Whyalla Technical High School was established in 1943 as a year 8 to year 12 school. There were 113 students enrolled at the school. The school's estimated build cost was $35,000, the school was given an extra $21,000 from BHP & an extra $5,000 from the government, this brought the total cost to $61,000. In 1961 the triple blocks were built and the estimated cost for the 2 buildings was $200,000.

In 1965-1966 temporary buildings (portables) were put up to hold the extra students, in 1966 there was 1,284 students at Whyalla Technical High School, in 1965 there was 1,480 students enrolled. Students were sent to Memorial Oval Primary School because there wasn't enough room to hold them all at the school. Soon after this Eyre Technical High School was opened and year 11 and year 12 students were spread out across the schools. Whyalla Technical High School was changed to a Year 8-10 school.

1971 the school changed its name from Whyalla Technical High School to Whyalla High School. Construction had started for the Hall in 1971 but had come to a stop shortly after, for around a year no progress was made on the hall but by 1972 it was finished and ready to be used.

In 1976 the library was given a face lift, a wall was put up at the top of the stairs, creating a corridor area which could be used by classes, and entrance doors were installed.

In 1991 the Whyalla Secondary College was established and the portable buildings were removed from Whyalla High School.

In 1998-2001 the school had record low enrollments, only having around 180 students, in 1998 only 40 students enrolled at Whyalla High School. This brought up the question "Was Whyalla High School needed?". There was discussion of the school closing but because of the rise in enrollments the school was saved. Between 2002 and 2007 the school has gone from 180 enrollments to 400. Currently the school has 386 students enrolled.
