Hi,
We'd like to use this image in HuWiki, but couldn't figure out the precise license for it. Could you help us out?
Thanks, nyenyec ☎ 22:00, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
The wiki owl released used on Wikinfo is based on an image owl.gif which was released into the public domain by its creator. User:Proteus http://wikinfo.org/wiki.php?title=User:Proteus modified it and created the wikiowl.gif by adding Wikinfo next to the image. I would rather you did not use that as it is our logo with the word Wikinfo on it. I suppose Proteus has the copyright on it as it is today. It originally came from http://www.123spot.com/clipartmis4.htm "Free Animal Clipart at 123spot!". Author Angela Miller, but that website is no longer up. She owned a kennel. I emailed her once (no reply) but she does not resolve by Google now. Fred Bauder 23:57, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer. I think it was intended to be used as an illustration for the Hungarian Wikipedia article about Wikinfo, but it ended up on our equivalent of WP:PUI, since the licensing information wasn't clear. Especially since [1] says: "The rectangular owl portion is a fair use image, which I modified with <wikinfo>, and made transparent, so it would look nice on namespace pages."
Hungarian copyright law has no equivalent to fair use and we usually don't allow copying of images from EnWiki marked as fair use.
I'm still a little bit confused about what the license is for the final Wikinfo logo. Could you mark it with a template here?
