[edit] ITV's Announcement of the storyline
On 8th August 2006, ITV announced that Ken Farrington had decided to leave Emmerdale. Series Producer Kathleen Beedles was quoted as saying that: "Ken has been an asset to the show and will be greatly missed but his exit storyline is going to be extremely dramatic and memorable for viewers, which we're very excited about." In October 2006, ITV announced that Tom King would be killed off on Christmas Day 2006.[1]
[edit] Leading up to Christmas
[edit] Relationship with Rosemary
After Tom was kidnapped by Cain Dingle and Sadie King it was hard for him to re-adjust. Then Rosemary Sinclair came into his life and the King patriarch was given a new zest for life and fell for her. Their relationship was met by scepticism from Tom’s sons as they were fearful that Rosemary was only after Tom’s money, hence, their inheritance. Rosemary’s son, Grayson, didn’t approve of the new relationship either as he didn’t like the way it made Rosemary look.
After Tom asked Rosemary to move in to Home Farm his son Matthew wanted to do anything he could to get rid of Rosemary and with the help of Rosemary’s daughter in-law Perdy Matthew discovered that Rosemary was broke. Matthew was more than happy to announce this information at a family dinner and after a private conversation between Tom and Rosemary, the King patriarch proposed to which a delighted Rosemay wasted no time in accepting, much to the annoyance of both families. Not long after the announcement, Tom and Rosemary decided to get married on Christmas Day.
[edit] Tom’s enemies
While his relationship with Rosemary was blossoming Tom was making numerous enemies in the village.
[edit] Bob and Jamie Hope and Terry Woods
The Hope family could never forgive Tom for the house collapse that took young mum Dawn Woods from them. When Bob and Jamie Hope thought they had the chance of getting Tom sent down, the clever millionaire seemed always to be one step ahead of them. When Tom offered to pay the Hopes an out of court settlement if they dropped any civil actions against his family they turned it down straight away as they couldn’t stand him getting away with Dawn's murder. However there was one Hope who would accept Tom’s offer, Dawn’s mother, Jean Hope.
Jean felt that Bob and Terry’s vendetta against Tom was affecting Dawn and Terry’s son TJ. Jean took the money from Tom and left the village, but took TJ with her, and fled to Morocco. This angered the Hopes so much that Bob tried to run Tom down, twice, on the village main street. After this Bob’s heavily pregnant wife Viv pleaded with Bob to drop this vendetta which he begrudgingly did. Jamie however couldn’t be swayed as he felt so guilty for not trying to get Dawn out of the rubble after the house collapse. Terry too couldn’t let his bad feelings towards Tom as he had lost his son because of him.
[edit] Chas Dingle
For one of his plans to get revenge against Tom, Jamie enlisted the help of Chas Dingle. At first Chas didn’t want to help as she was engaged to Tom’s son Carl, but after seeing how cold Tom was when taking about the Hopes, Chas decided to help. Jamie was hoping to find the foreman who was in charge of the King’s River Showhome that collapsed and wasn’t seen since, as he was sent to Spain by Matthew King. Unfortunately for Jamie and Chas, Tom was once again one step ahead. Tom forced Chas to end her relationship with Carl and even paid her off. He threatened that if Chas told Carl about there arrangement then he would disown Carl. Chas was left heartbroken having lost the love of her life.
[edit] Jimmy, Matthew and Carl King
When Jimmy returned home, after been away recuperating from his injuries after the house collapse, he bore a lot of resentment towards his father. He blamed Tom for the collapse because of the pressure he put on Jimmy to have it open on time. It was because of Jimmy that Bob Hope wasn’t arrested for trying to run over Tom as he lied and said he didn’t see anything. Tom’s developing relationship with snooty Rosemary didn’t do anything to ease Jimmy’s hatred towards Tom.
Matthew too grew extremely frustrated with his father’s new love as he feared for his inheritance. When he discovered that his father was going to change his will, he became very fearful.
Carl would have been the more understanding of Tom and Rosemary but he still didn’t like her. His relationship with his dad took a turn for the worse when Chas “dumped” him. Carl couldn’t get his head around the fact that Chas ended their engagement. He eventually got Chas to reveal that she tried to help Jamie in his bid to get justice for Dawn. Carl was furious that Chas would betray his family. Tom tried to keep Carl onside by offering him the business after he retired.
