bad stub, agreed. I'll add to "adopt an article" kingboyk 19:23, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
Johnleemk
Automatic double tracking 10 March 2006 A No This article needs work. Its hard for me to say how close to the fringe this article is, considering that the Beatles were instrumental in the development and implementation of the subject. Certainly, I think that a link from within a more pivotal Beatles article is a requirement, if one doesn't exist already, and I'm actually tempted to suggest a merge. Probably best to leave it on its own though: there is plenty of material in it as a free-standing article. The article needs some colour though - in the form of sections and a photo if at all possible.
  • I'm confused, why is this an A-class then? Sounds like maybe a B ?? ++Lar: t/c 00:50, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

The Baroque Beatles Book   not yet assessed unknown
Beatle Barkers 6 March 2006 AfD unknown
  • Outside scope?
  • AFD?

I feel we as a Project don't have to take 'ownership' of this one. It's not a Beatles article, it's an article about an 'amusing' covers album.

I've tagged it with {{importance}}; save for a badly worded IP edit saying it was played at parties in "rural Florida" and once got played on a student radio station, there's no assertion of notability. 0 incoming links from mainspace.

Probably shouldn't be in category and I think it's a strong AFD candidate too (but I haven't Googled for it yet; waiting for others' comments first).

Update 22 Mar 06, result of AfD was keep. Suppose we have to take it under our wing? If so, what to do? It's a start class article at best. ++Lar: t/c 17:38, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

We might need a new category to put the Beatles-related stuff into (see discussion below at Beatlemania (musical)). For now, just regrade it as stub or start class or I guess. --kingboyk 18:10, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Steve
Beatle haircut 9 March 2006 Merge No This article includes a photo (though possibly not the best choice?) and includes a lot of information for such a short article. It is an excellent 'stub', but I think it should be merged into an article about Beatles phenomena
  • 2nd opinion: I think this one is arguably best retained as is. --kingboyk 04:59, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
Mal
Beatlemania 14 March 2006 Merge No I first looked at this yesterday and didn't really know what to say. Of course Beatlemania is an important concept (although in a way it's just a word, a dictdef if you will). Strip out the list of chart performances and the section on a musical of the same name (which needs its own article, or none at all if not notable) and all we're left with is a couple of paragraphs. I've therefore added this to the new section at the bottom - articles which are about the general history of the Beatles, and which together form multiple merge candidates. Second opinions invited. Steve
Beatlemania (musical) 14 March 2006 Start no Maybe outside project scope, and is another article which belongs in a new subcategory (Category:The Beatles related topics? Category:Beatlecruft?). Decent start, beyond a stub, needs a cast photo or some other picture to brighten it up. Steve
The Beatles Anthology 14 March 2006 B no This feels like it should be 3 articles, or maybe 2, since there are DVDs and two different albums covered by the article. Somewhat unstructured but a lot of material there. Needs album and dvd covers

2nd opinion: The albums already have their own articles. I think this should be retained as an overview page but cleaned up. We can use the "main article" thing to point people to the articles on the albums. I'd favour one strong article (i.e. this one, expanded) on the TV series, DVDs and books. Can always be split out later if gets too large. Definitely needs a splash of colour. --kingboyk 05:08, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Lar
The Beatles' London 12 March 2006 B no A lot of interesting facts. But they're just scattered about with only minimal sorting, and no citations at all. I waffled between B and Start class, actually Lar
Beatles Ltd. 9 March 2006 Merge Yes This article definately merits merging with another article. Suggestions would be Brian Epstein, The Beatles, History of the Beatles, Apple Corps, or a new article denoting managerial aspects of the group and/or related companies.

