Gest is a young Irish boy who in a Viking raid loses his parents, but is spared in spite of the command of Thord, the Vikings' leader, to kill him. As a man, Gest travels to Iceland to seek revenge.
Thord is a pagan, sacrificing to Odin for good fortune in battle. His wife is a Christian. Gest takes advantage of Thord's pagan code of behaviour to get his revenge.