Jimmy overheard this conversation and immediately told brother Matthew. Jimmy and Matthew couldn’t believe that Tom would screw them over like that after all the work they had done for him.
[edit] Len Reynolds
Even after the house collapse Tom still had one friend in the form of devoted employee Edna Birch. Unbeknownst to Tom, Edna had grown quite smitten with her employer. Edna even took Tom to her granddaughter Eve’s wedding blessing. It was at this blessing that Edna revealed to a shocked Tom that Eve’s father, Peter, was not her son but infact her sister Lily's. Tom was very understanding and helped Edna mend her relationship with estranged sister Lily. However this close friendship would come crashing down when Edna discovered a forged structural engineers report for the Showhome. When Edna confronted Tom about this she was shocked to find out that Tom knew along that the house collapse was down to negligence on the King’s part. Edna unsuccessfully tried to convince Tom to go to the police as it was the right thing but Tom shot back saying that if Edna went to the police than he would tell her “son” Peter the truth about his mother. Edna surprised Tom when she told Peter the truth herself, to which Peter stormed out and hasn’t been seen since, and then went to the authorities. But since Tom had the chance to get rid of any incriminating evidence, Edna’s claims couldn’t be proved and she went in to isolation at her home. Close friend Len Reynolds became very angry towards Tom after what he did to his true love Edna. Len’s anger spilled over when he punched and threatened Tom for what he did to Edna. After being separated by Carl, Len issued a chilling warning to Tom. “Don't let your guard, do you hear me? Because when you think you got away with this and you're sitting pretty, I'll be back to see justice is done. Do you HEAR ME!!!?”
[edit] Grayson Sinclair
Grayson was never a fan a Tom and Rosemary’s relationship and wasn’t that happy when Tom proposed to his mother. Grayson was fearful that Tom didn’t love Rosemary and only wanted her for her connections. Tom than wanted Grayson to draw up a contract stating that Tom was giving Rosemary full control of Home Farm Estates as a wedding present. Grayson made sure that the contract was air-tight, at the request of Rosemary as it didn’t take him long to divulge this to his mother. When Rosemary told Tom that Grayson was gay, it became clear that Tom was no longer comfortable with him and even made a few snide remarks behind his back, some of which Grayson overheard.
[edit] The Murder
Tom's wedding day didn't get off to the best start when a furious Terry chased Tom's limo down the village's main street and proceeded to drag the groom out of the limo and punch him right outside the church in front of all the guests, much to the delight of Jimmy and Matthew.
While tidying himself up, Jimmy and Matthew tried to persuade their dad that Terry hitting him was a sign not to get married but to no avail. Tom went ahead and married Rosemary as both family members looked on begrudgingly.
The reception then moved on to Home Farm. After Tom and Rosemary were introduced to their guests Jimmy and Matthew started taking some jibes at Carl, who was unaware that they knew that Tom was going to give him the business. They didn’t waste time in telling him what they knew and when Matthew made some disrespectful comments about Chas, Carl started a shoving match with Matthew and it wasn’t long before the three brothers started a brawl that ended up spilling out in to the reception during the bride and groom’s first dance. Tom was livid and pulled his sons aside. An angry Jimmy and Matthew told him that they knew what his plans were for the business and Tom was furious with their behaviour and threatened to cut them all off if they didn’t show him and Rosemary respect. While all this was going on Terry climbed a wall of Home Farm and ran on to the grounds. Not long after Jamie and Bob climbed the same wall. Bob was following Jamie while Jamie had some plans of his own.
Just when Tom was giving his wedding present to Rosemary, which only further increased his boy’s anger, an un-invited guest in Chas arrived at the reception with cousin Eli. It wasn't long before Chas made her presence known when she threw champagne over a woman flirting with Carl. Tom shouted for Zak to get rid of her, but not before Chas revealed the truth about her pay-off from Tom to Carl and tried to take a swing at Tom with a champagne bottle.
After Chas was taken away Matthew approached his new step-bother Grayson to ask him about his part in Tom’s wedding gift to Rosemary. Matthew then dropped some home truths saying that Grayson shouldn’t get too comfortable at Home Farm as it was his by right. As Matthew walked away it could be seen in Grayson’s expression that he was concerned about his mother’s security with Tom.
