[edit] Q21

On a surprisingly related topic:

What flamboyant forward famously celebrated a goal by kissing an opposition player on the cheek? Snottygobble 05:04, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Guessing from a vague recollection: Akermanis? -- I@ntalk 05:42, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
I wouldn't be surprised. But that's not the one I'm looking for. Snottygobble 05:46, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
This rings a bell, on the tip of the tongue, on the tip of the tongue, almost there... Alan Jakovich? ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 07:53, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
Sounds like something Mark Jackson would do. --Roisterer 14:14, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
Pippu again. Allan Jakovich gave his brother Glen a big kiss. Snottygobble 23:57, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q22

For those of you who may have been listening to Rex on the weekend: Which club used to feature the Hyde St Band at its home ground (before the game and at half time)? ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 03:06, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Richmond Gnangarra 04:08, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Correct state, wrong team! ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 07:10, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
It's Pippu, it must be Footscray. Snottygobble 07:18, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Yes, yes...I'm far too predictable. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 08:47, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q23

We all know that Michael Tuck played the most VFL games. He played them all for the one club: Hawthorn. Who played the most VFL games in a career that spanned more than one club? Snottygobble 11:32, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Bernie Quinlan played 366 games for Footscray and Fitzroy. I don't know if this is still the record for a career with two clubs, but the question said VFL, so I guess it's who you're after. JPD (talk) 11:55, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Dammit, should've check earlier! Jasrocks Talk 11:57, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Well done JPD. Snottygobble 12:17, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q24

Once again, the same sort of topic: Who is the New South Welshman who has played the most VFL/AFL games? JPD (talk) 13:26, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

I'll take a punt on Terry Daniher. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 14:19, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
That's the answer I was looking for - 313 games for South Melbourne and Essendon. Over to Pippu. JPD (talk) 15:20, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q25

Which is the only player in the history of the VFL/AFL to have won each of the Morrish, Gardner and Brownlow medals? (obviously at various stages in his career, and not necessarily with the same club) ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 21:45, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q26

Which former Port Adelaide Magpie defender was the only player to knock Leigh Matthews out cold? --Roisterer 17:44, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

I don't even know if he was a defender, but I will take a guess at Russell Ebert (I can't think of any other magpie names from that era). ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 23:44, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
'fraid not. However, the player in question made opposition players fear his footsteps enough to allow Ebert to pick up kicks at his disposal. --Roisterer 02:54, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
Brian Cunningham ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 12:29, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
I don't think opposition players ever feared Bucky's footsteps, partly because they were too busy chasing those footsteps. Don't tell me I'm the only Port fan here. For a clue, the player in question's nephew is currently an AFL listed player with Port. There you go, I've just given the answer away. --Roisterer 16:21, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
Craig Ebert, Gnangarra 10:53, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
No but good thinking. We can also rule out Russell Ebert's other brother who played for Port, Jeff as the player in question. As it seems that no one is going to get this question without major clues (or access to Leigh Matthews' auutobiography), I'll just require the nephew's name. He was drafted by Port at the 2004 National Draft from Sturt Football Club. --Roisterer 02:53, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
Ben Eckermann drafted at no51 2004, Gnangarra 03:35, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
Yes, indeed. Ivan Eckermann is his famous uncle who ironed out Lethal in a 1981 State of Origin Match. For more info on Ivan check out his biography at Full Points Footy. Meanwhile, over to you Gnangarra. --Roisterer 04:09, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q27

Born in Canberra, this player recruited by WAFL club Perth, was part of the first Eagles squad before switching to NRL ? Gnangarra 04:24, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

yep Gnangarra 07:25, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
This was one of the more intriguing questions to date - had no idea, but it all made a bit of sense once I checked the article on him - I wonder whether anyone has ever taken the next step and played first grade games in both codes. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 11:52, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
thanks, there one other point he was in the first squad for two new teams the Eagles and the Western Reds as each code expanded to national competitions. Gnangarra 12:52, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q28

Who, and in what year, did the last person who was a captain-coach play in the AFL/VFL? (I am unsure if the one I'm thinking of is the most recent) -- I@ntalk 09:29, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

