[edit] Scope

WikiProject Former countries is a collaboration to define a structure and formulate a template for articles about countries that existed in history, but no longer exist as political entities.

For the scope of articles see Category:Former countries.

A list is also available Wikipedia:WikiProject Former countries/Status (not updated - this list should eventually be superceded after all entries have been assessed).

[edit] Things to do

This page contains the box featured in the {{WPFC}} banner and any other project-related things that need to be worked on.

[edit] Parentage

No parent WikiProjects are defined. However a level of coordination with WikiProjects like WikiProject Countries, WikiProject Unrecognized countries and WikiProject History is desirable.

[edit] Collaborations with other WikiProjects

WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology - through the exchange of banners, we will assist this project in compiling their catalog of heraldry-related articles, while at the same time getting their help in tracking down missing flag/heraldry images for entries on former countries.

WikiProject historical atlas - this new project wishes to create a full historical atlas. Co-operation with this project will be via our Catrography department (still under construction)

[edit] Assessment

This section is now up and running. The {{WPFC}} banner must now be placed on all former country entries and ratings assigned.

[edit] Cartography

Every entry needs a map indicating the location of the country in question. This is a place for map-makers to come together.

[edit] Templates

Infobox: Template:Infobox Former Country (Syntax)

Ultimately, this infobox should be in place on all historical state entries, including links to its preceding and succeeding forms. This infobox also places the entry into various categories: see list here

Banner: {{WPFC}} This should be placed at the top of the talk page of any former country. In addition to an article rating, the banner also contains a few important article request features if the following parameters are given:

[edit] Structure

This structure is advisory only, and should not be enforced against the wishes of those actually working on the article in question. Not all states were the same, and the same template might not be appropriate for a different state. However, having the same "look & feel" for these articles is desirable.

The article should start with a good introduction, giving name of the country, location in the world, bordering countries, seas and the like. Also give other names by which the country may still be known (for example Holland, Persia). Also, add a few facts about the country, the things that it is known for (for example the mentioning of windmills in the Netherlands article).

  • Infobox - see above
  • Geography - Quick description of the country's main features, climate, . Include link to "Geography of X".
  • History - A brief outline of the major events in the country's history (about 4 to 6 paragraphs should do).
  • (Subdivisions) - Quick overview of the administrative subdivisions of the country (e.g. provinces, states, departments, etc.) Provide a table of the uppermost divisions. If the uppermost level consists of just a few groupings of the next level, include both levels. The table should contain about one to three dozen entries. Include a map graphic that shows these subdivisions. Link to articles about each subdivision.
  • Miscellaneous topics - a list of links to all the other topics closely related to the country.
  • External links - Links to websites about the country.
  • ...and make sure that the {{WPFC}} banner is on the talk page
