[edit] Title

WikiProject on Frederic Chopin

[edit] Scope

The goals of the project are to create a multimedia CD about Frédéric Chopin with everything that's worth knowing about him (complete works, biography, encyclopaedia about romantic music and XIX century). The project will gather and expand the information from three sources Wikipedia, Project Gutenberg and Mutopia Project and stimulate the collaborations between them.

The choice of Frédéric Chopin is strictly mine and could change if the community finds a better candidate.

[edit] Goals

The goal of this project is to create a multimedia CD encyclopedia in the form of a monography about Frederic Chopin. The CD (or DVD) should consist of three parts well mixed together:

  1. An enciclopedic part using the material from Wikipedia about:
    • Frederic Chopin and his life (a good biography)
    • His friends and people that influenced him, like e.g. George Sand or Franz Liszt
    • His time, with a part of history of Poland and France during the XIX century. This should I think include the repartition of Poland at the end of XVIII century.
    • The Romantic music and the styles of interpreting it.
    • The biographies of the most famous (and not so famous if you find OGG files of someone else that we can distribute) interpreters of Chopin's music, like Maurizio Pollini, Krystian Zimmermann, Martha Argerich
  2. A musical part using the material from Mutopia Project with:
    • Full scores of Chopin's Opera Omnia
    • MID files of it (it is automatically generated from the scores)
    • The possibility of the easy creation of "expansion sets", which will add OGG or even MP3 files with the interpretations of great pianists. This way the user will be able to rip his collection and easilly add it to the encyclopedia and producers will be able to create commercial expansion sets and distribute so also the free part.
  3. A literature part from Project Gutenberg. It would be very interesting to have also Chopin's letters and other writings to complete the panorama about his life.

[edit] Features

The CD should be:

  • 'FREE', like Free Software. Free like in freedom and not like in beer: single CDs could be sold to support the three contributing projects at a reasonable price (e.g. something like 5€). Thus I prefer to put it under GFDL or GPL rather than public domain. If we want to permit commercial "expansion sets" we should also discard CC license and derivatives. Personnally I'd like to get an expansion set of the interpreters I don't already own.

Comments:

  • 'OS independent'. It shouldn't depend of the OS of your machine, but should be written using general technologies like XHTML, JavaScript or better ECMAScript. I don't know yet how to implement a search engine, but if we would need something more Java should help us. Mozilla and Firefox are quite OS independent browser, I thought of creating also a specialized extension for them using their XUL technology (I know that IE has ActiveX technology that is quite powerful, but it is *NOT* system independent). Obviously since most people use IE the normal browser interface should be as complete as possible.

Comments:

  • 'Accessible'. Music is one of the better things to apply some accessibility policies. Aural CSS specifies some styles for helping navigation to sight impaired people.

[edit] Contents

The Wikipedia articles that concern this project are listed in the articles section.

The Mutopia Project and Project Gutenberg contribution should be all the music composed by Chopin and all letters or other writings written by him.

[edit] Tasks

  1. I am busy these days to type some copyright free music in Lilypond Chopinhauer 00:16, 15 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Activity Reports

The weekly reports on the activity of this project are posted to the /Weekly reports page.

[edit] Adopt an article

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.