  • I reckon Jezza must be pretty close, St Kilda 1980-81. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 10:07, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
    • That's a lot newer that mine - Barassi in 1969. I'll give it 24 hours and if no improvement, its yours. -- I@ntalk 10:12, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
    • thats right though he did share duties at st kilda, he was also captain coach 78, 79 at Carlton ... Gnangarra 10:44, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
1969 is too far back - off the top of my head I can think of Whitten at Footscray up to 1970 and then Big Nick at Carlton in 1972 - there must be at least one more that managed it for the rest of the 70s (but no more come immediately to mind - hang on, I'm sure there is an Essendon one around early to mid 70s) - good idea to wait the 24 hours though, because I don't know for sure. It is possible that Bluey Hampshire may have temporarily been Captain-Coach during the Footscray's pre-season of 1983, but in the end elected not to play and definitely only coached the actual season. Certainly by the late 1980s it had gone the way of the drop kick, torp and stab pass. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 11:49, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
    • I checked the honour boards of each club. Jezza was the last in VFL/AFL to captain coach. though he shared duties at St Kilda in 80 & 81 he was outright cc at Carlton 78, 79... templeton, edmond were the captains when hampshire coached the doggies...Gnangarra 12:56, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Its all yours Pippu. -- I@ntalk 04:50, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q29

I have a reasonable recollection that in the very late 70s or early 80s, a particular VFL team actually clocked up more than 40 behinds. What was the team and the actual score? They are the only bits I remember, I'm not sure who it was against and the year - but bonus points for whoever can guess that. The actual scoreline was bizarre back than, and continues to strike one as absolutely bizarre to this day (I'm confident no one has ever kicked more behinds since). I hope my memory is serving me well! ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 05:51, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

7 May 1977 (Round 6) — Hawthorn 25.41 (191) defeated St Kilda 16.7 (103). This is the record for most behinds scored by a team. Snottygobble 06:41, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
Grrr. You me by 2 minutes! But I did find a great stats site I've not seen before [1] (should have kept it to myself!) -- I@ntalk 06:43, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q30

What do these fine players all have in common?

Bruce Doull, Gordon Coventry, Leigh Matthews, Keith Greig, Guy McKenna.

Snottygobble 03:31, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Indeed. But that's not what I'm looking for. You can have Mark Ricciuto and Mark Browning too. Snottygobble 04:32, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
  • All wore the one number for their whole careers Gnangarra 04:43, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
If you say so. I'll pre-empt the suggestion that they all played 200 games by throwing in Shaun McManus too. Snottygobble 04:51, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
guess thats its some obscure relationship to Collingwood. Gnangarra 05:35, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
They all have a famous relative who works in television? ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 05:54, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
They were all state reps? ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 06:01, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Keep trying. What if I throw in Dick Reynolds and Peter Burgoyne? Snottygobble 06:07, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
All KO during a game? Gnangarra 07:26, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
They've won the most brownlow votes for their respective clubs? ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 07:39, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Nope. You can have Nathan Burke and Chris Grant now. Snottygobble 11:59, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
They've all had more than one guernsey number in their playing careers with the same club. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 12:44, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Maybe you should give us someone who isn't in this category? ;-) JPD (talk) 13:11, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
They have all worn protective head gear Gnangarra 17:23, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Gordon Coventry had Syd Coventry, Lethal has Kelvin Matthews, Peter Burgoyne has Shaun and Chris Grant has Jamie Grant. Mark Ricciuto's brother was talked about being a star footballer but never kicked on, Keith Greig's brother, IIRC, was on a Scanlan's footy card, etc. Beyond that, I have no idea whether I am on the right track or not. --Roisterer 17:34, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Okay, you've suffered enough. Time to bring out the clue-stick. There's one name for each team:
Adelaide: Mark Ricciuto
Brisbane Bears: I don't know
Brisbane Lions: Michael Voss
Carlton: Bruce Doull
Collingwood: Gordon Coventry
Essendon: Dick Reynolds
Fitzroy: Paul Roos
Fremantle: Shaun McManus
Geelong: John Newman
Hawthorn: Leigh Matthews
Kangaroos: Keith Greig
Melbourne: Robert Flower
Port Adelaide: Peter Burgoyne
Richmond: Jack Dyer
St Kilda: Nathan Burke
Sydney / Souths: Mark Browning
University: I don't know
Western Bulldogs / Footscray: Chris Grant
West Coast: Guy McKenna
Flower got a few mentions in the media this year. If you can remember why, that might help. Snottygobble 00:19, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
And for PJD: Neither Michael Tuck nor Chris Langford are on the list ;-) Snottygobble 00:28, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
  • I note that all the players started as teenagers and had long careers. Each player was the youngest to reach 100 games or 200 games for their respective clubs. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 00:51, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
Correct! That was a nasty one, wasn't it? Snottygobble 02:12, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
The worst so far by a long shot - although the Port player that knocked out Lethal was pretty obscure - I now feel compelled to respond in kind. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 02:19, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q31

There was a famous incident in an Essendon v Footscray game at the Western Oval in 1973 when Don McKenzie kicked Footscray's 2nd ruckman, breaking his leg. Men were men in those days, and the big man took his free kick from about 10 metres out, and dobbed it with a broken leg. This big man went on to become a great ruckman at another club- who is he? ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 02:19, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

