When the World Screamed was the last story written about Professor Challenger by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is also possibly the last professional story ever written about Challenger at all. He never developed the following Sherlock Holmes enjoyed, and has appeared very little in fan fiction.

Professor Challenger drills into the earth until he reaches the mantle, convinced that it is a sentient being and that by doing so he will be the first person to alert it to mankind's presence. He awakens the giant creature, which almost destroys him and his machine.
