As we move towards Wikipedia 1.0 at the end of 2004, it may be worthwhile to have a list of important aircraft that should have reasonable coverage by then. The following lists are arbitrary ones, taken from the types covered by the partwork World Aircraft Information Files. I suggest they're as good as any other arbitrary list.
They've probably missed some of your favourite types (they've missed some of mine too), but rather than extend these lists ad infinitum, I'm proposing we treat them as fixed and see how much of them we can cover (while still adding other machines we're personally obsessed with, of course!) For what it's worth, pre-World War II types seem under-represented, and British types seem over-represented. X-planes, prototypes, and projects aren't listed at all.
First glances indicate that we've got a pretty good breadth of types here already, which is very encouraging... and hopefully also shows up some of the glaring omissions that still exist.

Good idea- perhaps it can be "Aircraft 1.0" for the project. Another Benchmark from US Air Force Fact File [here]
