Wide Awake

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wide Awake is a 1998 film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. In this film about growing up, Joshua Beal (played by Joseph Cross) is a young boy who goes on a search for God after his grandfather dies. This film also features Julia Stiles in one of her earliest roles. Although made in 1995, it was not released until 1998.

Josh seeks the help of his friend Dave and a baseball-loving nun (played by Rosie O'Donnell) in his search for a supreme being. The movie ends with Josh realizing what he has been looking for has been there all along.

The film was nominated for "Best Family Feature - Drama" and "Best Performance in a Feature Film - Leading Young Actor" at the 1999 Young Artist Awards.

It is the only Shyamalan-directed film to date in which the director does not make a cameo appearance. Shyamalan has stated that he was disappointed with this movie because he feels the viewer cannot connect with the characters; however, many consider it to be the perfect movie to show to children who have questions about God and religion.
