Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Bobby Jones climbs down to get his golf ball from the bottom of a cliff, and finds a dying man, who utters his last words: "Why didn't they ask Evans?" Intrigued, Bobby and his friend Lady Frances Derwent put their own lives in danger to find out what happened to the dead man, and just who Evans is. There is a likely suspect but his charming personality puts them off his scent before they have properly investigated, though they eventually realise their mistake.
