[edit] Title

WikiProject on Syracuse, New York

[edit] Scope

There are over 1000 articles that link to Syracuse, New York alone. New Syracuse-related articles are constantly being created, often by good-intentioned but inexperienced editors who violate copyright, or simply violate NPOV and style guidelines. As the Syracuse scope goes far beyond the main article, a greater level of coordination than what can be achieved on one talk page is required.

For starters, the project will focus on articles directly relating to Syracuse (as in locations, buildings, parks, etc. that are in the city proper), as well as the towns (and their respective villages) that share a border with the city.

[edit] Structure

An issue facing the project is Category:Greater Syracuse, New York vs. Category:Onondaga County, New York. Right now Greater Syracuse is in the Onondaga County category, but Greater Syracuse arguably extends beyond Onondaga County... Tough situation. In any case, make sure to add [[Category:Greater Syracuse, New York]] to all Syracuse-related articles, unless there is a more specific subcategory, including:

Not arguably. The Syracuse SMSA includes the western half of Madison County and all of Oswego County. Also, under the heading of Sports, I may be able to come up with some info on the Post-Standard Basketball League of the 1920's and 1930's. A dozen or so major papers across the state sponsored leagues in their area. There was a structure for a state championship tournament between league champions. Split Rock, which was a good deal larger then due to the munitions factory, had a team. East Syracuse's and Minoa's teams were statewide powerhouses in the late 20's and early 30's, due largely to Paul Everett in East Syracuse and Hubie Costello (father of Larry) in Minoa. I still have one of East Syracuse's trophies around here somewhere. My father was the starting center and – remember this was an all White league eighty years ago – was one of the three or four tallest guys in the state at 6'3". ~~Clarkpark~~

As mentioned elsewhere, the metropolitan area extends into Cayuga County as well--and into Cortland County. The artificial political jurisdictions create problems of redundancy and difficulty of access--I didn't even know there WAS a "Greater Syracuse" article, until reading this discussion. I'm pondering now whether what I've been done in "Onondaga County" belongs merely there, or needs to be replicated in "Greater Syracuse." Phmalo 18:05, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Goals

  1. Ensure that all Syracuse-related articles at least meet basic WP:Style guidelines, are categorized correctly and wikilinked with detail, including its neighborhood if it is located in Syracuse.
  2. Work on completing the neighborhoods.
  3. Continually improve the quality of the better articles so they can reach Good Article status one day.

[edit] Projects

  • Photography: Replace bad-quality, dismal-looking, and questionable-copyright-status photos with better free ones.
    • A good third-party source is Flickr. Here's the Syracuse Creative Commons Search String
    • If anyone has any requests, just let me know. I am rather busy at the moment, but I am trying to get around and get some decent shots. -- Gizzakk 19:03, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
    • Same for me. Though I am not formall part of the project, I live near Liverpool High School and do photography, so I can also get some good shots. Contact me through my talk page -- Blown-Upp

[edit] Tasks

  • Continuous: Keep Syracuse, New York as compact as possible, moving as much details into sub-articles as is reasonable.
  • Continuous: Keep all Syracuse-related articles properly categorized.
  • Continuous: Ensure that all links going to the central city article are disambiguated, especially to ensure that links to Syracuse aren't instead meant to go to Syracuse University or Syracuse, Italy.
  • Plan and develop Portal:Syracuse, New York (See Portal:Philadelphia for an example).
  • Identify and list all Syracuse-related infoboxes and navigational templates on a subpage, and consider the development of new ones.
  • Add an assessment scale.

There is just the main infobox template currently in use in the main article. We could use some help creating a template for the "sudo-template" currently in use in some neighborhood articles.
