WikiContact

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WikiContact is a free, editable catalogue of people and cities. It is just like Wikipedia, but it is specifically a collection of information about people. It allows users to create pages about themselves and include whatever information they would like - name, address, phone numbers, email address, school, employer, birthday, life history, and even allows for uploading pictures. Users can link to friends or related people.

WikiContact is a type of social networking site, like MySpace or Facebook, but more free and clean. It is free in that you have more power to create and edit what you want, and free in the sense that you don't have to pay to access information, there are no ads, and personal data will never be inappropriately used. It is clean because the users keep it that way and the Wiki Media software running the site allows for proper formatting, unlike many social networking websites that allow for spyware, viruses, slow-loading pages, etc.

The purposes of the site are:

  • Keeping current lists of current classmates, co-workers, family members, and friends
  • Finding old classmates from college or high school
  • Finding old co-workers
  • Finding friends who have moved to a new city
  • Keeping geneological records of ancestors who have passed on
  • Serving as a tribute to loved ones who have passed on
  • Serving as a history of people
  • Indexing people based on location, school, employer, race, and any other affiliation
  • Finding events that are going on near you and people involved with those events
  • Communicating with friends and family via online discussion groups
