[edit] Scope

The focus of this WikiProject is relatively narrow: it aims to improve and expand Wikipedia's coverage of castles in Scotland, with the ultimate goal of giving a full and detailed description of every castle in Scotland, accompanied with (where possible):

  • Location map
  • Photographs (external and internal)
  • Floor plans
  • History

Discussion is ongoing on the talk page as to what should be included in the definition of 'castle', but certainly any defensive building from the 12th to the 16th century comes within the scope of this project.

The initial focus is on the list of red links on the Castles in Scotland page, and the short articles in the Category:Scotland castle stubs. The Progress Page has lists of red links, stub articles, and articles needing photos.

An improved Castles in Scotland page has also been suggested as an aim for the project, giving more of an overview of the subject rather than a simple list.

[edit] Why?

Because I love Scottish Castles! A few of the well-known ones have a page already, but each has a different quantity of information and all are laid out differently. Since there are over 3000 of them, I feel a systematic approach is required to best record the available information.

[edit] Structure and Format

[edit] Article layout

No 'template' article has been identified as an ideal castle article, however, the following articles have been noted as a 'shortlist', for the reasons stated:

  • 6 - Muchalls Castle - Thorough balanced content with photos
  • 5 - Balmoral Castle - Minimum desirable article length, reasonable text/image balance.
  • 4 - Foulis Castle - Although there is no real structure to this article, there is a good range and layout of pictures.
  • 3 - Edzell Castle - Good, balanced content.
  • 2 - Kellie Castle - Good visual appeal, structure and content.
  • 1 - Crathes Castle - Good structure and headings.

The following typical article structure has been suggested as a guideline for any new Scottish castle articles:

  • Introductory paragraph, including location
  • History, divided into 'early' and 'later' or whatever suits
  • The Castle Today - ie description of the state of the place, features etc
  • Gardens - if appropriate
  • Interior - if appropriate
  • Other information specific to any site - ie use in a film etc.

It should be noted that this is a guide only, as each castle is different and will require a slightly different approach.

[edit] Images

It has been agreed that castle articles should contain good images of both exteriors, interiors and details of the castles. Obviously these depend on actual visits, so an external link to a site with pictures is a good idea when no free images are available.

Floor plans have been suggested as a possibility. If you have access to these, or the ability to draw them up, these would certainly be welcome, although not a necessity.

A location map based on the Scotland Infobox map should be included, ideally with a linked grid reference. See the example at Threave Castle. The map image should be placed lower on the page than images of the castle itself.

[edit] Infobox

It has been suggested that an infobox be included on Scottish Castle articles, although the form of this has not been decided. Discussion is ongoing on the talk page.