Grayson’s concerns were apparently true as when Tom and Rosemary had a quite word Tom revealed that he expected Rosemary to build up Home Farm Estates and then hand it over to Carl in good health.
Tom couldn’t wait for their honeymoon any longer and persuaded Rosemary to meet him in his room. As Tom was heading away he had a quick word with Zak saying, “If I were to go now, then I’d die a happy man, a very happy man indeed”. As he left the reception he passed his sons who looked on in disgust.
Bob and Jamie were now in the house and Bob was desperate to leave but not without his son. Jamie then showed his father matches saying that “Tom King might need warming up.” They then heard a noise and went hiding in separate rooms. Unfortunately for Bob he chooses the bathroom and that was just were Tom was heading to freshen up.
When Tom looked in the mirror and saw Bob he was in shock. Bob then took at vase from the shelf and was going to hit Tom but couldn’t do it and ran off. He came across Jamie in the hall and told him that he had a chance with Tom but couldn’t do it. Jamie called him pathetic and a joke and then just left Bob. Just as all the guests gathered outside to watch the fireworks there was a knock on Tom’s door.
The Home Farm housekeeper, Pearl Ladderbanks, was then walking through the house calling out to Tom telling him that he was missing the fireworks and but when see went quite she could hear an argument between Tom and someone else. See then noticed Kelly Windsor come out of a room behind her and walk away, to which Pearl followed, in the hope of stopping Kelly from roaming around the halls.
While Belle Dingle was singing with her family outside Tom was pushed towards a window, crashed through and fell to his death much to the horror of his guests. Straight away after Tom fell to his death we see Bob running through the halls of Home Farm with a panicked look on his face but he stops running when he hears Belle's screams. Each of Tom's sons start running towards their father's lifeless body, apparently not knowing what has happened. Grayson also makes his way to Tom and as Rosemary arrives we seeing Grayson talking to her, as if telling her what has just happened. Next we see Len look over the shoulders of a few people at Tom’s motionless body and then he just walks away with a look of, I’m glad. Jimmy goes to get some blankets and coats to cover Tom. A drunken Terry stumbles from Home Farm and he’s seen by an equally drunk Chas.
Jimmy than spots Bob climbing down a drainpipe and chases him. With the help of Matthew, Bob is caught and dragged back to the house by the brothers.
Lastly we see Jamie slowly creeping from around the house looking to make sure that nobody sees him and when he sees the coast is clear he sprints away through the woods. Tom’s best man Chief of Police Charles Vaughan, with the help of Perdy, try’s to resuscitate him while Rosemary is crying at them, "No, don't stop, please don't stop".
[edit] The Investigation
The police and ambulance were immediately called. When the paramedics arrived they pronounced Tom dead. DCI Grace Barraclough and DI Vikesh Dasari arrived and were met by their superior Charles Vaughan who asked for them to find out what happened as soon as possible. Jimmy dragged Bob in to the kitchen and kept him there until the police arrived. Bob’s reasoning for being at the wedding didn’t hold up and he was arrested under the suspicion of murder. Barraclough and Dasari, along with DS Frank Blackmore, stayed at Home Farm interviewing each of the wedding guests.
[edit] Bob and Jamie Hope
While being questioned Bob kept on saying that he was innocent but when Barraclough said that if he didn’t do it than he must be covering for someone and the expression on Bob’s face seemed that he just might be. Jamie kept on proclaiming his father’s innocence in village but some wondered how he could be so sure. When Bob was released an bail he went straight to Jamie and confronted him on his whereabouts at the time Tom was killed. Jamie got very defensive and this only made Bob even more suspicious but when he saw Jamie burn the clothes he was wearing at Home Farm his suspicions seemed to be confirmed. The next day Bob went to the Police Station and made a statement, he claimed that he killed Tom King. Barraclough was a bit sceptical but had no choice but to arrest Bob for murder. The news of Bob’s arrest spread through the village and left the Hopes devastated.
Viv went to see Bob in prison and it soon became clear to the postmistress that Bob was covering for Jamie. At the request of Bob, Viv didn’t say anything to Jamie but she couldn’t keep her silence for long and let rip to Jamie. Jamie couldn’t believe his father thought he killed Tom and went to the police station to change his statement. He told the police that he too was at Home Farm with his father but fled before anything happened. The police realised that they didn’t have enough evidence to bring Bob to court so were forced to release him, much to the anger of the King family.
