White Crow
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A slang term sometimes used to describe the white Catalina flying boats which were used to hunt submarines during World War 2. The planes were painted white as this "camouflaged" them in the sky. At the time German U-boats were dependent on surfacing to run their engines and charge their batteries. It was at this time they were at their most vulnerable, and aircraft tried to exploit this. However as a submarine was capable of diving within 45 seconds, the aircraft needed to get as close as possible before detection.
A mystical bird seen as a good omen in India. Occasionally a Crow will suffer from albinism, and thus will be born without its normal pigmentation. These birds lack pigment in their eye, which affects the eyesight crows are dependent on, so they generally do not survive long in the wild.