Merged --kingboyk 05:23, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Mal
The Beatles record sales, worldwide charts 9 March 2006 Merge or Delete Yes This article has a lot of information in it. Much of the information is highly notable. To that end, I think it should be merged into a new article, for example Beatles trivia (see Pink Floyd trivia), an article about the success of the Beatles, or into an existing article. Mal
Beatlesque 14 March 2006 Merge no Another horrible article and like Beatlemania I'm slightly at a loss as to what to suggest. It's part dictdef, part analysis of a real, enyclopedic concept, and part (muchly) fan cruft. Needs to be transwikied, trimmed, or merged. I think removing the cruft and merging the encyclopedic stuff somewhere might be best. Second opinions invited. A major problem with this article is that it seems to have degenerated into a list of various editors' remotely-Beatleesque favourite bands. Steve
Pete Best 8 March 2006 B Yes This article is an essential part of The Beatles project, but it could perhaps benefit from copyediting, some sources citing and perhaps a better picture or infobox at the top. Q: Was Best a member of The Silver Beetles?
  • Silver Beetles was just a shortlived name for the same band. I don't see that it matters a great deal. I agree with Mal's rating but it's at the upper end of B class. This is one of the better "peripheral" Beatles articles we've evaluated so far. It's nowhere near A class, but it's a very decent start. kingboyk
Mal
Birth of the Beatles 9 March 2006 B No The article is basic, and will require some work to bring it up to standard. Possible NPOV problem with some of the content. Needs a photo. No sources or sections. I think this article is on the very fringe of scope, and should be included possibly in a category of independent films/documentaries about The Beatles. Mal
The Bootleg Beatles 16 March 2006 B No Needs a picture and a spring clean, but I'm not sure there's much more the article needs to say? Weak B-Class. Steve
The Beatles bootlegs 14 March 2006 Start No A lot of content but tagged for cleanup. Of course this is one of our merge targets. It was an unreleased bootleg song which landed us with all this work, remember? Article could use the attention of an expert. Steve
The Beatles' influence on popular culture 16 March 2006 Start No Start class, or merge. Has a NPOV tag. Low grade unloved article. Steve
The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit 16 March 2006 Start Yes A good start. Has infobox and picture but not text. Steve
The Buggs   not yet assessed unknown

Hunter Davies 9 March 2006 Stub No This article is most definately a stub, and needs a lot of work. A photo of a book cover perhaps, and a change in Beatles categorisation (Beatles biographers?). It has a good selection of works section, complete with ISBNs. Mal
Day by Day (music)   Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles/Article Classification/Unknown unknown
The Decca audition 9 March 2006 Merge No This article has templates plastered all over it suggesting it needs cleaned up etc! It certainly needs a lot of work: sources, sections, possibly a photo of the old Decca logo of the time. It needs merged in any case, probably with History of The Beatles. Mal
The Beatles discography 6 March 2006 A No Comprehensive list with a long introduction/overview. Needs a little tidying and towards the bottom some more pictures would add some welcome colour. I propose this to be our first featured list candidate. Steve

[edit] E (Comments migrated by Mal 05:07, 22 August 2006 (UTC))

Brian Epstein 9 March 2006 A No I would place this article at the lower end of A-class. It needs sections, sources & citations, another photo (or infobox) at the top, copyediting and an expansion of the first paragraph to create a better introduction. As an extra comment here, I'd like to suggest that Epstein's interest in John Lennon, from a sexual perspective, may well have been pivotal in his motivation to launch the band, as documented in a very comprehensive biography I read many years ago. Of course, a source for that would need to be cited, and the fact carefully edited to avoid any possibility of offence to any sexuality. Mal
Mal Evans 5 April 2006 Start No A decent article for this member of the Beatles' inner circle, but needs a good polish: a photo, sections, and references. Steve
Exy 5 April 2006 Stub No A stub, possible merge candidate. Talk page says the article creator actually intended it for Wiktionary! We need to document the Beatles' vitally important Hamburg residencies, but I don't think this article is too great on its own. A photo of the Exys may be too much for ask for. Steve

Fifth Beatle   Start No This is actually somewhere between start class and B-class. There's a decent bit of content, but only one source. The lead is practically non-existent, and half the article is in list form. Johnleemk

The Grey Video -- this has been moved to the bootlegs category 12 Mar 2006 Merge Yes I am not totally convinced this belongs here but it does seem to fit category:The Beatles bootlegs I guess. The article seems relatively poorly structured although I can't say quite why. There is a pending proposal to merge it with The Grey Album which has more info on the legal controversy and ramifications. I think the merge might be controversial, but it seems the way to go. I wish it wasn't in our area at all! Rather it was someone else's problem... Smile. Need to check if Grey Album is in the album list, I guess... Lar
12 Mar 2006 I think it's one that belongs in the category but which is outside our project's scope for management, personally. Good album though. Steve

[edit] H (Comments migrated by Mal 05:21, 22 August 2006 (UTC))

George Harrison 2 April 2006 A Yes There is no official "References" section, and few, if any, in-line references, but the article is very well-rounded. It covers George's entire life: early life, life with the Beatles, and life by decades after that. It has a few pictures, mostly of him, but a few more wouldn't hurt. (Maybe some on the left side of the page?) Gordon
History of The Beatles 5 April 2006 Merge No I'm gonna stick my neck on the line and say this article is crap. It's an essay not an article, it has no photos, it repeats a lot from other articles, and it's been neglected. Our big project - and it's gonna be a task and a half - is to look at this and similar forkish articles and merge them back into the main article or (because of probable size issues) re-fork from The Beatles, seriously trimming the content in The Beatles to avoid this pointless overlap.