[edit] Jamie started to lose it
When Jamie’s friend, Jasmine Thomas decided to become a journalist she became involved with trying to find out “Who Killed Tom King?”. In the course of her research she realised that Val Lambert had pictures from the wedding on her camera and when Jasmine was flicking through them she saw one of Jamie leaving Home Farm at a different time than he told everyone. Jamie started to become very freaked out when he learned of the picture and Jasmine losing the camera didn’t help. Jamie than received a blackmail letter wanting cash for the picture. The blackmailer turned out to be Debbie Dingle who took great joy in messing Jamie about. Jamie later told Barraclough and Dasari about the camera and when they got it from Debbie and checked it out they found out that it was useless as the internal clock was set wrong. Barraclough let a relieved Jamie know that he was off the hook, for now.
[edit] Terry Woods
Since Terry had taken a swing at Tom the morning of the murder, he too was a suspect. However he was nowhere to be found. It was revealed that he fled the country, making him look very guilty in the eyes of many of the villagers. Terry did return to the village, with son TJ in tow. The next morning, at the advice from Bob, Terry went to the police station to give his statement. It turned out that on the day of the murder Terry got a call from the Moroccan authorities that they had located TJ and the reason he was gone for so long was because it took him ages to eventually talk Jean around. The police didn’t arrest Terry but they let him know that he shouldn’t be booking any flights abroad in the future.
[edit] Len Reynolds
To get a rise out of housekeeper Pearl, Matthew said how much her partner Len Reynolds hated his dad, right in front of Barraclough and Dasari. The police decided to pay Len a visit and questioned him at his home. Len didn’t hold back in saying how much he hated Tom and even went as far as saying that he was glad he was dead. It turned out that Len didn’t have an alibi for the time of Tom’s death as he went for a walk, alone. When asked about his punch-up with Tom in the village, Len didn’t admit that it had anything to do with Edna, much to the annoyance of Pearl. The police didn’t arrested Len but when they were alone outside Barraclough admitted that he was an unlikely suspect but the fact that he didn’t have an alibi for when Tom was killed didn't rule him out entirely.
[edit] Chas and Eli Dingle
After the murder, back in the Woolpack Eli said to Chas that he took some things from Home Farm, which frustrated Chas and against her wishes he tried to sell them on. But Eli made the mistake of trying to sell them to Rodney Blackstock and it didn’t take Rodney long to realise that some of the property belonged to the King’s. Later, when Rodney saw Rosemary in the pub he wasted no time in telling her about his encounter with Eli. Rosemary when straight to Vaughan, who was in her pocket, and the Dingle homestead was searched. The police eventually found the stolen property in the pigsty and Eli was arrested for burglary. When Rosemary made a snip towards Chas about her cousin, the hot headed Dingle went for her but lucky for Rosemary, Vaughan was there and Chas was arrested for assault.
[edit] Arrest and release
The police checked through the stolen property and found a bronze horse’s head statue, which they believed was the murder weapon as forensics matched it to the impressions left on Tom’s skull. Chas and Eli were immediately arrested for the murder of Tom as both there fingerprints were on it. Under intense questioning Eli cracked and said he stole the statue, but he stole it before the murder, not after. Meanwhile, Chas’s ex-finance, Carl, couldn’t believe that Chas was a killer and when he learned that the police only found one horse’s head statue a smile came across his face. He revealed that the statue was one of a pair. Carl and the Dingles went straight to the police station where they told Barraclough and Dasari. They were surprised and were forced to let the Dingle’s go because even though the shapes were the same they couldn’t find any of Tom’s DNA on the horse’s head statue. We then saw the second horse’s head statue in someone’s attic.
