Widelands is a slow-paced real-time strategy free computer game under the GPL. It takes many ideas from and is quite similar to The Settlers and The Settlers II. It is still in development, however, and may yet diverge from the games it is attempting to emulate. It is an open source project.

It is still a work in progress, with development still required in graphics and bugfixing.

[edit] Features

Widelands can be played as both a single-player game (against an artificial intelligence) and as multiplayer through a network or the internet.

Players control one of two tribes: Barbarians or The Roman Empire.

Terrain texture sets provide blackland, desert, Greenland and winterland worlds. Several maps for each set are provided, along with a map editor for making single maps and campaigns. In addition, maps from The Settlers II can be imported.

It has been localised for many languages.

The game runs on several operating systems such as Linux, BSD, Mac OS X and Windows.
