Category:Wikipedians who think that the Wikimedia Foundation should use advertising

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

These are users who feel that the Wikimedia Foundation should utilize limited unobtrusive advertising and sponsored searches on its pages. The earnings potential of such advertising is decidedly higher than the fund raising drives the Foundation uses, with some (controversial and contested) evaluations putting the potential value of the Foundation's websites in the billions of US Dollars.

Some possible types of advertising would be text-only links on the bottom of main namespace articles only (similar to the proposed Citizendium solution); Google-like sponsored searches; and setting up accounts and/or partnerships with websites that the Project heavily links to, such as Amazon or IMDb.

The Foundation has lofty goals, and ever-increasing expenses as the projects precipitously expand. The Foundation's fund raising efforts have been a failure in light of its potential. Calculated, unobtrusive utilization of advertising revenue can healthily sustain the Foundation for many years, allowing the Foundation to take major steps towards the educational and societal changes it wishes to achieve.
