[edit] History

The station first went on air on February 14, 1953 as an ABC affiliate under the call letters WTPA-TV, under local owners. WTPA-TV originally operated on channel 71, but bought an unbuilt construction permit for channel 27 held by another company and moved there in 1957 as WTPA-TV's Channel Number changed from Ch. 71 to Ch. 27. The station was sold to Starr Broadcasting Company in 1963. The Times Mirror Company acquired the station in 1980 and changed its calls to WHTM-TV. The station was sold to Smith Broadcasting Company in 1984 and acquired by its current owners Allbritton Communications in 1996.

The station launched its digital signal on VHF channel 10 in 1999.
