[edit] Naming Convention

The contents of each article in this project should reside in Iowa Highway XXX, with XXX being the route number (no leading zeros); also, Iowa State Highway XXX and Iowa-XXX and IA-XXX and Highway XXX (Iowa) should redirect to the article as well. (see WP:USSH)

[edit] Structure

[edit] Infobox

Articles should use Template:Infobox road with all known info supplied. See #Infoboxes below.

[edit] Main Section

Untitled section that describes the route. It might be helpful for formatting to use TOCleft at the top of this section to display the table of contents on the top left, followed by the main description of the route. Depending on the route this section may just name the direction (E/W or N/S) and termination points, or may go into considerable detail. However, the majority of detail, such as progress by town or county, should be reserved for the next section.

[edit] Route Description

This section is for describing the route itself and its progression across the state. Regardless of the route's length, progression should be described from south to north, west to east.

[edit] Communities along the route

List of communities, which can range from small hamlets to large cities, along the route. Depending on the length of the route this may include only major communities, or just the few hamlets the route passes through.

[edit] History

Any historical information known about the route should be noted.

[edit] Miscellanea

Any trivia or facts about a route (any interesting information that doesn't belong in the History section) should be placed in this section.

[edit] Major intersections or Exit list

The contents of this section may vary by route. Refer to the table below for the appropriate section header and further instructions.

Route composition Section header title What should be here
All grade-separated interchanges; no at-grade intersections Exit list An exit list designed in accordance with the exit list guide
Mixture of grade-separated interchanges and at-grade intersections Major intersections or Exit list Depending on the route in question, either a junction table or a "combo" exit list featuring exits and intersections can be used.
All at-grade intersections; no grade-separated interchanges Major intersections A junction table for at-grade intersections as specified in the "Junction table" section below

[edit] Templates

The Infobox to use for this project is the Template:Infobox road template.

This is the basic syntax you need to get a complete routebox on the article page, just place this before any other text and fill in the variables.

Iowa Highway 32
Northwest Arterial
Length: 5.1 mi[1] (8.21 km)
South end: US 20 west of Dubuque
North end: US 52/IA 3 NW of Dubuque
Iowa State Highways
< IA 31 IA 33 >

For the above paramaters here's what you should fill in:

  • state: This should be IA
  • type: This should be IOWA which is what Iowa prefaces their route names with, i.e. IOWA-50
  • route: This is the number of the route the article is about
  • alternate_name: if the route is assigned an additional name, include it here.
  • map: This is the Image Wiki for the map. This function is not used as of yet on Iowa articles as no maps have been made.
  • length_mi: This is the length of the route in miles. If you specifiy beyond integers (i.e. add a decimal value) you will need to set the following paramater, length_round
  • length_round: If your value for length_mi is a whole number, you can omit this. Otherwise it needs to be set to the decimal precision of the length_mi paramater.
  • length_ref: To do what a good article writer should, provide your reference for the length of the route using standard
  • established: This is the date the route was commissioned
  • direction_a: This should be either south or west to keep in accordance with the U.S. Roads parent project, which lists termini and junctions in progression travelling from West to East and South to North.
  • starting_terminus: This is where the route begins and is either at the southern terminus or western terminus.
  • junction: Any major junctions along the route should be listed here. If more than one is listed, use a <br> to break the lines
    • Only major junctions go into the Interstate routebox... these would be Interstates, U.S. Highways and and other major state highways/roads. Otherwise the routebox becomes way too big.
    • For multiple highways near a city either:
      1. List them together on the same line by city OR
      2. Omit minor highway junctions (preferred)
    • Of course the terminii would always be there.
    • If any routebox has over 10 or so junctions, then some of the junctions need to be removed.
    • The only time a county route would be mentioned is if it is a terminus (there are at least three instances of that so far).
  • direction_b: The opposite of direction_a
  • ending_terminus: where the route ends, in accordance with the guidelines set forth with starting_terminus
  • previous_type: This is the type of route that preceeds the current one in the system. The value for this is usually: Interstate, US, or IOWA for Interstates, U.S. Routes and other Iowa Highways, respectively.
  • previous_route: The number of the route preceding this one
  • next_type: Same as previous_type but for the route following this one
  • next_route: The number of the route succeeding this one

Important notes regarding the routebox: For the previous and next route types, remember to list them in order of priority. If you do an infobox for IOWA-28, the following route would be I-29 not IOWA-29. IOWA-29 would succeed I-29 as there is no U.S. 29 in Iowa. The precedence is as follows: U.S. Interstate, U.S. Route, Iowa Highway.

