Wikipedia:WikiProject Soil
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to soil. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list there.

[edit] News
- December 20, 2006 - In an IUSS alert, emailed to 12,000 people, the International Union of Soil Sciences encourages members to contribute to Wikipedia, and alerts readers to be aware of this project.
- December 11, 2006 - George Demas, created by new Wikipedian User:Jimjet, is proposed for deletion. Part of the issue is that the article reads like a resume. Project members are encouraged to take the time to help retool any peacock and weasel wording, or otherwise getting involved to improve this article.
- December 3, 2006 - 400th project article: Narragansett (soil).
- December 2, 2006 - Worklist retooling begins.
[edit] Getting the word out
- Project banners placed on article talk pages:
- The original banner per Wikipedia:Template_messages/Talk_namespace#WikiProject_notices for article talk page placement:
{{WikiProjectNotice|Soil}}
-
- A replacement project banner has since been prepared:
{{Soil}}
-
- The replacement banner generates placement within an article assessment category structure: Category:Soil articles by quality.
- For now most articles will be unassessed. See here for assessments.
- Previous editors of soils articles can be contacted on their user talk pages.
- Participants can put either {{participant|Soil}} or simply [[Category:WikiProject Soil participants|YourNameHere]] on their userpage.
[edit] Scope
The purpose of WikiProject Soil is to improve content within the Category:Soil science and associated subcategories. Project collaborators monitor articles, upload images, add missing articles, improve current articles and achieve good and featured article status for some articles.
[edit] Parentage
The parents of this WikiProject are Portal:Earth sciences and WikiProject Science.
Note that both WikiProject Ecology and WikiProject Ecoregions have some soil articles identified as part of that project.

[edit] Related Collaborations
Wikipedia:WikiProject Ecology/to do:
Create a template to link soil types, and write articles on each soil type (e.g. FAO soil classification)
Wikipedia:WikiProject Ecoregions#Soils:
We could use the FAO classification, as it is a worldwide one, widely accepted and translated in many languages.
http://www.fao.org/ag/agl/agll/wrb/wrbmaps/htm/soilres.htm
- Issue 1 : the main map is "fair use" : could we ask for it, might we just put a link to it ?
- Issue 2 : the main map is not precise enough 1:5000000, to easily find references of soil types for each ecoregion. There is another more precise map.

[edit] Definitions and Structure
- Soil as in the earthy material on surface of the land that is subjected to weathering and other soil forming factors.
- Soil science as in the study of the pedosphere.
- The two main branches of soil science are pedology and edaphology.
- Pedology deals with soil in its natural setting and includes soil morphology and soil classification.
- Edaphology deals with soil as it affects people, plants and animals and includes agricultural soil science and environmental soil science.
- The categorical sub fields of soil science are soil chemistry, soil physics, soil biology and soil scientists
- The two main branches of soil science are pedology and edaphology.

[edit] Goals
The goal of this project is the following:
- Ensure all the articles under the scope of this project are written to a high quality.
- Organise all the articles into appropriate categories.
- Place all categories in the correct hierarchy.
- Create user friendly linkages and navigation.
[edit] Project
- Assess and prepare {{WPCD}} articles for publication.
- Collaborate on soil article tasks identified at WikiProject Ecology and WikiProject Ecoregions .
Move category structure and discussion from Category talk:Soil science to project page and project talk page.completed 02:08, 9 June 2006 (UTC)- Check for articles that need {{expert}} input.
- Check for articles that can be {{merged}}.
- Check for articles that need to be rewritten for {{neutrality}}
[edit] Article assessment
See Wikipedia:WikiProject Soil/Worklist for WikiProject soil article assessments.
Two example assessments:
Discuss on WP Soil talk page | |||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
WPCD Article | Assessment | Back Links | Importance | Grade | Tags | Comments and Pending Tasks | Assessed by |
Soil | September 17, 2006 | <1,500 | Top | A-Class | None | From FAC: A notable ommission is a section on the formation of soil (which I would put prior to the classification of soils); there is some information on this in soil in nature, but it gets mixed up with too much other stuff there. Something like this is what I would have expected. Comment by Peta | Paleorthid |
Soil science | June 9, 2006 | <250 | Top | Start | None | Stub-like qualities abound. Needs cite.php references, image, wikify and cleanup. Restructure per soil science category structure and soils article. Move history to new article: History of Soil Science | Paleorthid |
[edit] Articles that need collaboration
In progress. I understand that these could be generated by bot, which I expect to figure out as the project develops. Currently these lists are being prepared manually.
[edit] Wikipedia-CD (WPCD)
Sixteen (16) articles are candidates for inclusion in the next version of Wikipedia CD Selection. This is indicated by {{WPCD}} added on the article's talk page. A current assessment indicates that only one of the sixteen articles article, soil profile, has reached publication quality. The two most important candidate articles, soil, and soil science, need improvement. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Soil/Worklist for article assessments.
[edit] Wikipedia 0.5
Articles are being evaluated for inclusion in an initial test release (called Version 0.5) as part of the overall project of producing a fixed version of Wikipedia. The article on soil was evaluated September 15, 2006.
[edit] Wikipedia 1.0
WikiProject Soil articles may be nominated for consideration by the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team as Core Topics, the most important articles any encyclopedia should have. Regardless of WP Soil involvement, please visit the project's listing to see the articles' assessments and to help improve these articles as we push to 1.0. WikiProject Soil needs to prepare an assessment of these articles. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Soil/Worklist for WikiProject soil article assessments.
[edit] Articles to be merged
See Wikipedia:WikiProject Soil/Merge for articles that are suggested for merging. They have been tagged with {{merge}}
[edit] Tasks
- Monitor all categorical soils articles for for vandalism and substandard edits (for example Special:Recentchangeslinked/Category:Soil science
- Identify pages that need attention.
- Upload PD soils images from USDA, USGS to Commons:Category:Soil
- Develop a userbox for project participants.
[edit] Pages needing attention
In progress. I perceive that these could be generated by bot, which I expect to figure out as the project develops. Currently this list is being prepared manually by WikiProject Soil collaboarators.
[edit] Articles needed
See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Soil/Needed for Soil Project articles that need to be created.
[edit] Stubs
See Cat:Soil science stubs for Soil Project articles that are too short to be genuinely useful.
[edit] Articles that may require cleanup
Articles that may require general cleanup have been tagged {{cleanup}}.
[edit] Articles that provide insufficient context
The introductions to these article provide insufficient context for those unfamiliar with the subject matter and have been tagged {{context}}.
[edit] Articles lacking sources
See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Soil/Articles_lacking_sources for articles lacking sources. They have been tagged {{references}}.
[edit] Articles with dead external links
Dead links are unwanted, and should be fixed on a regular basis. You can either try to find the current location of the document using a Google inurl search, or use the {{dlw}} or {{dlw-inline}} templates to point to the Internet Archive version of the document, like this: {{dlw|dead URL|caption}}, e.g.: {{dlw|http://free.oszoo.org/|OS Zoo webpage}}. For dead links inside paragraphs, use {{dlw-inline|url=dead URL|title=caption}}, which will not disturb the flow of text as much. Please do not simply remove every dead link; they often contain valuable information.
Formerly broken links which need reintegration:
- Soil liquefaction, How quicksand forms Fixed: Need to put link back in where it fits
[edit] Articles that need expansion
Articles that need expansion have been tagged {{expand}}.
[edit] Articles with sections that need expansion
Articles with sections that need expansion. They have been tagged {{sectstub}}.
