Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to fungi. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list there.

[edit] Title

WikiProject on fungi

[edit] Scope

This WikiProject aims primarily to describe all fungi, that is, all species belonging to the kingdom Fungi. This project is not limited to species descriptions and taxonomy; all important aspects of fungal biology are covered by this project. Additionally, the history of the science of mycology and biographies of mycologists are also part of this project.

[edit] Parentage

This WikiProject is an offshoot of WikiProject Tree of Life

[edit] Similar WikiProjects

This project was largely modeled after Wikiproject Plants and follows many of the same guidelines, modified to the unique needs of describing fungi and mycology.

Some pages on psychoactive genera and species have been created as part of Wikiproject Psychedelics, Dissociatives and Deliriants

Creation and maintenance of biographies of mycologists has some overlap with Wikiproject Biography.

[edit] Participants

  • Peter G. Werner (initiator) - taxonomy of homobasidiomycetes, also ethnomycology; Psilocybe is a particular interest.
  • Mycota - Taxonomy of Glomeromycota, Zygomycota, and maybe other groups. Ethnomycology, edible fungi (not limited to mushrooms), fungi in popular culture.
  • Halved sandwich-Young mushroom enthusiast, specializes in taxonomy of Coprinus and Lycoperdon.
  • NoahElhardt - Not an expert by a long shot, but I have interest in the field and will help out here and there.
  • RSIferd - Not an expert, but avid hunter and cultivator. Busy with school now but will contribute as much as possible.
  • Cas Liber 00:50, 21 September 2006 (UTC) - Am in Oz and eaten and picked a few thingies such as Suillus granulatus
  • Debivort - collector - used to be "artist in residence" at the Telluride Mushroom Festival, whatever that means.
  • Stemonitis — general biologist
  • Scharks - Background in food microbiology with an interest in yeasts.
  • Richard Barlow - fascinated by fungi but don't know as much as I would like to - will do what I can
  • User:Michaelll - Fungi enthusiast
  • Alan Rockefeller - Specializing in ethnobotany, electrical engineering and the taxonomy of the Hymenomycetes.
  • Nemetona — mycologist with an interest in small fungi (molds, ascomycetes, and zygomycetes)
  • Dixonsej - haven't really got a clue, but interested in this sort of stuff.

[edit] Goals

  1. Describe all major divisions and other notable taxa of the kingdom Fungi.
  2. For species, describe (where applicable) morphology, taxonomy, distribution, autecology, usage in food and medicine, toxicity, trivia, and other notable aspects.
  3. Describe all notable aspects of fungal biology.
  4. Describe the history of the science of mycology and notable contributors to that field.

[edit] Article Structure

  • Taxoboxes should be given for taxa at all levels. Genus and species names in taxoboxes should include the author of the taxon in addition to the genus name or binomial.
    • Articles about species with macroscopic fruiting bodies should include Mycomorphboxes.
  • The classification should use currently recognized monophyletic groups whenever. In some cases, such as the Zygomycetes, paraphyletic taxa may need to be listed until a generally accepted classification of those groups comes into use.
  • Biographies of mycologists should include the Template:Infobox_Scientist, which should include that individual's botanical author abbreviation, if they have one.

For examples where most of these aspects have been described, see Psilocybe, Galerina, Myco-heterotrophy, Arbuscular mycorrhizas, and H. W. Harkness.

[edit] General strategy

[edit] Articles to be written or expanded

There are a number of articles on important topics that have either yet to be written or are stubs and need to be expanded. These are listed in the following places:

[edit] Other articles needing attention

From time to time other issues with articles come up of varying importance. These may include articles to be merged or moved.

[edit] Articles needing pictures

These articles are about a fungus for which no picture is available. Please help by finding or taking a picture of this fungus and adding the image.

A great source for wikipedia fungus images is http://mushroomobserver.org. All the images there are high resolution and more importantly are shared under the creative commons license, allowing us to use them.

Articles which need images include:

And many others. Please add to this list, and you can find more mushrooms which need photos by looking through Category:Basidiomycetes.

[edit] Fungus article

The main article for this topic, Fungus, needs to be restructured according to the "To Do" list found on Talk:Fungus, and a number of sections need to be added or expanded accordingly. However, the article itself is getting quite large, so a number of breakout articles should be created, with the appropriate section of the mother article having a link to the breakout article, followed by a shorter version of the breakout article. (See History of Russia for a good example of an article with this kind of structure.)