So, by completing the infobox as follows, you'll get a routebox like the one to the right.

U.S. 218 shield for Iowa State Highways (Image:US 218 (IA).svg)
U.S. 218 shield for Iowa State Highways (Image:US 218 (IA).svg)

3digit U.S. Routes use the same shield size as 2-digit Routes in Iowa and use B-type highway font. Therefore, the 3d routes in Iowa, US 151 and US 218 would have shields as shown at right:

The routes that fall into this situation are:

Articles with such names as U.S. Route XX in Iowa or Interstate XX in Iowa exist to free up space on their respective main articles. These should follow the structures specified by their respective WikiProjects. Interstates and U.S Routes have their own routeboxes Infobox Interstate and . Parent routes that cross state boundaries (such as I-90 must use these routeboxes. Articles for the details of the highways in Iowa can use Infobox road with the parameters specified above, instead of the type being "IA", for 2-digit U.S. Routes, use "US" for the type, for 3-digit U.S. Routes, use "3dUS" for the type - and for interstates - use "Interstate." 2 of the 3di routes I-235, I-380 may also fall into this category. There are a few things that must be done for each route type which are explained in the Interstate Routebox instructions and the U.S. Routes Routebox instructions.

[edit] Browse Template

If a route is decommissioned, it still needs a browse box at the bottom of the article.

start srbox

end box

will create something like

Browse numbered routes
< IA 3 IA IA 5 >

Replace previous and next type with "US" or "Interstate" if and only if the previous or next route is not a Iowa state highway. If the previous or next route is a U.S. Route, _type=US if it is an interstate, type=Interstate

This box should only be placed on pages that do not have an infobox, or are an article for a Interstate or U.S. Route in the Iowa Highway system. On pages where a browse box already exists, you can omit the start and end templates, and just insert the wi browse, keeping the list in alphabetical order. For an example, see the browse box at U.S. Route 1 at the bottom of the article.

[edit] Reference entry

Use for referencing the Iowa highways page by route number.

gives you Jason Hancock. Highway 13. Iowa Highways. Retrieved on February 4, 2007.

  • "lowrg" is the low end of the subpage to reference - 10, 20, 30, etc.
  • "lowrg" is the low end of the subpage to reference - 10, 20, 30, etc.
  • "num" is the highway number to reference
  • "m_iter" - when set will indicate that the highway has more than once occurrence important for proper linking
  • "access_date" - the date the information was last accessed

place this within a set of tags and make sure to include the correct reference section

NOTE: This template must be subst'd. any instances of transclusion will be removed. also - the template will not properly subst into an infobox due to magic words - consider using a sandbox to generate the code and pasting it into the infobox code.

[edit] Junction table

The junction table, to be located in "Major intersections", is for listing all of the intersections, both actual junctions and over/underpasses, that this route has with state routes, U.S. routes, Interstates and, optionally, county routes.

This is the basic syntax you need to get a complete junction table for routes that only has at-grade intersections. Just copy and paste the code below into the "Major intersections" section:

Jcttop

Jctbtm

...and fill in the variables! For more entries, use this:

For the above parameters, here's what you should fill in:

  • state: the state the intersection is at, do not use if cspan or lspan is specified for the row
  • county: name of the county without wiki markup - the county is automatically linked by the template
  • cspan: number of rows the county spans - if value=1, omit this parameter
  • location: name of the location without wiki markup - the location is automatically linked by the template
  • lspan: number of rows the location spans - if value=1, omit this parameter
  • area: (optional for use with location) used to disambiguate between town, city, village, etc.
  • ctdab: (optional for use with location) further disambiguation by county (Brighton in New York is an example where this tag would be used)
  • location_special: (replaces location) location where the junction is located - use for custom entries only. Wiki markup is required.
  • type: noaccess, mplex (for concurrency), decomd (for decommissioned), unbuilt, closed
  • mile: milepost of the junction. If unknown, leave blank.
  • road: road that the article route intersects at this junction. To generate the proper coding, use:
    • State: SR num (refer to naming conventions)
    • US: US num
    • Interstate: I-num.
  • street: (optional for use with location) Used to break up monotony in sections where the route has the same town name six or more times over (see NY 33 for an example of appropriate usage).
  • notes: any notes regarding that junction.

Any parameter which is empty can be omitted.
