[edit] Images

Great images, could you possibly provide some source information for where you got them from? Cheers. -- Graham ☺ | Talk 17:08, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)

It's great that you're uploading pictures from you own collection, but you still need to list clearly on each image page the source of that photograph. This is so that other users know that they're not copyright violations. -- Graham ☺ | Talk 19:42, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I notice a lot of your images are under the CC non-commercial licence. As I understand it this is incompatible with the philosophy of Wikipedia as a free encyclopedia. The GFDL that Wikipedia content is made available under allows commercial use, and it became official policy a while ago that non-commercial images would not be allowed. I'm telling you this not because I'm going round trying to enforce the policy but because I uploaded a few non-commercial images a while ago and then found out they were all destined for deletion. I argued about it at the time, saying that it should be possible to use computer metadata to filter out images that weren't licenced for whatever it was someone who reproduces Wikipedia content is trying to achieve, but I didn't get very far. Since that time it seems there has been no further movement on deleting non-commercial images, but I suspect it will happen sooner or later. If you own the copyright to an image you've uploaded under a non-commercial use licence and you're prepared to allow commercial use to keep it in Wikipedia then it might be an idea to relicence it at some point. I don't think it's a matter of urgency though, just making you aware of what might happen in the future. — Trilobite (Talk) 23:13, 20 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I use your picture Orinico ciudad bilivar venezuela.jpg in the article http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orinoco if it is ok. --217.2.47.245 29 June 2005 19:51 (UTC)

[edit] Industrial health and safety issues in asbestos-related diseases

I think this article looks fairly good now. I'm not sure if the inline external links are a good idea, though. The favoured style is by turning them into footnotes. Otherwise no complaints. JFW | T@lk 03:11, 23 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Thanks JFW. Wikityke 13:36, 23 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I'm moving the article to asbestos and the law, since it's mostly about legal issues: regulations on handling, litigation arising from exposure. Nothing in the article actually links exposure levels to cancer (not that I'm doubting this).
The article needs to mention that the laws and litigation stem from public perception of the links. And then refer to the asbestosis article which explains the theory that asbestos fibers irritate the lungs, causing scarring, etc. If there are any studies correlating airborne asbestos exposure to lung diseases (like cancer), those should be cited too!
Finally, if there are any advocates trying to play up (or down) the risks of exposure -- perhaps for a financial motive? -- we should describe their advocacy as fairly as possible. Like Prof. Sei Feir of Islamabad Univerisity says asbestos inhalation causes no harm at all or The U.S. EPA estimates that 1,000 miners died each year from 1935 to 1985 from inhalation of fibers.
Wikipedia should not take sides in the controversy, but present all the arguments given by each side, including scientific studies (if any). Then the reader can make up his mind. --user:Ed Poor (talk) 15:29, Jan 24, 2005 (UTC)
Couldn't agree more, Ed. Thanks, Wikityke 20:37, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Sheffield photos

Hi! Whilst browsing the Sheffield article I noticed that there are two photos that you added in June and July of last year. Both of these photos are marked with the {{unverified}} tag which, I think, means that they are likely to be deleted at some point. Do you have information on the source and copyright status of these photos? Thanks, JeremyA 22:21, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

OK Dbenbenn, As advised on your talk page some minutes ago I intended to change the license details to a form acceptable by the current Wikipedia rules on this subject. This has now been undertaken and I request removal of the IFD tags and reverts of the deleted links in the associated articles. Thanks in advance for your cooperation. Regards, Wikityke 03:14, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Debenbenn, - ok , I guess you're busy. I've reverted the edits, after duly "opening" the image licenses. PLEASE CHECK that everything's now ok. Regards, Wikityke 03:45, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
You haven't updated the license of Image:Avebury henge and village UK.jpg. Also, I've left Image:Dislocation edge d.jpg on WP:IFD since it isn't used anywhere. dbenbenn | talk 18:36, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] ArbCom

[edit] AMA Coordinator Election

Dear AMA Member,

You are entitled to vote in the AMA Coordinator election, set to begin at midnight on 3 February 2006. Please see the pages on the election and its candidates and the procedure and policy and cast a vote by e-mail!

Wally 11:39, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Wikityke,
I got your message and responded on the AMA talk board already. Short version is that I and the members voting on the talk page felt secret ballot a more positive expression of individual views rather than public voting, especially in the wake of the shoddy ArbCom election. We're always looking for new viewpoints if you want to participate on the talk page in the future, though — consensus requires many contributors. Wally 20:10, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Happenings at the AMA

There was an election, but it came out a tie. Now no one seems to feel there is any legitimacy to anyone stepping forward and taking charge. What do you think? Alex756 03:23, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

There was initially a tie 9-9, but then Alex756, who hadn't voted, providing the casting vote in my favour. I've been keeping a low profile since because it's a bit of an awkward situation, but this is degenerating into a bit of a farce, so I'm going to put my foot down soon. Ambi 03:46, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
We decided without objection to have Alex decide on the tie-breaker, and so as far as I'm concerned Ambi is the new Coordinator. Whether or not she will be putting her foot down is a matter for her. Wally 06:51, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
For what it is worth since Keith does not seem really interested that is the final nail in the coffin so to speak. I would have hoped that the advocates that suggested that I caste the deciding vote would have gotten closure on this, but apparently even though they made that suggestion they wimped out when it came to taking a stand on their decision (see Keith's post below) and they have let the situation just meander for a while. I hope Ambi puts her foot down and gets down to business, maybe the controversy will get the AMA some needed attention from some of its apathetic (but still somewhat useful) membership. Alex756 04:32, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] AMA election results

I never got notified, either. It looks like Alex's statement that he would have voted for Ambi [1] was used as the deciding factor. Which I don't really disagree with (though I would have liked for the AMA to make the decision on how to split the tie, but Wikipedians increasingly abhor doing things right).

