Wikipedia:WikiProject Hall of Fame
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With the incredible speed by which the encyclopedia is growing, the growing diversity of the editing community and the different challenges faced by associations of editors, it is important to find a way in which the special contributions of editors can be celebrated by everyone, without distinction or reservation. The efforts of people who've believed in this project's viability and given much of their precious time and energy, especially without the prospect of renumeration or reward, deserve to be remembered over the years and serve as an example for the different generations of editors. There are and have been many editors who are often role models for others and have done some important work that has positively benefited the contributors who've joined after them.

[edit] What the Hall of Fame is
The Hall of Fame encompasses Wikipedians across the diverse spectrum of gender, nationalities, ethnicities, religions and other distinctions. It gives equal weightage and makes no distinctions between users, administrators, Wikipedia:Bureaucrats, the board of trustees or any other office-holders. The Hall of Fame is a celebration of what Wikipedia is and what it has become. It is a chance for the editing community to relax, enjoy themselves and look back at their time here with a degree of satisfaction.
[edit] Electoral process
Ostensibly, the electoral process for induction must be different than those held for office-holders such as the Wikipedia:Arbitration committee, Wikipedia:Requests for adminship, etc. While there can never be a guarantee, ideally this process should be clear of any prejudice, conflagration between editors and residual ill-will.
[edit] Basic criteria for induction
While it is in the spirit of this endeavor to not set specific criteria for inductees, some basic principles obviously define the ideal inductee to the hall of fame. The editors need not be the writers of featured articles, pictures, lists, portals, the leaders of wikiprojects or the writers of accepted policies. More emphasis is to be given to the way editors treat their colleagues and live up to Wikipedia's spirit and goals in special, different ways.
The Hall of Fame seeks to honor those individual editors who have:
- Given a significant amount of personal time to help grow the project, enrich the content and/or help solve some of the problems it faces.
- Given a commitment that has not reduced significantly over a period of time. Inductees need to be users who've shown a lasting confidence and basic belief in the mission of this project.
- Made special contributions and an impact that cannot be sufficiently celebrated by barnstars and deserve to be marked in some permanent way.
- Built a special (positive) place in the hearts and minds of his or her fellow contributors.
The Hall of Fame will not be composed based on:
- The "resume" of individual editors — it doesn't matter how many offices, memberships an editor holds, or how many barnstars one has been awarded over time.
- The visibility of individuals, as opposed to the level of real contribution made by individual editors.
