Widmerpool
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Widmerpool in the UK is a Nottinghamshire village, about 10 miles south of Nottingham. Since the 1960s it has become a very wealthy village for new arrivals. Until the 1960s there had not been any building in the village for 100 years. Its main landmark is the Widmerpool Hall on the north side of the village, which is currently undergoing renovation for residential purposes, and was previously home to the AA training school. There is a very detailed history of the village "Widmerpool a Century of Change 1900 to 2000" produced by Geoff Brooks of New Manor Farm Widmerpool (the oldest and one the few people living in the village that was born there).
The name 'Widmerpool' was employed by Anthony Powell for one of the characters in A Dance to the Music of Time; Powell was well aware of the Nottinghamshire associations of the name.
