Talk:White Pelican

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Every year the White Pelicans stop at the LSU lakes and the lakes at the Louisiana State Capitol buidling complex. They are usually here from November until March depending on the weather. This year they did not arrive until toward the end of December. This has been an unusually warm fall and I'm not sure if the hurricanes had anything to do with their late arrival. One thing that I have noticed about the White Pelicans is that they always seem to send a scout early and later the rest of the flock arrives. Also when they are visiting another lake they always leave a sentry back to guard their territory. The Lake by my building has numerous birds year around but when the White Pelicans come they take control of the lake. Normally, there are two gaggles of white domestic geese who strut the lake and seem to be the "cock of the walk" so to speak but when the white pelicans arrive, the geese seem to disappear until they leave. Another observation I have made is that there seems to be some connection between the cormorants and the pelicans. We don't see the cormorants until just before the pelicans are about to arrive. They seem to come in advance of the pelicans. A lot of this is my imagination I am sure.

[edit] White Pelican in Colorado

I just saw a beautiful single white Pelican in a small pond here in Lakewood, CO (Denver metro). It's June 3rd, 2006. Where is he going? Coming from ?