C'mon guys and gals - it's not that bad! When I say he was big, I mean he could stand next to Big Nick and not feel intimidated. He went on to become a great ruckman at another club, perhaps is best remembered for playing with that club (which experienced turmoil at the end of the 1981 season). He finished his career in the VFA, possibly as a Captain-Coach with some success. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 04:27, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

By the way, who is Grant Simmons? ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 06:34, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Actually, I have two great questions brewing.
he played for the doggies in the early 70's 193cm, tall debut 1971. Gnangarra 07:15, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

There was six clubs involved in the spilt from the VFA to the create the VFL in the 1890's two other clubs were invited to join the competition who are those two clubs. Gnangarra 07:15, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Carlton and St Kilda. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 09:49, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q33

Firstly, I hope people aren't pulling out? In 1973, as a 16 year old kid I kicked 104 goals from full forward for Traralgon in my first full year of senior football. Needless to say I was picked up by a VFL club the following year (at a time when zoning applied). I spent the first two weeks in the reserves where I kicked a total of 15 goals, a sum that was to lead the reserves goalkicking until about round 16. I debuted in round 3 against Collingwood and kicked 6 goals. Some years down the track I would win the league goalkicking in two consecutive years, and then immediately snaffle a Brownlow after being shifted to centre half forward. Injury cut my career short. Who am I? ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 11:32, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q34

I am thinking of a player who topped his club's goal kicking for 12 years in a row, all but one of the seasons he was at the club. However, he was the league's top goal kicker on only one occaision. If this isn't enough to narrow it down, I'll have to give another clue, but let's see... JPD (talk) 13:08, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Tony Lockett Gnangarra 13:10, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q35

From memory, 1990 was the first year of the renamed AFL. I would like to try a double barelled question in relation to the opening round of that season. My mates and I had chartered a six-seater from Canberra to Melbourne to witness something special (nothing to do with the new name of the league, or at least not directly). We went from Essendon Airport to the Western Oval, only to see Footscray go down to St Kilda. Footscray's appearance on the ground to start the game was met with an unusually eerie silence.

  1. What was so special about Footscray's opening game in 1990, that was the cause for the unusual crowd behaviour and the main reason why I did my dough on a chartered flight?
  2. The only good news for Footscray that day is that a skinny 17 year old debuted for them at full forward, kicking 2 or 3 goals, and showing a bit. That season he became the youngest player to ever reach the 50 goal mark, and he would go on to become a champion key position player for the Bulldogs. Who is he?

ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 08:20, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

2. is Chris Grant he played 21 games that season and kicked 51 goals Gnangarra
1. it was the first game after the 1989 save the doggies campaign which forstalled an attempt to close the club. Gnangarra 08:36, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
Bloody hell, that was quick! ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 08:45, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

sorry everyone - Tony Free is the one I had in mind - that's right, he remained on the list in 97 but didn't play - I recall he started helping out the coaching staff mid way through the year, and so the writing was definitely on the wall. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 12:39, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q39

Well I only know Port Adelaide so I will have to ask a Port related question but this should be easy:

Who am I? I am a left-footed rover who made my VFL debut in 1982 before getting the Lemonade and Sars in 1985 and moving to Port Adelaide. I was a useful contributor without being brilliant at Port, so it surprised many when another VFL club recruited me in 1986. I spent 5 seasons at this club before retirement. I have since moved into coaching. --Roisterer 11:50, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

As no one seems to be having any luck with this question, I can add that the player coached successfully in the VFL and is currently an assistant coach at an AFL club. --Roisterer 04:09, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Dwayne Russell ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 06:14, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
Dwayne hailed from Port, was a strong marking forward and only played for one VFL/AFL club. So, no. Think smaller than Dwayne. --Roisterer 12:05, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
at least you didnt say he's an assistant at collingwood. Gnangarra 12:24, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Lol it was oblique refernce to the clues Mick got more assistances than he's got players on the listGnangarra
What Brad Gotch? Jasrocks Talk 11:55, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Brad Gotch is right. Debuted for Fitzroy in 1982 before being cut and recruited to Port. I remember seeing him play for Port in 1985 and thinking that he wasn't anything special. So, many at Port were surprised when St Kilda recruited him and he spent five seasons with the Saints. He then won a VFL flag as a coach and now is an assistant coach at Colingwood. Over to Jasrocks. --Roisterer 12:48, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
I understand he may even only have played about half the season at Port - is that right? Speaking of players who didn't look like anything special and then went on to do good... hang on... I'll make that one my next question - if I ever get another go! ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 01:25, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
