White Center, Washington

White Center is an unincorporated neighborhood between Seattle and Burien and has been considered a possible target of annexation by both. White Center is regarded as an impoverished area with high crime rates. While some gentrification has recently occurred due to its proximity to Seattle, the area still faces significant issues relating to car theft, drugs, and violence. Poverty rates here are among the highest in the Seattle metropolitan area.

White Center is located at 47°30′27″N, 122°20′51″W (47.507370, -122.347385)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, White Center has a total area of 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²). 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.29% is water. Late in 2004 the city of Burien, Washington released a draft study for the annexation of all or part of White Center.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 20,975 people, 7,542 households, and 5,143 families residing in White Center. The population density was 2,388.9/km² (6,194.9/mi²). There were 7,775 housing units at an average density of 885.5/km² (2,296.3/mi²). The racial makeup of White Center is 54.96% White, 6.41% Black or African American, 2.01% Native American, 21.09% Asian, 2.60% Pacific Islander, 6.89% from other races, and 6.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.98% of the population.

There were 7,542 households out of which 35.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% were married couples living together, 16.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.8% were non-families. 23.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.29.

Its population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 101.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.0 males.

The median income for a household in White Center is $40,480, and the median income for a family was $43,038. Males had a median income of $34,937 versus $27,391 for females. The per capita income for White Center is $17,339. About 12.3% of families and 14.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.9% of those under age 18 and 6.8% of those age 65 or over.
