This new Mesoamerican category scheme is proposed (once completed) to replace/modify the existing category scheme noted in the "existing" section below.
Guidelines and conventions for the categorisation of Mesoamerica-related articles are outlined at the corresponding talk page, please refer to these when considering new or amended categories. New proposals and additions may be discussed there also.
Proposed new categories are given below (in boldface), followed by their immediate subcategories. Note that categories and subcategories may appear more than once if they have more than one parent category.
This scheme is under development.

A raw-dump listing of categories (as of 3 June 2006) currently under the overall parent category, Mesoamerica, generated with the assistance of the Catscan tool. They are grouped under their head categories, however more detailed parent-child relationships are not shown.
As can be seen, there is a lot of work to be done on the category schema- rationalising, naming standardisation, identifying missing categories (those which do not exist but should, and those which exist but do not parent back to Cat:Mesoamerica), and defining a sensible and consistent hierarchy in which thematically-related articles at each level of detail can be grouped together.