[edit] Rosemary King
When Rosemary was first questioned after the murder she didn’t reveal that she planned to meet Tom to consummate their marriage. In the eyes of Barraclough and Dasari, Rosemary was a prime suspect but they weren’t allowed to question her because of interference from Vaughan. They eventually were able to question her and the grieving widow kept her composure. Matthew was adamant that his step-mother killed his father and wanted to do anything to get her banged up. He eventually managed to get information from Rosemary’s daughter in-law Perdy. She revealed that she overheard Tom asking Rosemary to meet him upstairs and the next time she saw Tom, he was dead. Matthew thought that he finally got the ammunition to nail Rosemary but Perdy refused to go to the police because she didn’t want to lose her husband. But after Rosemary’s countless interfering in her life Perdy once again talked to Matthew and told him that Rosemary’s first husband, Raymond, died in a mysterious shooting accident and Rosemary was left a fortune. This time Perdy decided to go to the police and make a statement. The next day Barraclough and Dasari arrived at Home Farm to talk to Rosemary but once again she was cool and calculated and the officers left. Rosemary believed that Perdy was talking to the police but when she confronted her about it Matthew jumped in and said he was the one who told the police after he got the information from a private detective. Rosemary was left shaken when Matthew declared that he would do anything to make sure she was out of there lives once and for all.
[edit] Jimmy, Matthew and Carl King
The King brothers were also high on the suspects list with Jimmy being the only one having an alibi. When the police arrived after the murder Jimmy’s girlfriend, Kelly Windsor said that they were together but this wasn’t true but Jimmy went along with it. The police were unsuccessful in finding the second horse’s head statue until they searched the King’s landfill where the found it and this one had Tom's DNA on it. We had already seen an unknown person through it into the landfill. Soon after the police questioned Rosemary they returned to the village and picked up each of the King boys separately. When they all arrived at the police station, each one was surprised to see the other, they were even more surprised when Barraclough revealed that there was evidence linking one, or all of them, to the murder.
[edit] Taken in for questioning
They were interviewed separately and the detectives were hoping to plant the seeds of mistrust with each of them. While Barraclough was questioning Jimmy she revealed that they matched fibres from his suit to fibres found on the murder weapon. Barraclough then went onto Matthew and started winding him up about what Jimmy was saying about him, which was false. Saying the likes of how much Jimmy hated Matthew and that Matthew had more to gain from their father’s death than the rest of them. This infuriated Matthew but then, Barraclough stunned him by saying he was free to go.
Carl was next for Barraclough and Carl revealed that he spent the last few weeks of Tom’s life hating him and that he has to live with that and rejects it. Carl was then released.
The next day each of the King boys were taking a jab at each other but when Jimmy outright said that Matthew killed their dad, a brawl ensued. Matthew pushed Jimmy in to door and his arm went right through the glass and then Jimmy took a swing at Matthew but his younger brother avoided it and Jimmy ended up giving Carl a bloody nose instead and then all three brothers started brawling.
[edit] False alibi and arrest
It would only be a matter of time before Jimmy’s false alibi, in the form of girlfriend Kelly Windsor, was revealed and this happened when Home Farm housekeeper Pearl Ladderbanks overheard Jimmy and Kelly talking about his “alibi”. Pearl knew that Kelly was with her and not Jimmy at the time of Tom’s death, so she was unsure as what to do with this information. After she made a few comments towards Kelly, the blonde vixen finally confronted Pearl and was shocked to learn that she overheard her and Jimmy’s conversation and that if they didn’t admit they lied to the police than she would. When Jimmy entered the room Pearl wasted no time in leaving. Kelly told Jimmy about Pearl and he was beside himself with worry to which Kelly questioned why he was so worried if he was innocent. Jimmy made his way to Pearl’s home and threatened her and Len’s security and even offered her money for her silence. When Jimmy left Pearl burst into tears.
The next day Jimmy and Kelly became very worried when they learned that Pearl didn’t show up for work and it wasn’t long before Barraclough and Dasari arrived in the village and hauled the pair to the station. Under intense pressure and a possibly prison spell in her future for perverting the course of justice, Kelly crumbled and admitted that she gave Jimmy a false alibi. When Jimmy saw Kelly’s signed statement saying that she lied he too admitted that it was a lie, that Kelly just said it in the heat of the moment. Jimmy became very frustrated with the questioning and was surprised when Barraclough said he could go home. Back at Home Farm Matthew and Carl learned, from a smug Rosemary, that Jimmy’s alibi was a lie and when the eldest brother arrived home his two siblings were right on his case. It wasn’t long before the police arrived at Home Farm and shocked the King boys when Barraclough arrested each one of them “on suspicion of the conspiracy to commit the murder of Tom King”.
[edit] The King’s in court
The next day the police led each of the handcuffed King’s in to the Courthouse through a swarm of journalists all snapping pictures and trying to get some comments, but to no avail.