I'm certainly not proposing an AFD-style deletion of the article, but whether The Beatles' history section gets forked for a second time to here (with any good bits from History of The Beatles retained) or whether History of The Beatles gets replaced with a redirect must be up for discussion (see Wikipedia:WikiProject_The_Beatles/Article_Classification#The_big_ones). Note: Article was nominated for deletion in 2004 and the same issues remain. The difference is we're now here and we're gonna do something about it! :-)

John Lennon 9 March 2006 A Yes Pretty good article (it ought to be, it's one of the top 1/2 dozen articles of the project) but could use a fair bit of cleanup (and controversy/weaselword removal) to take it to FA. I don't think this should be a focus till more is done on others, though. Lar
Lennon-McCartney   Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles/Article Classification/Unknown unknown
Richard Lester 23 March 2006 B no Needs bio infobox and picture, which hold it back from "A". The reader is left with the sense that this is an important person but overall, not THAT important. (not Stanley Kubrick, for example) Is that correct? If so the level of detail is about right at the current depth level of Wikipedia. Lar
Mark Lewisohn 24 March 2006 Stub no Although it has a picture, this is still a stub in my view, not too much info there, and it is stub tagged... needs an infobox bio too Lar

Paul Is Dead 10 March 2006 A No This is an excellent, if frivolous, article, brimming full with information. The drawback of this is that the TOC is quite long. I would suggest the merging of many of the sections in order to cut down on the TOC size. While the subject itself I would say is notable, it wouldn't be notable enough to warrant splitting any of the sections. It needs some tweaking, but not much, to gain FA status.

Star-Club 16 Mar 2006 B No Covers the basics. Needs a photo. Steve
Ringo Starr 14 Mar 2006 B Yes OK, I am going out on a limb here, and this may get me some flamage. I gave this a B!!! It's a big long article, but in my view the initial part is just a bit too breathless. Lots of subjective evaluation of his abilities, and no cites. The tail of the article is a bit disorganised too. For one of our top 10 (top 5??) articles, it can be better, lots better. Flame away. Lar
7 April 2006 I agree with Lar's assessment and would like to emphasise that there seems to be a lot of subjective uncited opinion in this article. I'm sure we can find written opinion on Ringo's qualities and/or deficiecies as a drummer, his evolution etc., without having to rely on editorial opinion. Steve

Alistair Taylor 6 March 2006 Stub no Even with A Secret History now merged in, it's a stub. Have added it to the adopt an article list. Steve
Tittenhurst Park 14 Mar 2006 Start N/A Has a few nuggets, but needs a map, dates for Ringo's tenure etc. The lead sentence talks about John but neglects to mention Ringo who owned it for far longer. Some photos would help too. Lar

[edit] V

Ivan Vaughan 16 March 2005 Stub No Nasty stub. Reads like a tribute piece, needs sources. Needs a photo. If we have articles on the individual Quarrymen, this article should be moved to Category:The Quarrymen. Steve
Klaus Voormann 05 March 2005 B no (needs bio box) A good article. Clearly shows significance and influence. Could stand some subsectioning. A picture or artwork sample would be great. (would an album cover be allowed under fair use?) Lar
6 March 2006 Start No Lacking a discography. Needs sections. Seriously needs some photos because - as George Harrison said about Klaus - everybody's heard about him but most people haven't seen him. Could use some examples of his artwork (e.g. Revolver and Anthology covers, some of his other art, it would be fair use I think). Needs expansion - there's lots of factoids and no real narrative.

Klaus Voorman is a major figure in the Beatles history - he's touched their lives for nigh on 40 years - and he deserves a strong article, much stronger than this.

Beatles '65 9 March 2006 B Yes The single para of info has a strong POV (true though it may be) and not a lot of discussion as to WHY Capitol did what they did (which would need sourcing if it was added). Still, it has an info box which raises it above Start class anyway. Lar
The Beatles 1962-1966 10 March 2006 B Yes This article is sparse, but I fail to see how much more could be added to the text of a cimpilation album such as this. Certainly, as far as I'm aware, these two albums were probably responsible to some degree for introducing many people of Generation X to the Beatles, and they are a reasonably good cross-section of Beatles songs - particularly their hits. This article will probably never reach FA status.
  • As with other compilations, agreed that there's a limit to what can be said. Some quotations from reviews and commentary on historical perspective is possible though. I think a lot of people came to the Beatles via Red and Blue. I know I did. I'll add these two to the adopt an article list. --kingboyk 06:15, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Also, perhaps more references (only 4 for a rather long article)

I agree with El Slameron (who rated it B). It does however have the GA badge, so I've changed the rating. It's rather high on red links and the total absence of footnotes doesn't suggest an FAC to me just yet. The GA badge is a very good start though. --kingboyk 20:22, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
