This Manual of Style of Wikiproject Contract bridge has the simple purpose of making the bridge-related articles easy to read by following a consistent format — it is a style guide. The following rules do not claim to be the last word. One way is often as good as any other, but if everyone does it the same way, Wikipedia will be easier to read and use, not to mention easier to write and edit. For general style guidelines, see Wikipedia:Manual of Style.

Contents

[edit] Formatting

[edit] Capital letters

  • Use lowercase words for cards, e.g. "king", "ace" or "deuce"
  • Use uppercase letters for players, i.e. "North", "South", "West" and "East".

[edit] Narration

[edit] Presentation

Use templates {{Cs}}, {{Ds}}, {{Ss}} and {{Hs}} for suit symbols. Do not use "C" "D" "H" and "S".

[edit] Cards

  • Card symbol should be preceded by the suit symbol, i.e. ♣K, 3. There is no space between the two.
  • Do not mix the symbols for suits and cards, i.e. the following forms are not correct:
    • ♣ king
    • club K
  • Use deuce rather than two, jack rather than knave and three rather than trey

[edit] Distribution

Suit distribution notation will follow this convention:

  • Four numbers with three separators: e.g., 4-4-3-2 or 4=4=3=2
  • The numbers refer to suit lengths
  • If the separators are hyphens, specific suit lengths are ambiguous. For example, 4-4-3-2 denotes any hand with two four card suits, a tripleton and a doubleton.
  • If the separators are equal signs, the specific suit lengths are in rank order. For example, 4=6=1=2 specifies a hand with four spades, six hearts, one diamond and two clubs.

[edit] Bidding

  • When presented by symbols, the level should precede the denomination, e.g. 2♣ or 3NT. There is no space between the number and the symbol.
  • Bidding should be presented inline only when the sequence is short, i.e. up to five bids. In that case:
    • separate the bids of the same round with en-dash (–) or use the first symbol (–) from the editing toolbar. There should be a space between.
    • separate the rounds with a semicolon without preceding space.
    • if an opponent's intervention should be included, put it in parentheses

Example: 1 – (1♠) – Dbl; 2 – 2♠;

  • When presented by symbols, use Dbl and Rdbl rather than double and redouble.
  • When a sequence of bids is longer, present it with a table. West should always be in the first column, regardless of who is the dealer. In this way, the layout of the table better corresponds with the layout of the diagram. For example:
Code Gives
{|class="wikitable"
!West||North||East||South
|-
| ||1{{Hs}} ||1{{Ss}} ||Dbl
|-
|Pass || 2{{Ds}} ||Pass ||2{{Ds}}
|}
West North East South
1 1♠ Dbl
Pass 2 Pass 2♠
  • Use "M" for "a major suit" and "m" for "a minor suit" for inline bidding, when the intent is to refer to either major or to either minor. For example, 1 – 1M; 2♣ subsumes both 1 – 1; 2♣ and 1 – 1♠; 2♣.

[edit] Diagrams

Full hand diagrams should follow the style at Contract bridge diagram and use {{BridgeHand}}. Partial hands should use one of the other templates in Category:Bridge templates.