Kelly and Chas were inside the courthouse and Chas was trying to comfort a distraught Kelly who blamed herself for what’s going on. Chas had to fight back the tears when thinking of Carl in prison as she knows he wouldn’t be tough enough. In the court room the King’s arrived in the dock with Rosemary and Grayson were looking on. The prosecution team called for the defendants to be kept in custody because they posed a flight risk and a threat to witnesses. The defence lawyers argued that their clients were innocent until proven guilty. The magistrate agreed and granted bail until their Crown Court hearing on March 27.
While leaving the court room Vaughan tried to persuade Rosemary to move out of Home Farm until the trial was over but she wouldn’t have it. When the King’s were released Chas immediately threw her arms around Carl but Jimmy wasn’t so welcoming of Kelly. When she tried to apologise Jimmy just told her to forget about it and that had bigger things on his mind, leaving Kelly devastated. Back in the Woolpack a disgruntled Jimmy spotted Pearl and when he saw her leaving he cornered her and told her to be careful because things have been known to happen to people who are murder witnesses, leaving Pearl very unnerved.
When Matthew heard Rosemary speaking to Hotten Courier journalist John NcNally over the telephone about the case and stating the “I'm extremely happy that progress has been made in the hunt for my husband's killer.” Matthew was furious and had a private meeting with his brothers outside stating that they need to stick together or else they will all be sent down.
[edit] Online
In October 2006, ITV announced plans for a fully interactive storyline, surrounding the death of Tom King. "The ensuing weeks will be full of twists and turns as some of the show’s most popular characters are placed at the centre of the enquiry, facing fierce interrogation in the hunt for the killer - the police are determined to leave no stone unturned."
In a world first, the whole storyline is fully interactive allowing viewers the opportunity of becoming super sleuths to help solve the crime via a dedicated ITV online portal. Launched in November, it consists of blogs, clues, secret e-mails and voicemails. Emmerdale Online is being created for ITV by Branded Storytelling producers Hoodlum. [2]
The viewer will be taken inside the show and have direct online interaction with the storyline. The cast will be seen trying to piece together the murder and their findings will, in turn, be immediately available for viewers to tap into online.
To add to the mystery, and for the first time ever, Emmerdale filmed 10 secret scenes, each showing a different suspect committing the murder and therefore enabling 10 different possible outcomes. As a result, even the cast and crew don’t know who the killer really is.[1]

The Death Threat sent December 25th,
You've lied. You've cheated.
You've stolen.

So I will.
[edit] The Suspects
As so many people wanted Tom King dead, the list of suspects was eventually narrowed down to a possible ten:[4]
- Jamie Hope
- Chastity Dingle
- Matthew King
- Jimmy King
- Carl King
- Len Reynolds
- Bob Hope

[edit] Secret Eleventh Ending
It was then revealed that Emmerdale had filmed a secret eleventh ending which sees three suspects from the line-up kill Tom together: his sons - Jimmy, Matthew and Carl. [5]
In this secret eleventh ending, Carl and Matthew held their father still, while eldest brother Jimmy whacked Tom over the head with the horse statuette that figures in all eleven murder scenarios.[6]
[edit] Tom's final video
Tom King's final video eventually came to light. It was intended for his close friend and best man, Chief of Police Charles Vaughan. It sees Tom speaking candidly to camera about who, of those around him, would have had the motive to kill him. The first part shows Tom discuss Bob Hope, Jamie Hope and Terry Woods. [7]
The second part of Tom King's final video shows Tom speak of Len Reynolds and how he doesn't know his three sons as well as he thought.[8]
The third, and final, part of Tom King's final video shows Tom speak of Chas Dingle, Rosemary and Grayson Sinclair and why he thinks everybody hated him so much.[9]
[edit] Controversy
The Emmerdale murder site has caused alot of controversy, due to the slowness of the ITV Servers.
Some users of the website have contacted Watchdog regarding several issues on the site, such as:
- The slowness of the servers.
- The loss of clues.
- The site failing to work
The list above, may have been a cause of so many users on the site at any one time.
[edit] Climax
Emmerdale Series Producer Kathleen Beedles has signed off the much-anticipated reveal episode in which Tom King's killer will finally be uncovered. The hour-long episode is scheduled to be screened in mid-May[10]