It was either that, or Kim Bruning's coin toss. [2]

What confuses me is that, after seemingly accepting Alex's sentiment as the deciding vote, he subsequently proposed forming a governing committee with the reasoning "As there is not yet a settlement". [3]

[edit] Sheffield wikiproject

Hi! I am writing to you as someone who has contributed to the articles on the Sheffield area. Captain scarlet suggested that we start a Sheffield wikiproject. As I think that this is a good idea I have started drafting ideas at User:JeremyA/Sheffield. If you are interested in the idea please add your name to the list and feel free to edit the draft project page. Thanks, JeremyA 15:39, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for signing up. As we now have five participants I have moved the draft project pages to Wikipedia:WikiProject Sheffield, you might want to add this page to your watchlist. JeremyA 22:27, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Alexandre Bischoff

The article was speedied by RasputinAXP for being a non-notable bio. I can't offer any more insight than that, my deletion was just clearing up the dead redirect. —Xezbeth 21:53, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Asbestosis

Hey there Wikityke, nice work on the Asbestosis referencing! I've removed the tag as there's no need for it now. Regards SeanMack 00:48, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] SPTC badge

Hi ! I've tried for your SPTC badge and my result is this : . I've done it with Inkscape, so it's a .svg image. For the colours, it seems that the image you have loaded has a green much more clear than the original one. That's why when you watch the Wikipedia:Requested pictures/Graphics#Logos & Symbols where I've inserted my result close to yours, you can see a real difference. Tell me what you think of my try and if I should better it. The easier for me is that you write me on the french WP at fr:Discussion Utilisateur:Henry Salomé, I can see it every day, more than the en:WP. Hope you will be satisfied in some time... Sincerely, ℍenry, encyclophile (speak slowly, please) 17:35, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi Tyke ! Well, this morning when I saw the badge, I was not quite happy because there were some problems with the latin motto : the letters were up and down and some were badly inclined. So you have a new version (I've reduced too the frame). I don't know about british laws about copyright but in France where such laws are very strict, I believe we have no problems about copies from original drawings about subjects like blazons or signboards (I don't mean commercial logos). So you can be quiet about the licensing (anyway, you didn't draw it ! Maybe only french laws can be applied because the drawer is french ! LOL ! Other subject : french word for professional is professionnel with 2 n. Why 2 n ? I don't know. Anyway we say mariage instead of your marriage ! (French is such a nice and marvelous language, but so difficult to learn and use, even for us !) Translation of the motto : We learn [in order] to teach. (textually : We learn so that we teach). Cordially, ℍenry, encyclophile (speak slowly, please) 09:50, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Al stewart orange album 1972.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Al stewart orange album 1972.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. MECUtalk 02:15, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi MECU, thanks for the info'. It seems that the image (orignally included in Al Stewart ) has been replaced by another "fair use" item Image:AlStewart.jpg.

The new item is a more recent photo', but not an album cover, so I'm not sure how this fits in with current WIKI"fair use" policy. If the new one's ok from the legal aspect, I believe it's better than the one I uploaded and would have no objections to the latter being deleted. Regards, Wikityke 15:43, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Well, the article about the album already has a duplicate image, which I believed to be slightly better in color so I tagged this image as redundant. Also, the album cover should not have been used except for on the article about the album, so it was in appropriate to use on Al Stewart. The image there is also used under Fair Use, but I marked it as Fair Use Replaceable as it appear to me to just show the singer and have no special purpose, and thus replaceable. If you disagree, you may dispute it. I have also notified the uploader who may dispute it as well. Thank you for your response and sorry "your" image has to get deleted. --MECUtalk 15:52, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
No problem ! Wikityke 15:56, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Sheffield - Bombers

Hi Wikityke. You could use a photo of any of the bombers which were involved in the attacks and state in the caption that bombers like the one in the photo were involved. A photo of Sheffield during the war would be perfect though - not that I know anything about whether such photos are actually available to you (I live in Canberra, Australia). --Nick Dowling 07:26, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Asbestos

That's what I was trying to say, but I had writer's block. Thanks! --Uncle Ed 22:09, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Satellite photos etc.

Looks OK to me. I would maybe use a slightly different wording, but I'll think about that and suggest changes. It may be worth keeping an eye on Open Street Map. They don't have much coverage of Sheffield yet, but once they do if we want street maps for articles we could use theirs (the licence is cc-by-sa). —Jeremy (talk) 16:19, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

OK~. Thanks for that, Jeremy. Wikityke 16:24, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Crookes

Hi, ultimately I would like to see the UK place infobox removed from the Crookes article altogether (see my comments at WP:SHEFF). However, if we do decide to use this template in the Sheffield district articles like Crookes I think that its primary purpose is to display the location map. Removing the coords from the template stops that location map from displaying. Hopefully someone will fix the template, as I think that your suggestion for including a scale option is good. Thanks, —Jeremy (talk) 16:06, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

OK Jeremy, I wasn't aware of the problem associated with removing the Lat/Long from the infobox. Thanks for that. (I respond further on comments at WP:SHEFF). cheers, Wikityke 16:15, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
What you want regarding scale can be done (see User:JeremyA/Sandbox/Crookes). I have suggested the appropriate changes be incorporated into the infobox. —Jeremy (talk) 16:40, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
Nice one , Jeremy ! cheers, Wikityke 16:44, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
