Ageratina altissima (L.) King & H.E.Robins. |
White Snakeroot (Ageratina altissima, syn. Eupatorium rugosum), also known as White Sanicle, is a poisonous perennial herb in the family Asteraceae, native to eastern North America.
It can grow up to 1.5 meters tall, is found in woods and hedges. It contains the toxin tremetol. When the plant is consumed by cattle, and the meat or milk of that cattle is consumed by humans, the tremetol poisoning it causes is known as milk sickness (notably the cause of death of Nancy Hanks, mother of Abraham Lincoln).
