What this page is (and what this page isn't):

A few Wikipedians, united by their interest in Enix/Square Enix's popular Dragon Quest series of console role-playing games, pooled their talents to make various suggestions as to how we might best organize data regarding the series. These are only suggestions, a means to provide focus and get prospective editors going, and no one should feel at all obligated to follow them. Beyond that, this project is designed as a place where both veteran and neophyte editors can compare notes, discuss future goals, and address issues of a general scope. In short, because we want you to write articles, we're trying to make it as easy as possible for you to do so!

WikiProject Dragon Quest

[edit] Scope

This WikiProject aims to create articles relating to all twelve installments of the Dragon Quest series, as well as spin-off and related titles, and to standardize the content and format of data in those articles. In addition, this WikiProject aims to provide some degree of damage control for poorly written or extraneous Dragon Quest articles.

[edit] Style guide

To keep a consistent style to the articles, these guidelines should be followed.

The article name, when first mentioned, should be bold. Game names and song titles should be italicized (as well as bolded when it comes to the first mention).

In general, abbreviations or other shorthand should be avoided: when referring to Dragon Quest V, spell out the full title of the game, don't abbreviate it as DQV or DQ5. The same goes for role-playing game. Even though most editors will likely understand what you mean, Wikipedia is a general interest encyclopedia, and the casual user may not be familiar enough with gaming terminology to make sense of what many of us take for granted.

Naming conventions should follow the official English language localizations of the series, where available: Loto should be referred to as Erdrick when referring to the Dragon Warriors 1-3, etc. The one exception is in the titles of pre-Dragon Quest VIII localizations: to prevent confusion between Dragon Quest II and Dragon Warrior II, the titles should be referred to by their original Japanese name. In general, new localizations supersede older localizations: it is valid to refer to the item Medicinal herb from Dragon Quest VIII (as per the PlayStation 2 release) as opposed to the Herb (the original Nintendo version of Dragon Warrior). If there are any questions about what to call a specific thing, you should post a note on the article's talk page.

Games in the Dragon Quest series are numbered using Roman numerals, not Arabic numerals. In other words, you should refer to Dragon Quest IX, not Dragon Quest 9.

Articles should be categorized in the correct subcategory of Category:Dragon Quest. Remember, categories are inherited: an article placed in Category:Dragon Quest characters does not also need to be placed in Category:Dragon Quest.

[edit] What do we include?

The main criteria for inclusion, as it is for Wikipedia as a whole, is notability. Although Wikipedia is not bound by the size constraints of the printed page, too much detailed information can be daunting to the uninitiated, who may not want anything more than a general overview.

That being said, it's not always easy to judge what is notable and what isn't. We're not GameFAQs: we don't need to have detailed statistics for every character and enemy in the series. We also aren't in the business of providing gameplay strategies. Ideally, a good article should consist of at least two paragraphs of essential information. Anything less than that should probably be included within a larger article or list.

[edit] Goals

  1. To create a consensus on what should be included.
  2. To create a consistent look and style for each type of page: games, characters, places, and so on.

[edit] To do list

  • See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Dragon Quest/to do

[edit] General

  • A new icon for the project, and for DQ in general. I was thinking that we could have a stylized "DQ", with a blue slime, or a King Metal Sword in between the D and the Q. It can be similar to this; Image:FF_project_logo.png
  • Let's make some articles for the numerous Dragon Quest soundtracks.
  • There is extensive Dragon Quest manga out there. Let's write as much about it as we can.
  • If we can write some decent articles about Dragon Quest characters, let's do that. Ramia may be a good article, since that's a character in multiple Dragon Quest games. Perhaps we also need an article such as List of Dragon Quest characters.
  • We should create a Manual of style
  • We should create a separate to do page where users can add pages that they think need expansion, creation, improvement, movement, etc.

[edit] Add references

Starting with the main series games.
