Where There is No Doctor is a well-known "village healthcare handbook" by David Werner, Jane Maxwell, and Carol Thuman, published by the Hesperian Foundation. It is a community health care manual that has been translated into more than 75 languages and used all over the world. It is aimed at providing health information in simple language for communities without available healthcare. It covers the following areas:
- Diagnosing and treating common medical problems and diseases
- Special emphasis on prevention
- Effective examination techniques
- Home cures
- Correct usage of medicines and their precautions
- Nutrition
- Caring for children and elders
- First aid.
The book includes a special section for rural healthcare workers.
The latest published version was revised in 1992 and updated 2003.
