Whites Only Scholarship
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Whites Only Scholarship was founded by Jason Mattera, a Roger Williams University student and member of the school Republican Party. The scholarship stunt received mainstream press coverage[1] and drew criticism from many organizations. Because of this and other actions, the Roger Williams University chapter of the College Republicans (RWUCR) were condemned by Rhode Island's Republican Party, and were no longer allowed to use a capital "R" in their name [2]. Mattera claimed that this scholarship was created as a parody to other single-race-only scholarships. Ironically, Mattera himself was hispanic and his eligibility for his own scholarship might have been questionable.
A similar scholarship was offered at BU, known as the Caucasian Achievement and Recognition Scholarship, although the CARS scholarship requires 25% caucasian heritage, and although it requires a photograph does not specify that the photograph will be used as proof of race (since partially caucasian applicants can apply).
