Whitebeard (Shirohige) (Real name Edward Newgate) (エドワード・二ューゲート, Edowādo Nyūgēto) is a fictional character in the anime and manga, One Piece. He is known as the "closest pirate to One Piece."
Some believe his name is derived from the Newgate prison in England and the Edward is from Edward Teach, the supposed name of the real Black Beard. His former subordinate, Blackbeard, has the first name of Teach, furthering the connection between the two characters.

[edit] About Whitebeard
He is the captain of the "Whitebeard Pirates". As the only man in the world who was able to match the late Pirate King, Gold Roger, in a fight, Whitebeard has been given the title of the "strongest man in the world". Whitebeard allegedly controls an enormous pirate fleet (much like Don Krieg's, only much more formidable) which is divided into numerous corps under the command of a Whitebeard subordinate. Monkey D. Luffy's brother, Portgas D. Ace, is the commander of Whitebeard's second corps. A pirate called Marco commands the first, while Joss, commands the third, and Sachi commands the fourth.
Whitebeard appears to have some health problems, possibly stemming from his advanced age or from his ferocious encounters with other great pirates during his earlier days. He is always surrounded by nurses and is hooked up to intravenous tubes. But despite this, he still drinks rum by the barrel. Even with his health issues, he is still considered the world's most dangerous and powerful pirate, which raises the question of how powerful he must have been in his prime.
Whitebeard appears to be a normal human afflicted with "giantism" (he is not to be confused with actual giants, some of whom inhabit an island called Elbaf) although this is not confirmed.
Whitebeard is one of the Yonkou, or in English, the Four Emperors of the Sea, four of the most formidable pirates that rule the second half of the Grand Line, along with Shanks and two other unknown pirates. They are considered the strongest pirates in the Grand Line. [1]
He fights with a heavy spear-type weapon called a bisento.
In a recent Japanese Fan Poll, Whitebeard is currently ranked the 43rd most popular character in One Piece.
His name in the English dub is now "Ward Newgate".
[edit] Personality and Relationships
When he first appears, he receives a letter from Red-Haired Shanks on behalf of Shanks' newest crewmate Rockstar. However, before even reading the letter, Whitebeard throws it away, claiming that if Shanks wants to talk, then he should visit in person. He even asks Rockstar to tell Shanks to prepare an expensive bottle of wine when Shanks comes to visit. When Shanks finally breaks through a blockade for their meeting, he calls him "boy", showing his feelings for the much younger captain, compared to his own age and prestige in the "New World" section of the Grand Line.
He, Shanks, and Buggy appear to know each other through his constant battles with Gold Roger's crew. While he is prepared to sit down and talk about the past, Whitebeard refuses to let others persuade him to go against his choices. He has an overconfident attitude towards others outside his crew and refuses to believe that anyone can take him down, including Blackbeard despite knowing how strong he has become.
Despite his attitude, anyone who joins his crew is instantly regarded as his 'son' and he sees himself as something of a father figure to his crew, equally they refer to him as their 'father'. For that reason what Whitebeard hates most of all is when one of his men dies because of his relationship with his crew.
When speaking with Shanks, he mentions Garp and Sengoku, and seem to have some connection to them, as he reminisces of the past.
[edit] Recent Chapters
It was revealed long ago that Shanks had some interest in Portgas D. Ace and Blackbeard. In recent chapters, both he and Shanks have broken through the barricade set for them by the World Government and come into contact, Whitebeard saying that Shanks better have brought some good drinks along with him. After a short conversation, with Whitebeard remembering how he was fighting against Gold Roger's crew and being sad that only a few that have travelled through the world are still alive, their discussion eventually comes to the topic of Ace and Blackbeard. However, things didn't go so well and their discussion broke down; they are last seen in Chapter 434 at the start of a fight. The two of them are so powerful that just a simple clash of their weapons can slice a nearby cloud in two.
[edit] Trivia
- Whitebeard, like some other characters in One Piece, has a distinct laugh he uses, his being "Gurararara..." (Gura ra ra ra ra ra!)
- Whitebeard mentions that seeing Shanks again makes the scar he got from "that bastard" ache. This could be a reference to the large scar he has on his chest, and it most likely means that it came from Gol D. Roger.
