Whissendine
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Whissendine is a large village in the county of Rutland, north west of Oakham.
It boasts two pubs (The White Lion and The Three Horseshoes), a Church, a Methodist chapel, a Windmill and a shop and Bistro called Slipcote (after a cheese that was traditionally produced in the village). Whissendine Windmill is again producing flour and miller Nigel Moon restored the full set of sails in September, 2006.
The village also has a Sports Club which plays host to a Cricket Team, Football Pitch, Tennis Club and a Bowling Green.
Whissendine Church of England Primary School is situated in the middle of the village and has an outstanding reputation which draws pupils from outside its catchment area.
Whissendine is renowned for its community spirit and this is apparent in the Village Feast Week at the start of July. This is an opportunity for the village to come together and the highlights in particular are the Whissendine 6 Road Race and It's a Knockout.
The Village Hall is also centre for the community, hosting many events throughout the year including Antiques Fayres, the Village Pantomime, Badminton and the local Brownies
